For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. ^That's great news! Not exactly a clear victory since he didn't give you all of what he owed, but like you said, it's probably best to leave it that. Best you can do is warn any newbies.
Thanks! Pretty much the entire issue of not getting what I owed is at least partially my fault; I should have wrote down what he said he'd pay me at the start of each job, then made sure he followed up at the close; kind of like a bill of sorts. I might have seen more of it had I thought to do that. But what the heck; that'll give me a few things I need and want, so I'm partially happy.

And about warning newbies: I haven't come across anyone who wanted to work for him (he's pretty much burned all his bridges in this neighborhood), but I have warned a person or two about hiring him. And I will continue to do so; I'm happy that he finally paid me, but that doesn't really change my opinion of him.

And good luck with the new job. Everybody makes mistakes, so nobody's alone in that department.

I have been busy lately consulting with an academic adviser to plan out my AS of Life/Natural Science degree. I switched from a AS in Biology degree to Life/Natural Science degree. I switched because I refuse to take 4 chemistry classes. These classes will be absolutely pointless! So I figured that I would load my Life/Natural Science degree with lots of Biology classes. 19 of my credits will be Biology thumbz up . I may go back and add onto my degree, but for now I will stay out of chemistry.

I have also considered to get a AS degree in History when I'm done with my Life/Natural Science degree. All I would have to do is to take 6 classes, since my others will count. That's only one extra semester to obtain another degree.

So, here let me gripe about when things in my life take a turn for the worse and it leads to me having to be the force of action in my family. As of right now, my mother is out of comission due to her (after I told her not to until the weekend or something) deciding to do a bunch of heavy lifting that she couldn't do. The effects of such, mixed with her prescription musle relaxer leads to her being ill-coordinated, not too fluent in speech, and display some truly bad driving skills.

That is what I have to work with for today's objective- try to overdraw the bank account by $320 (not including OD fee). Mom tried to to do this yesturday, and she found out she had to re-authorize the account for over drawings (evidently something she has to do every 6 months). It took 24 hours, which means we should get the money today. My mother tried to go to the bank a second time yesturday, but I hid the keys because, qute plainly, something that takes 24 hours takes 24 hours. She doesn't need to be wasting gas.

So, today, I have to get the cash either by walking to the bank or helping my mom drive there. The most dangerous thing about such an act is that when she is like this, she takes wide turns, which has almost caused accidents before. She has also misred street lights and forgotten to turn on turn signals.

This is a peak into my life. This, miraculously, isn't the worse of days I have had to deal with.

Got a big break (in a manner of speaking) in terms of work the other day; a neighbor called me over to look at his planter area, which is overrun by those annoying tall red things (not sure what they're called, but they have berries on them and break easily). They break off quite easily, but the roots are very large and sometimes go very deep. Plus, there are several saplings that he wants rid of.

Also, he has a rather large amount of wood that he wants rid of; the remnants of a cut-down tree a few years ago. All in all I figure three or four days' work, and he agreed to pay me eight dollars per hour.

So we went to the bank earlier, against my wishes, and guess what? LIke I said to her, we still had two more hours to wait. Uh.

But no, the worse is whe she wanted to make herself some corn dogs. I come down to work on a school project (which I get to use filmmaking abilities for) and I just see her sitting. I don't suspect anything. I ask her what is she doing, as she looked as if she just stared into space. She was listening for squirrels. That's not crazy, that's real. We have squirrels in our walls.

But she mentioned that she was making corn dogs. She could have been down there for 20 minutes, the oven wasn't on. The timer wasn't even on. I point this out to her.

I do the oven stuff and go upstairs. 20 minutes later I come down and the oven buzzer was going, signaling that the dogs were done. If I didn't come down sooner, she would have picked up the cooking pan the dogs were on without an oven mitt and without turning off the timer or the oven itself. I tried walking her through it, but it was of no avail. Atleast I got her to turn off the machienary. But I put the dogs on a plate and put on the condoments. All of a sudden she starts knocking down dishes. My anger breaks and I yell something along the lines of "what are you doing?" I have her take her corn dogs and get out of the kitchen before she breaks anything and she calls me a pain in the ass. I say yes she is. She says I haven't done anything to you.

