I'm leaning towards a 27" flat screen TV from Best Buy in the $300 range after tax.
Which is what I bought Friday afternoon. My company bonus was modest($200) so the TV purchase had to be as well. shifty eyes

I bought a Sharp 27" flat screen tube television which ran me about $286 including tax. This unit was on sale(it regularly retails for about $320). The below image is the model I bought.

You know, I've taken Motrin for a toothache here and there, and it works okay. I've been taking it to take the edge off an attack of gout in my big toe(and foot) this week-it works, but after taking it for more than a couple of days it will make you borderline nauseated and periodically drowsy. freak out

While doing laundry today(and a massive amount of it at that freak out ) I noticed that my landlord's laundry room, which is adjacent to her garage, is a disaster area, cluttered with all manners of junk. She had mentioned, a ways back, asking me to clean it up for her. Now I know why she asked. freak out

I'm thinking my highest total of unwatched DVDs may have gotten as high as 20....perhaps a little less. That was when Carol and I traveled to Florida, last year, to see her family. We hit several flea markets as well as some GameStop stores where I really cleaned up on adding to my James Bond collection. I watched a few while we were down there, but most of what I picked up in Florida and Georgia, came home with me, to be watched.

I hope the gout pain has eased for you, Lee. I had a horrible headache, I suffer with them 24/7, but some days are much worse than others. My Dr doesn't want to prescribe a narcotic pain med for the headaches, as he says I have enough health issues, I don't need to become addicted to pain meds, too. I tried to explain to him that pain meds rip up my stomach and really isn't anything I;d see myself abusing, but he won't budge. Anyway, when I had the severely infected tooth in September, the Dentist prescribed a combination narcotic/non-narcotic pain pill and it did seem to help ease the tooth pain. I took one a week ago, as my headache was so bad, I was climbing the walls. I must not have had enough food in my stomach, as taking the pain pill made me extremely nauseous and I actually felt worse, because I had a horrible headache and was struggling to NOT vomit. cheeky sick smiley

If I seem slightly less enthusiastic about this purchase it's because I am freak out

I thought the price of 32" flat screens would come down a little more...but they did not. I was also surprised by the lack of service in Best Buy. I was never approached by a single sales associate while I browsed their TV sections, and I looked around for about twenty minutes. eh? I was also not asked if I wanted an extended warranty for the TV I bought. I had to wait nearly ten minutes before an associate brought me a cart with which to transport the TV(about 90 lbs in weight) up to the main checkout, and they were not that busy Kimi-I went in the morning(I didn't work Friday as I was rained out at work). I've come to expect this from Circuit City, but not Best Buy. thumbs down

I have already decided on getting a larger TV next Christmas, and I'm going to set aside an amount of $ every month for this purchase. I'm locked in to either a 34" widescreen-flatscreen HD(about $1000), or a 36" stereo flatscreen(about $800). I figure I will need $800 or a little more, and putting aside about $67/mo, or about $17/wk, for a year, should do it. thumbs up

I'm sorry to hear you have been struggling with these medical issues. Keep fighting them, and never give in to them. nod

I have had gout in my right big toe since Sunday, December 17th, going on nine days now. Gout has lingered in my toes and/or feet for as long as two calendar weeks in the past, though not recently. Thankfully, it is much better today, and I think it's going away, I hope, for at least a couple of months. Early Friday(12-22) afternoon, after my trip to Best Buy, I made a quick stop at McDonalds, then headed home. I ate what I ordered at McDonalds, two ranch chicken BLT's...and then proceeded to become as sick to my stomach as I have been in at least ten years. freak out Maybe the food didn't agree with me, or maybe I contracted a stomach virus of some kind, but I was nauseated for hours, culminating in me upchucking several times about midnight, and believe me everything came back up. I felt immediately better but I still had a slightly queasy stomach all day Saturday(12-23) and ate only a couple of bowls of tomato soup. I have decided to swear off McDonalds, permanently. I have gotten ill before after eating their fare(though not to this extreme). No more McDonalds for this man.

I think I have much more time on my hands, because of not being able to work, so some days I can really watch a ton of DVDs.

Customer service is in a sad state, I can agree. I'm often amazed when I go into a place like, Circuit City or Best Buy that associates don't come over to offer any assistance or if you approach them, it's almost as if you're a bother! Quite often, I have to spell the title out that I'm looking for and offer as much info as possible, before they can even look up the item on their computer.

