Yes and no, Lee. No help seems to be available, in fact, when I began responding to this the computer shut down, restarted and then did it, again. We've been told that there's no help for this, so all I can do is try and baby this along and hope it can last, until I can get another. So, should I disappear in mid-sentence, I may or may not be back for a bit!

I figured this might belong in the "spam" thread. Here's a picture of my place of work, Harold Bailey Landscape Contractors, Atlanta's oldest local landscape company, in business since 1952.

As is the case so often down here in Atlanta, GA the weather changed rapidly and today was fairly cold, with the temperature topping out at 48 degrees-with a blustery wind it felt a hell of lot colder than that. freak out

It's supposed to be in the low 30's/high 20's at night the rest of the week and beyond. I guess "Old Man Winter" finally showed up. cheeky sick smiley

It's been just slightly below 0 where I am, the sad part is it never snows more than a few inches, so far our highest was 2 inches and school wasn't even closed... thumbs down

Thread drift: I have a starter main page up, Corey, on the internet, called Monsterland. So far I haven't had a lot of time to work on it but it does have some links. Hopefully in about 2-3 more weeks it'll have more features. busy bee

The first thing to be solved was, the need for a new modem. We got that, two weekends ago and that helped for about 10 minutes, then the entire computer started acting all wonky and by last weekend, the computer had died. :( So, as I sit here reading through the posts, it's with a new computer that I tap out these replies. <_<

It's gotten very chilly-willy, here, but I won't complain, as I do hate hot temps and humidity. But, we're supposed to be frigidly cold here for the next several days. Not good for folks trying to heat their homes and personally, I plan on just staying in! :<!--emo&lol:-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I'm trying.

Image: a typical home we work at, on a regular basis. The owner of the home in the image is a wealthy investment banker, who lives in an affluent neighborhood not far from our shop. We completely landscaped his property-the front, sides and the back, with shrubs, small and medium sized trees, ground cover, and flowers(on either side of his front door). Our company does complete maintenance and installation landscaping, and can also handle light to medium grading jobs and general cleanup(organic). What we don't do: hardscaping, that is, the construction of walls, patios, sidewalks, ponds and other man-made creations on a site involving the use of stone and potential bonding agents like mortar, concrete, and/or cement. We also do not install irrigation and drainage systems. We employ sub-contractors for hardscaping, drainage, and irrigation work, as well as large tree removal and (tree) stump grinding.

We will be pine strawing the property in the photo as well. It will take around 150 bales of pine straw to properly straw this property(in the planting beds). To give you an idea how much pine straw me and my crew go through this time of year, after leaf "season" is over, we have 28 properties on our "route". We have already laid down over 1800 bales of pine straw...and we still have 8 more houses to do, including the one in the above photo. freak out We will probably put down around another 600-650 bales before we are done. Our company charges $7/bale installed. We will have put down over 2400 bales by the time we are through, which = $ 16,800 billed out in pine straw installation in the last six weeks, and that does not include other jobs(like tree installations) we are doing in between the strawing.

In a year's time, Kimi, factoring in weather days(rainouts) me and my two crewmen can still generate, through our work in the field, anywhere from $160,000-$170,000 in billings. shocked smiley

A whole new system. It was a package deal, we got the computer, monitor and they even tossed in a printer. I want to use our scanner/printer/copier/all inut at the moment, the driver isn't compatiable with Windows Vista, guess it will be at some point, this month, so until then, no scanning or printing.

and a lot of work!
As I mentioned, the jobs we do between pine strawing and other maintenance/enhancements can be arduous. Take this past week, for instance: between pine strawing my crew and Robert's crew(six men total) had to dig out holes for seven trees. Sounds routine enough...right? The tree "balls"(the basket-enclosed burlap) were five feet wide and 48" tall, and weighed approximately 1000 lbs each. freak out We had to dig the holes six feet wide and about 30" deep(the trees are planted a little higher than the grade around them). Couple that with the fact that the ground we were planting them in was very hard and compacted, and you have a half-day job on your hands, and for only seven trees, all of which were 15-17' tall. A "bobcat", or mini-skid steer loader, was used to transport the trees to the holes, as trees this size are absolutely impossible to maneuver on "ball" carts, regardless of the number of men on the site.

