| Welcome to MONSTERLAND FORUMS! We are a casual and friendly online community of movie fans who like to talk about giant monsters, horror and sci-fi in cinema, on television and on Blu Ray/DVD. There are forums for sports, casual chat and video games as well. For those of you who like making art, writing stories and creating videos, our community includes a forum for these submissions as well. Check out our main index page and other board forums! Anyone is welcome to join our community! MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports. MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here. For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju). -Lee "Packmule" Merritt site founder |

If Keith Aiken believes your writing has improved then I would take his comment to be spot on given his background in arts and journalism. ![]() I also believe your writing has improved but I also think more improvement is needed. It's a process. As long as you're moving forward in that process you'll be okay. In all the years I've looked over your writing I've noticed a tendency by you to include the word "of" a lot, an obviously short word implying possession. Your writing should include more adverbs and fewer participles. By participles I mean words ending in "-ing". A lot of your writing includes too many "passive" participles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participle More verbs and adverbs and fewer passive participles. Start with this. |

I have read the wikipedia page. I have also gone to this link: http://www.be-a-better-writer.com/participles.html I feel that this is defiently a stylistic choice, though I do see how overuse of that structure (regardless of it being intentional) could be a distraction. And just now, I had to stop myself from saying, "though I do see how the overusing of the structure"... IDK if that is part of the lesson I am having to learn. |

There may be a "stylistic" element involved here, Evan...but there's nothing stylistic about spelling errors. Example: "defiently", which SHOULD BE spelled definitely Regardless of how you adjust your writing style, if your spelling doesn't improve then these spelling errors WILL adversely affect how your work is received. I had college English professors who had a policy of assigning a grade of "F" to any paper turned in with a SINGLE spelling error. They just wouldn't tolerate it. Most four year colleges require you to take some English courses(regardless of major) and if your work you turn is full of spelling errors you can bet you'll get some failing grades on them.

"Weather" = meteorological conditions You should have used the word Whether to begin your first sentence. ![]() "though I do see how the overusing of the structure" SHOULD read as follows: though I see how the overuse of the structure It's not necessary to use the word 'do' in front of the word see and "overusing" is a participle - remember what I said about eliminating the use of words ending in "-ing"

I feel much more confident about my situation than I did at the time of my last post. We just finished the last job, and the fact that it's done makes me feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest. Having to have the entire house painted twice (I didn't paint any walls; my job was base-boards and doors, which look great if I do say so myself) due to mis-communications and crappy work is more than just a headache. But I guess when you contract out, you get what you paid for. But I'm still running on back-up (my parents) funds right now, which is a very uncomfortable and depressing situation. I am now going to have to ask for car insurance, prescription, and grocery money for a few weeks to be able to hold out until the end of the month, which seems like a long way off, even though it's only about ten days. I have to go to court to take care of a traffic ticket. He promises he'll take me on the way to the next job, which he has been doing for two months. If he stands me up again, I really feel like I might hit him with my hammer. Hard. But it's the weekend, and right now I don't care about anything else in the world except my own personal enjoyment, and I feel awesome. |

It is February in North Carolina. Well, I guess it's February everywhere right now. Anyway, the highest temperature of this week was about sixty degrees yesterday. Today it hasn't gotten over thirty-eight. At 3 pm, it began sleeting, and since 4, it has been snowing. Why can't we have a little consistency here?

Up until about two weeks ago temps here in Atlanta, GA were uncharacteristically mild even by the standards of our usually mild winters. Two years ago(the winter of 2010) it was brutally cold with extended periods of bitter cold temps(lows in the teens and highs in the mid or high thirties), these cold temps often lasting for ten days to two weeks at a time. It has been generally colder here the past couple of weeks but still nothing extreme and no frozen precipitation of any kind. The winter of 2012 has been mild here because of the "La Nina" wind actions over parts of the Pacific Ocean. The last update I read about long range weather forecasts for the southeastern U.S. projected a mild January and February. This "La Nina" pattern stops at the end of February and the chances of much colder weather go up for March in the southeast. Back in 1993 there was a historic snowfall here in Atlanta, GA: six inches of snow fell and there was another two inches that fell the next day. Blizzard conditions existed for nearly twenty four hours in the city. It was a snow event we see here in Atlanta about once every hundred years. I've seen many very cold and nasty March months in Atlanta and it wouldn't surprise me at all if this year's March was a very cold month. |

