Very hard week at work this week, capped off by a day and half job Thursday and half of Friday in which me and my two laborers had to dig out a trench, two feet deep, and about as wide, running about seventy-five feet down a wooded embankment, in order to bury(on Friday) a ribbed, hard plastic drainpipe. The pipe was then buried, the dirt thrown back on it, tamped(packed) and top-dressed with pine straw. Encountered lots of roots, lots of rocks. The work was very arduous. It's work like this that leaves me feeling like 44 going on 85. Just when I think I don't have it in a pile I am reminded of a guy I have known since 1996, a fellow landscaper who is employed by another company. He is 38(6 years younger than myself), has a DUI on his driving record, and cannot drive right now because his license has been suspended. Despite this he continues to play the part of after-work drunkard, getting drunk on many a work night, and periodically smoking weed. He also smokes about a half pack of cigarettes a day. I have tried, so far in vain, to get "Eric" to cut back, on all of his indulgences, i.e. alcohol, and tobacco, both the household and illegal variety. His suspended drivers license means he cannot drive a truck, which in the landscaping industry translates into a smaller hourly wage. As a result he often lives with his mom, in between various internments with apartment roommates, since he cannot afford a one BR apartment of his own. I wonder, sometimes, why I even continue to stay on this guy's case about cleaning his act up... eyebrow |

That is terrible! I'd have held your coat or hat or anything else, had that guy been ignorant enough to show up and proceed with his threat. I have always had a soft-spot for the elderly, as many members of my immediate family have lived to some high ages, one great-great-Aunt lived to be 101. To verbally threatn and abuse an elderly person shows nothing but a bully attitude and I cannot believe that poor gentlement had to be humiliated like that. very angry Glad you stepped in and showed the gentleman some respect, while getting your point across to the bully. thumbs up |

Doing this shows a complete and total lack of class, not to mention that I think it is cowardly. I don't look for confrontations with people Kimi, though I will concede that there are probably a few people I have known in life(and some I have encountered on the internet) who would disagree with that. No doubt my temper has sometimes gotten the best of me, and I work on that, as I have mentioned previously. Sometimes, IMO, a situation calls for action, and believe me even as bad as this guy acted towards the elderly man, I knew I was taking a chance intervening-by that I mean mall security, which in this mall was very no-nonsense, and, as I personally witnessed on more than one occasion, quick to toss anyone out of the mall, involved in any kind of dispute, just because they are a participant in the dispute. I have a respect for elderly people, even though I have been mistreated by many, including some of the homeowners I have busted my ass for during the last eleven years in the landscaping industry. I give senior citizens a "pass" if you will, Kimi, because of their longetivity. I hope when I am old man people will feel likewise towards me. I'd like to think that as a solitary old man, I'll never make, by the way I act, people feel they have to give me a "pass". |

Oh, I totally believe that, too. I think some people, young or old go through life with a major chip on their shoulder, believing society 'owes' them something or that they have the God-given right to mistreat and abuse people, just because they feel like it. very angry I, personally, always try and give everyone a free pass, the first encounter, but I don't like being mistreated one bit and find I'm becoming less tolerant of any abuse from anyone, these days. People will always receive common courtesy and respect from me, until they prove they don't deserve either. I won't go out of my way to ever be rude to anyone, but once they're rude and disrespectful to me, I feel I owe them nothing. |

When I was still able to work, I always took the day before and after Thanksgiving off, and that would give me Wednesday through Monday off, as the plant I worked at, gave us the first day of Buck Season off as well as the first day of Doe season off. That was always a welcome break, as usually we'd been putting in some wild hours and upwards of 21 consecutive days of work, before I took some time off. My Mom and Dad have always told me that once you graduate from high school or college....the years zoom by and I really see that, now.

My father told me the same thing. This is, among the many other things he told me, absolutely true. I exchanged emails with a guy I went to high school with just over a month ago. He was a year ahead of me, graduating in 1979. It was great to hear from him. We also exchanged phone numbers, though as busy as he is(he is a medical doctor), and with a family(a wife and two adopted children) I doubt we'll ever see each other. Sometimes, Kimi, I actually have avoided email "hellos" from a few people I knew in high school, not classmates, but people I just casually knew, that were in other graduating classes at my high school. I wonder if should feel ashamed, though the truth is I don't. I have never really had any interest in high school reunions. In fact I ignored our 10th year reunion(in 1990). I think these "reunions" would depress me Kimi. Maybe I shouldn't feelthat way...but I do. Am I being a horse's ass to avoid these periodic email greetings I get from people I knew in high school? I'd like to hear your take on this. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo-->

