For those of you who like making art, writing stories and creating videos, our community includes a forum for these submissions as well. Check out our main index page and other board forums! Anyone is welcome to join our community!

MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports.

MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here.

For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

As Thanksgiving approaches I thought I take a moment to touch on those things I am thankful for in life. I'm fifty years of age now, no longer a young man but not yet an old geezer. It's a time of transition and, let me tell you, I hate it. I hate getting older and all the accompanying things that come with it. Still, I try to remember the things I do have in life: those moments of positive reflection become fewer every year as I get older. I hope, as I age, that they remain a part of me in mind and heart.

What I am thankful for:

1. I'm thankful for President Barack Obama, who I consider the worst U.S. president in the history of our country. He once said "you didn't build that!", a reference to business owners who Obama believes can't build a business of any kind without government assistance and infrastructure. The prez did me a favor making this asinine comment: it helps motivate me to get out and work on various weekends propagating my gardening venture. My business is small and may remain that way but I built it...and without any help from our president, a career bureaucrat and paper pusher, and without any help from the government. Thank you, President Obama for motivating me every day to get out and prove you WRONG about hard working, entrepreneurial, self reliant Americans who actually prefer to earn their money through hard work as opposed to making it on government entitlement programs while sitting on their collective asses and ignoring any opportunities to get employment. winky

2. I'm thankful for my cat, "The Hammer". Like me he's getting older and slower but still possesses an independent streak and, thankfully, his habit of using the litter box to answer the call of nature and not my living room floor.

3. I'm thankful for the friendship of three good men, two who live here in Atlanta, GA and one who lives in Dover, Delaware.

4. I'm thankful for technology like high definition TVs and Blu Ray discs, which allow me to watch cable and movies without having to put on my bifocals.

5. I'm thankful for the kindness and friendship of my elderly landlord, a woman who I consider to be my grandmother now.

6. I'm thankful for the active member community of this message board, Monsterland Forums. I started up this message board back on January 29, 2006 on an old, piece of crap laptop computer and it's safe to say I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Still, I kept at it and we have what I consider a group of smart, high character individuals who regularly participate in the forums here. These members have continued to participate despite my declined activity in updating many of the topics and for that I am and always will be grateful. Rest assured that everything I do here I do for the members. Always. Mr. Smiles

7. I'm thankful for Aleve and Ibuprofen, both of which help ease the pain of arthritis in my knees and feet.

8. I'm thankful for Allopurinol, a low cost prescription med that lowers my uric acid levels in my blood, preventing attacks of gout in my feet or toes.

9. I'm thankful that I can still perform my work at a reasonably competent level given my age and the wear and tear on my body.

10. I'm thankful for tea and coffee which help get me going in the morning.

11. I'm thankful for wheat grass powder, which affords me the means by which to get the benefits of eating green vegetables daily without actually having to eat them, many of which I absolutely despise including cooked spinach, turnip greens and green peas. I've found wheat grass powder also helps keep me regular, of special importance since I work outside and don't relish having to seek the privacy of dense brush or a wooded area with which to answer a sudden call of nature. loco2

12. I'm thankful for Deer Park water, my preferred bottled water which tastes like heaven on a hot day.

13. I'm thankful for Facebook, for affords me the opportunity to stay in touch with college classmates.

I have guilt going through my mind and heart.

Let me tell you guys another sob story as to maybe find some guidance from the older, more-experienced-at-life members of this board.

Well, an interesting thing is happening today. My mother is going to be evaluated by a doctor to see if she is eligible for disability. This is great. Sure, some will say that my mother is one of those people that Bill O'Reily calls part of the taker generation who feel entitled to stuff, I know fully well that at 50 - with the problems that have accumilated as they have due to not having the money to fix said problems - she is a poster child for such. Me getting it would be an outrageous travesty.

But now, for something this important, I have to assert myself. I don't like asserting myself in things that effect people other than myself for either A. I am doing something for the first time and I probably do not know what I am doing or B. I do not want to have blame placed on me. It is easy for me to admit that I am wrong, but on certain levels of situations, I'd rather not have that kind of scorn on me. But I have to assert myself. Such as making sure that my mother is alright to drive and is functional by the time we have to leave. I cannot risk her dozing off or passing out or loosing her sense of time (there have been instances where she'd come up and ask if it was 3 in the morning when the sun is still shinning).

Me asserting myself into this kind of guardian position means missing one more day of school.

I will not go into too much detail about my school affairs, except a couple of things: when I finally decided to get serious about wanting to me a filmmaker, I really took the bull by the horns. I asked the photography teacher to accept me into the second part of the photography 1 class (which is totally unorthodox), and I made it. I made it. My argument of the need to develop a photographic eye like the filmmakers pre-Sergio Leone was one which made him say that I knew more than most of his students knew (to explain, you can split the development of the art of film into two halves - pre-Leone and post-Leone. Before Leone, the likes of Kubrick and Kurosawa based their skill on what they knew of the still image. Photography and painting were these. It was only in the late 60's/early 70's that filmmakers which were well versed in the youngest art form on earth and went to school and were fans of film came into prominence). Photography or painting, I had to choose. I chose photography for the teacher being one of the nicest (a total juxtaposition) and I had my own camera.

