You know, I think the majority of people would do the same. I mean, how could anyone feel good about taking all that money? I;d be so riddled with guilt, I could never enjoy the use of it!

I think it's wonderful that Mrs C has been able to rely on you to look out for her best interest.....sounds as if she was in need of that for a while. thumbs up

the odd thing is, when we did the auto channel search for the new TV, it actually picked up and put the digital music channels in the line-up and we can see/hear those!
Too bad it didn't pick up all the channels. tongue-1

I have Comcast as my cable provider. I pay $56.45 a month for 78 channels. My favorites are ESPN, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, TCM, the Sci-Fi Channel, TNT, SPIKE TV, USA and ESPN2 and FX. I probably watch no more than these 10 on a regular, or semi-regular basis... freak out

In mid or late January of 2007 I am going to switch from Bellsouth DSL/phone service to Comcast, getting all my service on one bill. It will save me some $. thumbs up

That's true, though she does have many other people who look out for her. A Korean-American female friend of hers came by and put up her outside Christmas decorations for my landlord at no charge. She also takes them down for her. Mrs. C also has a good and reliable "handyman"-he's pricey sometimes, but he does very good work. I should know: he made major repairs to the #1 bathroom in my apartment, and outright replaced the #2 toilet with a new one, because the old one was in permanent disrepair. Her "handyman" also recently successfully trapped a raccoon that had made itself at home in Mrs. C's attic. freak out

The only real shaky area in regards to her affairs has been, IMO, the upkeep of her yard. She has a reliable "yard man", and hopefully I can take care of anything else(pruning, etc.) that his work doesn't cover. thumbs up

I think we pay close to $50/month, now, with the recent price increase. We receive about 72 channels, although to me, some of these are simply, 'fillers', nothing of any real interest and just an excuse for our cable provider to say, see how many channels you get?!

If we can afford, digital cable, we hope to get our ISP through them, too and that will combine two bills, at least. Skeet and his wife have their cable, ISP and phone service through their cable provider and they love it...three bils paid just once.

Thanks for the update, Ro-Dan, I was beginning to worry about Lee!  Sorry to hear about the computer problems, but glad it's not health problems.  :)

Unfortunately, and in all honesty, it has been both. On the morning of January 1, 2007, and without warning, my computer blinked off. When I attempted to turn it back on I got "fault" messages informing me that the hard drive "could not be found". Translation: the hard drive was damaged. I decided against repairing this machine because the estimates I got to repair it rivalled or exceeded that amount of $ that my friend Kevin offered to build me a new computer. His asking price was only $150, reasonable I think. My new machine has a comparable memory capacity to my former machine, with one major drawback: my op system is now Windows 2000, a downgrade from Windows XP on my former machine. Older Windows op systems are generally regarded as being slightly less secure, though my friend has reassured me I will have no problems in that regards.

My other problem has been what has become easily the worst attack of gout I have ever had. It's now 26 days and counting, since I first got it in my right foot back in mid-December. Despite drinking a lot of water, avoiding meat intake and basically swearing off beer altogether, my foot has improved only marginally. Gout, by the way, is a metabolic disorder, inherited, in which uric acid, a waste product derived from the amino acid "purine", accumulates, at random, in a joint(a toe, elbow, knee, or the foot-the most commonly afflicted areas), the acid crystallizing and inflaming the soft tissue, causing great pain. There are prescription medications to control chronically high uric acid levels like mine, but these medicines are very expensive. I have tried non-medicinal remedies to date: drinking much more water(it helps the kidneys remove the uric acid), eating cherries and drinking lots of cherry or cranberry juice(these juices have a compound in them that naturally controls the body's uric acid production), as well as eating no red meat and drinking no beer(the yeast in beer a "purine" rich compound). As my foot(and toe) have been slow to respond my doctor has suggested a major dietary shift for me: no more red meat at all, and only baked chicken. Fish is also out. freak out I am also to continue drinking at least two liters of water a day. I have also started taking a supplement daily that includes a lot of "red" berry extracts and vitamin C, both good at fighting gout. My doctor also made some other suggestions regarding my overall health: more sleep on weeknights, and less stress at work. As of today I can say that my foot does feel somewhat better. thumbs up

Thank you Dan, for posting a heads up about my computer situation, which is, IMO, nothing short of a disaster-a computer less than 2 years old, that I paid $400 for, and the hard drive suffers an indiscriminate breakdown...go figure. very angry

I will thank Sparkie later for getting word to you after I called him on the phone. thumbs up

Latest phobia of Packmule: nofootball-itis. This common malady afflicts those individuals enamored with all things NFL, especially watching the regular season games, playoffs, the Super Bowl, and the Pro Bowl. Symptoms include nervousness, periodic nausea, tingling in the hands, and occasional facial tics. This affliction is believed to be caused by the sudden lack of pro football on television. Possible cures: a decent NBA season or watching reruns of past Super Bowls on ESPN Classic. eyebrow

Thankfully, we don't have any channels, like that. Let's see, we do have doubles of:

2--Home Shopping Channels
2--24-Hour News Channels
2--Relgious Themed Channels
1--Channels of Nothing! No Real Picture, But They Count It!
1--Channel of Music/Announcements

In my opinion, they should limit these to one of each and replace the extra channel with Boomerang, International History Channel and BBC American, would be nice!