Yes. Yes you have. It might not even be your fault, but your actions have done a lot.

She also asked what would happen if she went insane, and I say, "I don't know, I'll figure something out." God, I would hate to find out what happens when i am at school and she is having one of her episodes.

...and he agreed to pay me eight dollars per hour
Nono

Respectfully, I am quite sure you can negotiate a better hourly rate for yourself than that. When I work on the side I charge $12/hour and for enormous cleanups which I know will be especially tough on me I charge anywhere from $14-$15/hour.

I've had numerous people over the past decade call me(referred to me by someone else I've worked for that they know) and they have tried to get me to work for them for $9 or $10 an hour. I politely decline. A few have gotten testy about it and said they can easily find a Hispanic worker who'll do the work for that rate. I reply with "then that's the way for you to go" and "good luck". Most of these people call me back a week(or two) later and say they will pay me my hourly rate...which I believe is fair and reasonable, given my seventeen years of landscaping/gardening experience.

Obviously McCoy you have a right to work for any hourly rate you want but don't sell yourself short. In this lousy economy it's always tempting to take any extra work that comes our way but, for me anyway, I am going to make sure I get paid a fair rate for it. Most experienced landscape crew foreman in Atlanta, GA earn anywhere from $11/hour up to $15/hour depending on which company they work for. I believe $12/hour is a fair "average" rate that takes into account that hourly pay range. winky

Have you contacted a pest control company about these critters in your walls? A pest control company could also likely figure out how the squirrels are getting into your house to begin with, something I would think you would want to rectify.

If $ is an issue in hiring a pest control company, Evan then I would at least, and on your own, try to find out how these squirrels are getting into your house. If you can do that then you can then try to figure out how to close any potential entry points into your house. winky

I swear my body is trying to kill me . . . My knees have been giving out on me all day. AT THE WORST TIMES! The first was this morning when I got outta bed and my right knee gave out, causing me to fall. The second time was when I was walking across a street and my left knee gave out on me. Third, I was walking up a flight of steps and both of my knees gave out on me at the same time.

I'm 19 and my body is a complete wreck. The things that are wrong with my body are, 2 crappy knees, a "locking" elbow, a bad back (from back scoliosis, It isnt very noticeable, its so minor that it hurts more than a "full" effect ), 2 completely flat feet, along with a "locking" shoulder blade.

deadzone

I'd hate to see what my body is like when I 50 or 60. Nono

I fully understand where you're coming from, and given my current employment situation I probably should have taken that action three years ago when I first lost my job.

However, all of my work takes place within my own neighborhood, and I've been doing it at relatively the same price for almost, if not, ten years. It started as my first job (back when money wasn't a huge issue deadzone ), and when I got a full-time job it became just side-work. What I was charging was perfect for side-work, because I had another source of income. So now it's become a moral issue, if you will; I want to keep giving the people in my neighborhood the same inexpensive services so I can keep myself working.

The flip-side of this: If my employment situation doesn't change before next season, I'm going to advertise in my community newsletter again, and hopefully I can pick up a few extra yards. When that happens, I will definitely raise my prices to something I can really work with. It is now too late in the season to really advertise anything besides leaf detail, and I usually wait until a few weeks in to start that. Plus, I can't get rid of them; I have to mulch them into nothing, and I'm not happy with that. I have a machine, but the motor is blown and needs to be replaced (it was given to me by my uncle who hadn't used it in years). So starting next year things are going to change, regardless. For my existing customers, I'll be charging at least ten extra dollars per yard, then for each new customer it'll be at least twenty over what I would normally charge (I don't charge by the hour, but by the job).

@ The Real McCoy: my suggestion would be to stay at your $8/hour hourly rate through the end of this year and, if you're not working full time at the beginning of next year, try to work for your regular customers at $9/hour. Good luck. winky

I would love to work for hourly pay, but it's not economical for me. It usually takes me between forty-five minutes to an hour to do the yards I do. That's only about thirty dollars a week. If I pick up three or four more next year, it won't be much more than that.

Now, if I get into a bunch of extra stuff, then that would be a good idea, but until I make a commitment to make this a real business (whether it be a side business or a full-time job) I think it's best just to keep it a commission-based pay schedule.