You know, Lee, my Dad once told me that attending a class reunion isn't really worth the effort, until you hit 50 or a bit older. He said that a five year reunion is too soon, really and a 10-25-year class reunion is a lot of people trying to impress everyone with how much they make, how large their homes are, how many vehicles they own and how wonderful, smart and talented their own children are. Dad said once someone hits the age of 50 or so, they tend to relax and you can actually enjoy a friendship, again. Dad also served in the military and told me that some of his very best friendships were forged in the service, so perhaps high school years are really just a stepping-stone for life and once you're out of school, many of the people you hung with, aren't quite the people you need in your life, now. May sound harsh, but if you think about it, we were really nothing more than kids in school and as life changes, friends and relationships often do, too. My graduating class was one of the largest in our school's history...we graduated 130 that year. I was either related to several of my classmates or had gone through my entire school history with these people. Now, if they aren't family, I really have no contact with any of my classmates, with the exception of my dearest and closest friend from school days. We still E-mail, talk on the phone and see each other, occasionally. I have never attended a class reunion, myself, my cousin had me talked into attending my 15th and can you believe it...there wasn't enough interest, so they cancelled it......what kind of sign is that! ;) Congrats on the new place, Ro-Dan, sounds great, but I don't envy you the unpacking! |

DVD ordering if finally winding down. Only three to order now, for myself as a Christmas present: Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell(1968)(Region 2 PAL), Mothra(1961)(Region 2/NTSC), and Nezulla The Rat Monster(Region 1/NTSC). I'm hoping one of my two friends will get me, as a present, one of those electric shavers, the kind a man can use to shave his head. I shave my head about once a month, and I am going through an insane amount of shaving cream and disposable razors. The leaves appear to be about 60-70% down off the trees-they are coming down much faster this year, no doubt because we have been having about 1-1.5 inches of rain per week here in Atlanta for the last month. Hopefully, all of the leaves will be down by mid-December. eyebrow |

Latest phobia by yours truly, one that is seasonal, and limited to December: No Bonus Syndrome. The symptoms: nervousness, irritability, insomnia, occasional uncontrollable trembling in one's hands. The cause: fear that one will receive no bonus from one's employer. The cure: receiving one for at least $500.

I was out at a large....huge Wal*Mart in NY state, yesterday and was back in their electroncis department......just wandering through the DVDs and if it wasn't coming up on Christmas, I would have picked up for myself....Ultraman Series 1/Vol 2, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Season 2/Vol 1, James Bond: Ultimate Collection Vols 1 & 2 and a couple of Christmas DVDs, but I simply looked, but didn't touch! ;) Lee, not being a wise-ass, here, but is there a lot of nicks/cuts involved when you shave your head? Just wondering how difficult a process this is, as obviously, you can't always have a full view of what you're doing. Here's hoping you open one of those shavers for Christmas! :) Our leaves are all down, really and Thursday, we had such hard rain, we had major flash flooding happening. Let me say, those leaves can be slick as ice, when they get wet, too!

Mr Green In all the years I worked at the processing plant, the only Christmas bonus we received was a turjey for many of those years and the last year or so I was able to work, they went to a ham. I know the supervisors and upper management always received large Christmas bonuses, but never a cash bonus for us. :( I hope you open up an envelope with a very nice bit of Christmas bonus greenery, Lee. I used to use a small mirror, at first. After practice I no longer need it, or the expense of $14 at the barber shop for five minutes(or less) in the barber chair, the barber charging me $14 to cut off a small amount of hair. eyebrow If you ever feel like being a wise-ass, Kimi, feel free to do so, where my periodic gibberish is concerned.

Exactly. I would enter the barber shop, tell my barber to cut my hair on the "one and a half" setting of his shaver/clippers, he would run it over my head a few times, shave the back of my neck, and I would be done. It usually took five minutes. I paid him $14 for this, about once a month, until it dawned on me that I could do the same thing-it takes me about half an hour. Other spam: I watched the Ohio State-Michigan football game yesterday. One of the better collegiate football games I have seen in many years. thumbs up I have this coming Thursday and Friday off-I will be working on Friday, however, for a friend of mine, who has decided he wants to transplant some "otto luyken" laurels and other shrubs, around his property. I have quickly become a fan of TCM Underground "Cult Cinema". I enjoyed watching The Crazies(1973) back just before Halloween. This Friday this TCM feature, hosted by rock musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie, will be airing The Sadist(1963), starring Arch Hall, Jr. I've watched the trailer for this 1963 film at TCM's website and it looks cool. thumbs up |

An unfortunate, and I believe, outrageous trend, among many companies here in the United States. I worked for a landscape company from April, 2002 until early January, 2005, and experienced three Christmas seasons with this company before turning in my notice. In two of the Christmas "monthly" meetings, each employee(foreman and laborer) received one(1) free turkey. In the other we received a free turkey and a $35 check(bonus). In the summer 0f 2005, while working with the man who used to own this company(he sold it) on his farm, he told me that managers for his former company received $1000 bonuses every Christmas, awarded by the man who had the bought this company from him, the same man who preached year after the year, at company meetings, that the company was struggling financially and could afford no raises or bonuses for any hourly employees. Funny, he still found a way to drop sizable cash bonuses on his managers. One of the managers of this company, a younger guy than me(about 30) received a cash bonus from a homeowner, who instructed him to share the $ with the foreman and his two laborers who maintained the property week in and week out. "Matt" pocketed the entire bonus for himself and later told his crew foreman that this homeowner had left nothing(in the form of a gratuity or tip) for them. It was this type of greed, from the managers, and the new owner of this company, that ultimately made me leave-the owner had carefully staffed his departments with managers who did nothing more than suck up to him, which is why they were the recipients of bonus $ at Christmas, and the other employees who spent all their time in the field busting their asses were the recipients of his lies. At this point Kimi, I'll never trust anyone I work for, that is, a direct supervisor, ever again. I'll work and do my job, do whatever is asked of me, but I will expect nothing from a supervisor in return. thumbs down |