Image: a typical skid steer loader. My company's skid steer loader is manufactured by New Holland. Other skid steer loader manufacturers include Bobcat, Caterpillar(like the one pictured), and Kubota. Nearly all of these skid steer loaders have interchangeable front attachments-the one in the image is a bucket, commonly used for grading(moving soil/dirt around). One other common attachment is an elongated metal bar and hook, used to attach the nylon straps enclosing tree burlap baskets, in order to move them around on a job site.

One of the Yahoo groups I am a member of is one for alumni of my old high school, North Fulton. North Fulton High School was a public high school, and was a sports powerhouse in football and basketball during the 1950's and early 1960's. It developed a reputation for being among the top high schools in academia in the city of Atlanta. Desegregation and (forced) busing changed the "landscape", if you will, of many public high schools in Atlanta during the late 1960's and early 1970's. At one time NF was a 100% white enrollment. By the early 1970's enrollment at North Fulton had become about 45% black, 45% white, and 10% Asian/Hispanic. I attended North Fulton High School from August of 1976 until early June 1980. My memories of this fine high school are among some the best I have in my entire life. To be honest I played many sports, was very active in extracurricular activities, held a PT job after school and on weekends and was so busy that I never had the time to develop close friendships with classmates...like I should have. Still, I got along with everyone, and was very fond of my classmates, and teachers, many of whom spent a great deal of their personal time helping students(like myself) with our assignments, counsel us in regards to decisions about college, or just offer us students helpful advice about life in general. During the 1950's and 1960's enrollment at North Fulton high school was well over 1000 students, and hovered around 1500 students during the late 1950's, which was the maximum capacity for this school. By 1980, the year of my graduation from this institution, enrollment had dropped to about 500, or slightly less. My graduating class was just over 100 students. In the mid 1980's North Fulton high school closed and was reopened later as the Atlanta International School, a "magnate" school for students who live here and many foreign nationals and those visiting here from abroad. AIS remains open today.

To North Fulton: thanks for the memories. I will always cherish those I knew from this former great public high school. thumbs up

Sorry about being so late to the party, everyone. This has been a relatively light year for snowfall here in Michigan. There's only about an inch of the white stuff on the ground where I live in Royal Oak (Detroit Metropolitan Area). Still, when the white stuff does come down I enjoy it. I love watching the big puffy flakes as they fall to the ground.

When I was a kid I did.  I used to play in the snow all the time.

There have been, as well as I can recall, two major snowstorms in Atlanta, GA: in the late 1970's(either 1978 or 1979) and the more famous one we had in 1993. God almighty I was flabbergasted by that one. freak out It was in March of 1993 that Atlanta had a major snowstorm that dumped anywhere from 6-10 inches of snow around the metropolitan Atlanta area. I lived in Roswell, GA(a suburb about 12 miles north of downtown Atlanta) at the time, in an apartment complex, and worked at a nearby mall as a retail(shoe) store manager. The mall was closed for two days, and I could not get out of my apartment complex for a day and a half, because of the snow and ice. Our apartment manager hired a private company to clear the apartment complex roadways so tenants could exit and enter the complex. We got another 1-2 inches of snow about a week later. Meteorologists declared that this kind of snowstorm was something that happens in Atlanta about once a century. shocked smiley

Me and a couple of friends built several, and all sorry-looking I might add, "snow men". We dressed up one of the snow men to resemble Jake and Elwood from the Blues Brothers(1980) movie, replete with shades, dark jacket, white shirt, black tie and hat. The other one we made had the snow man chomping on a huge Cuban cigar.

Let me see if I can guess some of the things you do inside the house on a "snow" day off from school:

1. feed your crayfish
2. play video games
3. help your mom out around the house with chores
4. play with your dog a bit
5. clean your room

I am right or wrong? ... tongue-1

We're getting hit with a snowstorm here in Michigan. The roads are terrible. It's not supposed to stop until the morning. I expect most of the schools to be closed tomorrow.

Poor Jenny...here car broke down and I had to come pick her up. Her car is in the shop and she'll have to miss work tomorrow. At least she's home safe and sound.