In doing so, I finally started to value the teacher/student relationship. I want to make this man proud (an easier task than pleasing myself). Not only has he now considered me "a friend", allowed me to use him as a job reference, and has had the patience working with me to get someone from the Savannah College of Art and Design to come to my high school (something they have never done), but he also likes my photography. And I don't do much. And I can't do much. Except for manipulating the exposure and choosing weather colors on the video or photo setting are better, I have to depend on idea for shots just coming into my mind and hope I can pull things off like lighting via little things like candles or a flash light with a colored piece of plastic in front of it.

Me being absent like this is a bad thing. He knows a good bit, but it still doesn't change the emotion. I look like a bum. I look like someone who doesn't care. Sure, for the first time in my life, I feel pleased and happy to stay after school just to finish work he assigns me where as with other teachers I don't (and usually finish it some other time before the deadline). For the first time, I feel that an 85 isn't good enough for me. I need to not only pass, but pass "with flying colors".

And I can't help but feel that I might be letting him down. This is so bad that last night, I had a dream of doing something in his class and making him proud that one of his students is doing this and that... but I wake up and feel a sense of dire dread and fear.

Family is more important. People say you have your own life to live, but I have always believed in the sacrificial aspects of life. But, these conflicting feelings... these conflicting feelings.

I hope this process has a conclusion that is beneficial to your mother. winky

It doesn't matter what anyone says, Evan(even Bill O' Reilly tongue-2 ). Every situation has to be assessed individually. That's what those involved in the process(doctors, etc) are paid to do. Be mindful of the process as it pertains to your mother and don't dwell on what anyone else may say about it.

heyo

If you mean disability payments then, and assuming you're an able bodied person who can physically work for a living, yes you receiving disability benefits would be wrong.

You may dislike being assertive...but if being assertive keeps your mother from falling asleep at the wheel of the car while driving or prevents any other situation which might jeopardize her health and safety, then you should absolutely be assertive. You are her son, Evan and an immediate family member. If you aren't "assertive" in your efforts to help take care of her, then who would be?

G2KMaster

If a teacher has committed to spending extra time(and effort) in helping you develop an interest or skill of yours and you're concerned that your family obligations may conflict somehow, say time wise, then let this teacher(or any teacher) know about your situation at home regarding your mother. You don't have to get into a lot of detail: just let them know your mother is dealing with some health issues and that you are actively helping her with them and that this may cause sudden and sometimes unexpected interruptions or cancellations in your schedule in regards to any scheduled time with this teacher either during or after school. I'm sure this teacher would be understanding and willing to work with you. winky

Family is more important. People say you have your own life to live
For most people, Evan it's a matter of doing both, sort of a balancing act. You do have to live your own life but sacrifices sometimes have to be made. I've always been willing to make that kind of sacrifice and in fact I believe the majority of people are provided it's for a good reason. Taking care of your mother is absolutely a good reason. Don't let anyone tell you different.

You've got a lot on your plate right now. I want you to look into speaking with a counselor(a pyschologist or therapist). I think talking with someone like that might help you better deal with your situation right now. If you cannot find a counselor inquire as to whether you could talk with a minister from one of the local protestant churches in your area. That's a start.

Damn... a psychiatrist.
Psychiatrists are typically expensive. Many years ago I went to counseling at the GAPC, Georgia Association Of Pastoral Counselors. They are comprised of active and retired protestant clergymen, many of who have experience in grief counseling, marriage counseling and general counseling. I went twice, back in 1992-1993 and then again in 1996. I wanted some help in dealing with my temper. Was it successful for me? Somewhat. At the time I decided to end my counseling because I no longer wanted to spend the money: it cost me about $30 a week. GAPC charged based on a 'sliding scale" which factored in a client's income from their job.

GAPC would likely not be free though it would be low cost, assuming there is a chapter of this organization in your area, Evan. I still think your best bet is to talk with a school counselor, let them know you would like to talk with someone who has a counseling background(not related to your school) and see if they can refer you to anybody. If you have a friend at school who is an active member of their protestant church you might ask them if they can put you in touch with the minister or assistant pastor of their church. This will require some effort on your part. I think it would be worthwhile thing to do. winky

The GAPC is now called Care And Counseling Centers For Georgia. Their website with contact info: http://cccgeorgia.org/

You can call them and ask them if they can recommend anyone in your area.

Here's one with two locations, Macon and Warner Robins, GA: http://www.fcccg.org/

Hmmmm, recently I've been looking around for someone who has got the Toys Dream Project Godzilla 1955 figure (Here's a video for those of you who are wondering what it looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X0m2tvNB58 ) and can't find one for a decent price with a fast overseas postage service, since I want to get it quickly because once things get close to Christmas it will take a very long time to get here, so I'm wonder if any of you guys know someone who is selling the figure and will post it using a fast overseas postage service?. topper