I would like to apologize to everybody if some of my posts lately haven't been making sense. Most of the time, when I click on a topic, it automatically sends me to the latest post. I noticed, today actually, that sometimes I don't; it sends me to the next to last page. It's not an annoyance, but it was kind of funny to discover. All I could think was "wow; I wonder how many times I've screwed up because of this." So if my posts sound funny and don't match up to the discussion at hand I'm sorry; I'll be sure to check the page number from now on. |

Last week I decided to get back in shape again, three years ago when I reached my highest weight (over 300) I decided to get in shape so with hard work and patience I lost 80lbs give or take. After losing my job in 2010 and being stressed from not being able to find a substantial job until late 2011 I gained 55lbs back and I was not happy about it. Well finally I've decided to get back in shape and joined a Planet Fitness gym that just opend up here. I started going there last week and in my first week I lost 9lbs. This is the most weight I've ever lost in a week; I primarily focused on weight training as opposed to cardio because I do get A LOT of cardio at my work due to running all over it trying to help customers and taking care of returns. I've already started to see some results, my chest is flatter and is looking more like pecs rather than "man boobs" and my arms have gained some new muscle mass as well, pallets that used to be heavy to me feel lighter as well as boxes that used to be heavy. Tonight I worked out for a good 60 minutes on the treadmill and feel great. Thursday when I go I'm going to focus on weight training. My goal is to get down to 210-215 so I've got 60-55 pounds to go. |

While I think it's great that you're working out again, Tom I'd like to submit, respectfully as always that neither you nor anyone for that matter needs a gym to get into shape. I have absolutely nothing against gyms and other workout facilities but being more budget conscious in the last decade it dawned on me that the expense of a gym membership was something I could do without and get into shape. Some things I've done on and off that I guarantee will whip your behind(and other body parts) into better shape: -"power" walking, that is walking at a quickened or even rapid pace and really exaggerating your arm swings. Walking up hills will really burn calories -push ups-if you haven't done them before at all or not very much start slowly, keeping your back straight and going all the way down and up. Widen out the position of your hands to really work your chest. Push ups increase tone, upper body strength and can also help tighten up the chest and stomach areas -an inexpensive eliptical or treadmill in the home, especially those with adjustable settings. Even a stationary bike is effective. -simple dumbbells for those who, like me, no longer are enamored with free weights Additional note on walking: hand weights are optional. I've never recommended ankle weights. Some time ago I used to walk with a 10 lb bag of sand in an old backpack that was strapped onto me |

Lee I agree about the gym but for $20 a month with guest privledges (I can bring a guest), half off at the juice bar, unlimited tanning (not really going to use this except to get a base tan for Florida) I really couldn't pass the offer up. Another thing I forgot to mention I have been watching what I eat, I'm trying to eat more protein and a little less carbs though not cut them out completely. |

I'm going to complain some more, partly because my sinus headache is starting to go from the right side of sinuses to the left side and compaining helps relieve frustration. I am juggling many things. An analysis over the use of pop culture references in Tarantino's work (something all critics who dislike him hold against him), a work which might set up a real dichotomy for which genre different films within the Godzilla series should go (and weather or not something like "childrens films" should be considered a "genre", rather something else entirely, like keeping such classification as an intended audience range and nothing more), and also, my most laborious project, a book on Gamera 3. I like reviewing my past works. In case of GAMERA 3 (which I wrote a loosely organized piece for G-FAN), I have made the judgement that in the two years since I have written it, my views and knowledge have changed. Not just on the film, but in film itself. As of right now, without further research to be done, I could write something in the ball park of 30-40 pages, half film critisism, half production record. There are little problems I am facing, such as things I do not quite comprehend because of cultural differences, moi lacking knowledge of things, and not having access to certain texts that could help me. The main problem though is that I have come to the consensus that no subtitle print of GAMERA 3 is accurate. With the possible exception of the subtitle transcript which was used for GAMERA THE BOX: 1995-1999 (R2), the subtitle transcripts are errorful to the point I do not feel comfortable doing any more with the film. I own three different transcripts of that -ADV, Mill Creek, and one done by a popular bootlegger (hint: the acronym for their "company" is similar to a certain STD). I just can't do anything with it. Maybe on a bucket list, I'll put down that I'd like to produce a release of GAMERA 3 in which I hire a couple of people (Norman England notably) and make a subtitle transcript. Though with the transcript, along with it being accurate, there would be times in which subtitles do not show up because it's audience should already know certain things (when a character says one word sentences like "Tokyo" or "Gamera" or "Arigato"). Eh. And now for some jibberish: The Dark Knight of the Living Evil Dead 2: Electric Boogaloo |