I was in Best Buy, last Friday and I had to return an item, I didn't get a hassle with that at all, simply exchanged that item for another, but I could see many customers weren't happy with the overall lcak of effort from associates!

I can't remember, did I say that I received a new TV for Christmas? A 27" LCD/HDTV widescreem. Mr Green I know the screen isn't as large as many people would pick, but I am absolutely thrilled with this TV!

Despite my Christmas vacation I haven't watched more than two(2) DVDs in any one day. Were I to try I might fall asleep. freak out I have been keeping a regular schedule every vacation day: I hit the rack around 11 PM every night, and I get up every day about 6:30 AM or 7 AM. I have been taking care of a few errands, handling a few things around the landlord's house while she's away at a family member's house. I still have about ten(10) titles to watch. eyebrow

Does the gout make walking and standing hard, Lee?
It makes it harder, yes. The first three years I suffered from gout, that is, from 1997-1999, I would get gout attacks about 2-3 times a year, sometimes so bad that I could not walk for 1-2 days. I had an attack like this back in the fall of 2002, but none since. I get gout "flareups" a little more often now, about 5-6 times a year, and while they are painful, the pain is not excruciating like before. I get gout mostly in my right foot or in my right big toe, though I have gotten it in my right elbow and left foot a few times. To take the edge off the pain I take Ibuprofen or Naproxen, both non-prescription anti-inflammatories. I also drink more water after an attack comes on, and I soak the affected area in a pan of hot/very warm water and epsom salts. Gout prevention medication can run, per month, and even with medical insurance, $50-60 a month, and that's the generics, not the "name" brand equivalents. Prescription painkillers for gout, like Celebrex, also used for arthritis pain, can be very expensive, and run $75 or more just for one bottle of pills. thumbs down
I try and control gout as best I can with water, OTC painkillers, and by not eating(or eating very little) red meat. Gout is a metabolic disorder Kimi. My body(my kidney's) does not remove enough uric acid, a waste product in the body, which then accumulates, and sometimes crystallizes, in the blood, and in extremities like toes/feet/knees/elbows, the crystals inflaming the surrounding soft tissue, which causes the often great pain and lingering soreness. Currently, about 2-3% of the population of the United States get gout. It is most prevalent in black and white men after the age of 36. thumbs down 2

I wouldn't charge her that much to do it. My landlord, because she is elderly, has been, IMO, ripped off many times, if her own accounts of what she has paid previous yard workers and landscapers is true. Her current "yard man" is a nice enough fellow who comes every Wednesday-he edges, he mows, then he blows off her property. He works alone, and uses, from what I saw, some very good equipment. Her yard guy charges her a little more than he should, IMO, but he is reliable, never misses servicing her property on Wednesdays, and has always done a pretty good job of picking up sticks and fallen limbs that sometimes litter Mrs. C's property after a rainfall or windy weather.
My landlord once hired a a guy to clean up her yard, many years ago. Mrs. C's housekeeper, "Maggie", told me the guy did about an hour's worth of work and then charged my landlord over $300. freak out
"Mrs. C" also got a mail solicitation from a turf management company(Trugreen) to take care of her lawn. Had my landlord signed up she would have been locked into a 12 month(or longer) agreement, with work being performed that she didn't necessarily need. I have told Mrs. C to allow me to look over any further mail solicitations that she receives regarding her yard. I actually rented a core aerator and aerated her yard back in October, then over-seeded her yard with ryegrass and added lime and fertilizer to her grass as well. I charged her, including labor and materials(and including reimbursement for the $40 rental cost of the aerator) about $100. Had my landlord paid my company, or another landscape company, to do this work, she would have paid $250, or more.

Prices for medicines is scary! Back in '97, when it was the beginning of the end of me being able to work, I went through about 6 months of not being able to keep anything down that I ate. I saw specialists and was prescribed some stomach pill that cost $130 for a one month supply! freak out The thing was, the meds didn't work, so there was some big bucks down the drain. very angry

I believe my Grandmother's husband suffers with gout. I was never really sure of what it was or what caused it, but I thought diet might be a small part of it....as far as avoiding certain food.