I appreciate the kind words Kimi. This AM(Sunday) my foot continues to get better, I believe, because of what I have doing lately to deal with the gout:

-soaking my foot in hot/warm water daily for 45 minutes

-consuming 32 oz of Pomegranite cherry juice daily

-a daily intake(one scoop) of various vitamins/red berry extract called "Ruby Reds"-it's a powdered supplement mixed with water

-a daily intake of at least 1.5 litres of water a day

I also need to start eating about one pound of cherries per week. The problem: they're out of season right now and are not being sold in grocery stores here.

My doctor stated that this dietary shift would not only help my gout but would also be beneficial to me in the long run, which I can understand. The three biggest health issues my doc addressed with me: losing about 20 lbs(already working on that), getting my overall cholesterol level down(it's not dangerously high, but it is still a little high for a man my age), exercising a little more during the week, through walking(no jogging because of my knees), and controlling my uric acid levels without a heavy intake of gout prevention medication(which long term can result in kidney stones).

Teams I have always liked and root for: Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche(Western Conference). In the Eastern Conference: New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Atlanta Thrashers. dancing admin

With all that additional liquid intake, Lee, does that keep you up at night with bathroom runs? I have had a yeast infection in my mouth and throat for several years, now....not days and as a result, I drink massive amounts of fluids a day. Some nights, it seems I'd be better off making a bed in the bathroom and other nights, I'm not bothered by frequent trips at all.

Good to hear you're taking these suggestions, seriously, and here's hoping you see positive results, much sooner than you hoped. :)

No, but I do have to relieve myself more often, and I do get up at least once in the overnight hours to answer the call of nature. In any ordinary day for me, I might "take a leak" three times a day on average-now, since I started ramping up my water and cherry/cranberry juice intake I now go 5-6 times a day. My doc says this is okay and to be expected. My kidneys don't get rid of enough uric acid from my body, so I have to "help" them along-the water does this, and the juice is a natural anti-inflammatory and also has a compound that helps keep uric acid levels in my body in check.

Well, the weather down here in Atlanta continues to be unseasonably warm. It has been in the high 60's or low 70's for about the last 10 days, and this warm weather is supposed to continue for another 2-3 days before we see colder weather come back in. The Avs are my favorite team!
The head coach of my hometown Atlanta Thrashers is Bob Hartley, who was the coach of the Stanley Cup Champion Avs team in 2001. The Avalanche won Stanley Cups in 1996(vs the Florida Panthers) and again in 2001(vs the New Jersey Devils). Though they remain a solid team, Kimi, they are not, IMO, among the top 3-4 teams in the Western Conference, nor have they been for the last few years. It would appear that this year the best teams in the West are: the Anaheim Ducks, the Nashville Predators, and the Detroit Red Wings. The Avs are, as I said, solid, with Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk. They also have some very good "role" players as well. I believe David Aebischer is still their goalie...right? confused

Just curious, Lee, when did gout enter your daily life or is this something that kind of lie dormant until a certain age is reached? I believe you mentioned this is a hereditary issue? My Mom's side of the family seems to have a ton of diabetics walking around and it was always a concern of Mom and Dad's about my youngest brother and myself having to live with the disease. My youngest brother appears clear....so far, but I was diagnosed back in '94 or '95 and it wasn't even six months later that insulin injections were necessary.

I drink so much because of my yeast infection, I bet I answer the call of nature 10-15 times in a 24-hour period. My problem isn't that my kidneys aren't functioning, but that they aren't filterning the way they should.

It's been that kind of winter, here, in PA, too. Unseasonably mild and without much ice/snow to worry about. In fact, the 'local' news channel, which is based a good hour or so from here, is still awaiting the official first inch of snow for the season! Today and tomorrow, we're supposed to be in a frigid air mass with some snow showers, but nothing major, I guess.

I'd most definitely agree, Lee. The Avs, for the past few seasons have been just good enough to hover in the playoff hunt, but not quite good enough to get past a team or two. Much like my Yankees, they need to improve in certain areas, if they want to make a real dent in the league and in the playoffs.

I started getting gout back in the spring of 1997.

"Kaijufanatic"

or is this something that kind of lie dormant until a certain age is reached?
According to medical statistics in the U.S. about 90% of of men suffering from gout began having gout attacks in their mid-thirties. I was 35 years old when I first got gout in my foot. It is prevalent in white and black men-slightly more so in black men.
"KaijuFanatic"

I believe you mentioned this is a hereditary issue?

Because, Kimi, there is no clear understanding why some people get gout is is accepted that this medical affliction, also referred to as hyperuricemia and metabolic arthritis, is inherited, presumably as a "faulty" gene of some kind.

Women can and do get gout, Kimi, though in far fewer numbers. There has been a link established, within medical research, to menopausal women and an increased risk of gout. Gout is one of the oldest medical maladies in recorded history. There are currently, Kimi, about four million chronic gout sufferers in the U.S., but doctors speculate that there are probably several million more that get gout, either infrequently or in such miminal severity that they never report it to their doctor.