LaDainian Tomlinson was a one-arm army vs the Broncos in the second half of that game. He is, IMO, arguably the best running back in the NFL right now. It appears, Kimi, that the San Diego Chargers have more playmakers on offense: Tomlinson and Antonio Gates, their tight end, come to mind. QB Philip Rivers is also progessing=bad news for the other teams in the AFC West. SD gets Oakland at home this week so that's a win for the Bolts. At this point I think SD wins the division and your Broncos get into the playoffs as a wildcard. I have been an Ohio State fan for many years-one of my best friends is an Ohio State graduate, and I just started following his alma mater, about ten years ago. I am really a fan of Georgia Tech, my father's alma mater. I have been since I was a kid. I also follow my own alma mater, The Citadel(a military college in Charleston, SC), a I-AA program in the Southern Conference. They rarely make the 16 team I-AA playoffs, as other teams, powerhouse So. Conference teams like Appalachian State(Boone, NC), Furman(Greenville, SC), and Georgia Southern(Statesboro, GA), dominate. My alma mater's chief rival is VMI(Virginia Military Institute-in Lexington, VA)-thankfully, we beat them handily this year. thumbs up |

I almost wish the Broncos would revamp their entire offense and defense. Something that works for them some of the time isn't going to get them far, all the time, you know? In my heart, Plummer isn't the QB to get things done on a regular enough basis to ever see him as a threat. Obviously, the Broncos can't rely on their defense to keep them in games, as is and has been painfully obvious, the past few games. The offense needs to kick it up a notch or two and hold on that ball longer, so their defnese isn't on the field all the time. My Dad is a huge Big Ten fan, the only team in the Big Ten I really cheer for is Penn State, you'd think being from PA, I;d support more PA teams, but I'm not even a big fan of a lot of the pro sports teams in PA, with the exception of, the Penguins and the Steelers, but I'm not die-hard for either! Other than that, I'm all over the board for college football faves. Been a fan of the USC Trojans, since I was a kid. Other faves are; Colorado Buffaloes, Colorado State Rams, Air Force, Notre Dame and Hawaii Warriors. Mr Green |

Unfortunately for the Denver Broncos, more and more NFL teams, that is, the staffs, that prepare for the opposition via the use of films and videotapes of opponents, are understanding this also. Prediction: should Denver make the playoffs and win at least one playoff game, Plummer will remain the starting QB for the Broncos. If Denver makes the playoffs and makes a quick exit, or fails to make the playoffs, backup QB Jay Cutler will get to take the reins. Cutler is no doubt licking his chops at the prospect of starting, Kimi. The problem, for Jake Plummer, is that he appears to be the steak. Miscellaneous: I will be spending Turkey Day at a friend's house, doing a few hours of work, then having a meal(he's a very good cook). On Friday I will be at my best friend's house, working for a few hours. He and his wife just had a baby. Looking forward to seeing their little boy. I am certain they are going to want me to hold him. I haven't held an infant since I was in my mid-twenties.

After yet another loss, O have to wonder if by next season, we may see Plummer sitting on the sidelines and Cutler at the rein? The Broncos are in definite need of something to spark them. Normally, I'm against the flip-flopping of QBs, but Romo sure seems to be sparking the Cowboys with his play! I went to see my youngest brother and his wife on Wednesday, as they were going away for the Thanksgiving holiday and I wanted to love on my niece a bit. She is just 6 months and she was in my brother's arms when he opened the door. I chatted away to her and suddenly, she leaned towards me and put her little arms out to me.....I melted like some huge stick of butter! :D I love babies, never wanted any of my own, but I love everybody else's! My Dad was telling me before dinner, yesterday, it's been his approach to most things for several years, now. Oh, he says sometimes he will be ever-so-slightly disappointed about something, but 99.9% of the time, he won't allow himself to get too excited about anything. He lives life as it comes with both enjoyable moments and disappointments and appreciates the good times more when they happen, because of it. |

You won't have to wonder about it all, IMO, Kimi: Plummer will be warming the bench, and Jay Cutler will be the starting QB. I can appreciate your sentiment regarding babies. I have never really wanted children of my own either-unfortunately some people I know misconstrue that to mean I don't like children, and nothing could be further from the truth. Young kids are fun to be around-they often say some pretty funny things. Babies are alright, too. I always enjoy holding them...even when they poke me in the face...or drool and vomit all over my shirt.

I got another small raise at work this past Friday. A small one-it's about $10 more per week on the check, and about another $7 a week in my pocket. Nothing to celebrate but I'll take it. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo--> Well, it's just about that time to start thinking about getting a Christmas tree for my basement apartment. I always go with a Frasier fir, about 5-6' tall. These trees have a nice odor, and one this size only runs me about $20 at the place where I buy it, Home Depot. thumbs up |