I hate hearing of the elderly being swindled and their good faith being abused. My Uncle retired a few years ago and in an effort to remain active and not bored out of his skull, he does the care of the cemetery across the street from where my Grandparent''s used to live. Now, the gentleman that did this before my Uncle, charged the twonship 40 hours per week, in spite of him putting in less than 20 hours per week. he didn't mow or trim or do much of anything to earn his money. He retired from that and my Uncle took over and the cemetery looks great. The town is very pleased and my Uncle does it all in 20 hours a qeek. One day, two elderly women came and were having a relative buried....a piece of equipment dug the hole, but my Uncle was to cover it, himself. He stood back until the service was over and then the two elderly women approached my Uncle and tried to hand him $500 for covering the grave! My Uncle politely explained that the price they were charged took care of all the services at the sight. They thanked him sincerely and told him, they'd been to another cemetery in NJ and the gentleman there chanrged them $500 to cover the grave! very angry

taking down the old entertainment center and hooking up the new TV.
You should find the resolution of the picture on your HD TV to be much better than standard TVs. I have read that in about five years all CRT televisions(Cathode Ray Tube), will be phased out, and there will be only Plasma, LCD, and other new technology type televisions on the market. Eventually, all local TV channels and all cable channels will be compelled, by the FCC(Federal Communications Commission), to broadcast in High Definition(HD). For owners of standard definition TVs it would require them to order a special converter box that, once attached to their TV sets, would "convert" their incoming satellite/cable signal to HD. I'm going to put away a little $ every week of this year, until I have enough saved to buy an HD TV set. I have seen 30" widescreen flatscreen HD units at Best Buy for about $580 plus tax, which = about $625. I am going to have at least $700 saved in order to snag something in HD, 30" or bigger, next Christmas. nod

Diet does play a role in gout, Kimi, but it does not cause gout, as I think many believe. It is a metabolic disorder, and, according to my doctor, inherited. As I said before, 2-3% percent of the U.S. population suffer from it, though I have no idea how many outside the U.S. get it. There is no cure for it. It is controlled primarily through a combination of diet modification and prescription medication designed to lower the levels of uric acid in a person's blood. These gout prevention medications, like most medications, come with a price: potential side effects, and from taking Allopurinol, one of the most prescribed uric acid reducers out there, I have experienced a few of them. The most common side effects: periodic nausea, upset stomach, irregularity, and periodic drowsiness. Long term use of "Allopurinol" has an even potentially more unfortunate side effect: the development of kidney stones, which is one reason why I quit taking Allopurinol after about a year.

I am content, right now, to continue fighting this insidious affliction with common sense, OTC painkillers, hot/warm water, drinking more water, and eating in a way that minimizes the number of gout attacks, and their severity. I used to eat quite a bit of red meat and fried foods(mostly fried chicken): no more. I drink more water, and eat far less fried foods. shifty eyes

Your uncle sounds like a man of great character. thumbs up I'd like to think that, were I in his position, I would have done the same thing. Exploiting elderly people, especially those with a great deal of money, is, IMO, an absolutely despicable thing to do. Unfortunately, there are a great many shysters and various con artists everywhere, always on the lookout for their next victim, someone to prey on for $. thumbs down

I have, as I mentioned, asked Mrs. C to allow me to examine any mail solicitations she receives regarding anything related to the upkeep of her yard. She has, fortunately, been receptive to this idea, as well she should: I saved her at least $150 by aerating/overseeding her yard back in October, not to mention some of the other snippets of work I do around her yard, from time to time, and at no charge. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

No, just regular cable, although, the odd thing is, when we did the auto channel search for the new TV, it actually picked up and put the digital music channels in the line-up and we can see/hear those! Mr Green Mom and Jim have digital cable, but a regular TV and they have it in just one room, the livingroom, all other TVs are hooked up to regular cable, as Mom said they couldn't afford to put all TVs on that service. I'd basically do the same thing, put the new, livingroom TV on digital cable and keep bedroom and computer room TVs on regular cable. Carol also purchased the HDMI cable for the new TV, but of course, until we get the digital cable box, we aren't using those. She told me that Circuit City or Best Buy was asking $115 for these cables! She picked up the same cable at K-Mart for less than $40. freak out

I think you hit the nail on the head, Lee....common sense! I hate pain and discomfort and feeling ill......I live with that on a daily basis, but through the various health issues I have, not of my own doing. I certainly have room for improvement in controlling certain aspects of my life, such as my diabetes, but still, common sense is needed and it's amazing the number of people that lack that!
