Or, unfortunately, a potential access point into the basement for outdoor critters like birds, opossums, and raccoons.

That's true, thankfully, when Mom and Jim lived in their old house, they never experienced anything coming through the chimmney or fireplace that wasn't supposed to be in the house. Their fireplace was gigantic, the house had originall been used as an inn back in the late 1700/early 1800 and the fireplace was massive. So large, in fact, they couldn't get a screen to fit it, so they decided to go with a gas insert, a few years following their purchase of the home. It actually looked very real, when they lit it and the fireplace did warm the livingroom, nicely.

The last apartment I lived in, before this current one, did have a small fireplace and I loved decorating it at Christmas, but it was never used.

Well, the heat is on down here in Atlanta...literally. It's been 90 degrees or warmer for the better part of the past week and in the low 90's this weekend. Yesterday I spent most of the day using hand shears to trim the shrubbery(many of them large shrubs) along the front of the house across the street from where I live, which is home to my boss' mother in law. I had to wear a bandana to keep my scalp from burning(I shave my head once a week these days). I drank about two gallons yesterday, when temps reached about 94 degrees. I also drank several more gatorades. Never took a single piss all day, as I no doubt perspired just about any fluid intake right back out of my system. freak out

Ugh. Temps like that do me in. We had gorgeous weather Friday through Sunday, but beginning today, the heat and humidity are supposed to be on the rise. From reports, they say we could hit or be damn-near 100º for a day or so. freak out

We've been getting frequent late afternoon thunderstorms, usually after 4 or 5 PM-they usually last about an hour or two, and provide .25-50 inches of rain each time. With a rain deficit that is still well over 12" these "popup" thunderstorms are not bringing much relief. nonono

The temps this week should be around 90 degrees, or a little less. We'll probably see upper 90's in temps in July and early August.

There was an article in yesterday's Atlanta newspaper that stated that without some sustained rain, say from the remnants of a passing tropical storm, temps here in Atlanta will routinely approach, if not exceed, 100 degrees during July and August. It also said that there is no immediate relief in sight, from the kind of rain we need, at all. freak out

Ugh! We just had a massive electrical storm, here, the power went out for just a minute, but the lightning wes flashing and the thunder was booming away. It rained really hard, so hard I thought it was hail for a minute, but I think it rained so hard, it was tough for any of the rain to be absorbed into the ground and it lasted for maybe a half hour, was all.

I still become very nervous and very uncomfortable, but thankfully, Carol had yesterday off and she was there to keep me grounded. My Mom, Aunt, Carol and I go out every Wednesday evening, now and by the time we got to Mom's to pick her up, we were in the middle of another horrible storm. freak out The lightning was fierce, it seemed to be right over Mom's house and the rain was coming down in sheets, the wind was gusting...we actually had to pull off for a few minutes, until we couls see the road, again.

They dropped me off at my Dad's, to visit with him for a bit, while they attend their meeting and I was asking Dad if they'd had severe weather, as he lives about 25 miles from where I live and he said it was pretty bad. I told him about how I still react to electricl/thunder storms and he said he can remember me being a wreck as a wee young one and even attending parades was tough on me....when the firetrucks would start their sirens and such, Dad said I'd practically run up his body in fear. I think I have more phobias than the normal person! :<!--emo&lol:-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

The heat is on literally, as me and my two crew members continue to grind away in the heat. Four weeks ago I tipped the scales at 210 lbs. I'm now down to 202 lbs. I always lose about 10 lbs in the summer heat, but this summer has been hotter than usual, and I have dropped about as much weight in the last four weeks as I do for most summers(in three months). freak out I'm still shooting to reach 185 lbs, a "target" weight set by my doctor. I'm also developing my usual summer tan. I'm fortunate in that I rarely burn from too much sun-I do use a medium strength sun block on occasion.

That's great that you've already dropped weight and are screaming towards your goal weight. Although, sweating it off in high temps and hard work may not have been your first choice in losing the weight.

That's great that you tan, me, I look like a train-wreck, if I'm in the sun for too long. I'm supposed to avoid the sun as much as possible with my Lupus, but even before that diagnosis, I would burn to a crisp in no time at all. freak out

Not sure if I would call it "screaming" towards my target weight...feels more like I'm creeping towards it instead. tongue-1

I don't have any complicated workout regimen for my weight loss either. I do these three things: walk, pushups and less consumption of food. That's it. smiling jackass

You know, a friend of mine cut back on dinner helpings and that was about it and they dropped more weight that way than trying to count calories. I think another thing that sometimes makes losing weight for some folks is how fast they eat....they eat so fast, their brain doesn't have enough time to tell them they are actually full and by the time they do slow down or stop, they are stuffed and can't understand why. I know when I was still working, we had 30 minutes for our lunch break and as the forumlator/blender, things sometimes moved so quickly, I would be a bit behind in my paperwork, so I;d stay behind and catch that up and often, by the time I got upstairs to eat, I was down to 15 minutes......eating fast became my way of life. lol

lol I know, I eat during the holidays until I'm sometimes in such agony, I could kill myself for being such a glutton. In some instances, we have to enjoy it while we can, as Mom doesn't do much cooking, these days, so if she makes ANYTHING, we enjoy it and some dishes just seem to be made only around the holidays.

Which kind of confuses me with some dishes. I can understand as kids, we can't control too much as to what's placed on the table, but as adults, we kind of can. I know that green-bean casserole dish that uses French's French Fried Onions on the top is often a staple of holiday tables and I swear, it was the only time we had it. Now, Carol loves this dish, so she actually makes it throughout the year. Certain cookies or desserts are had during just the holiday season and I wonder why that tends to be the case?

Typical things I like at Thanksgiving dinner, and eat heartily:

-turkey(obviously tongue-1 )(and with gravy)
-(green) bean casseroles
-biscuits or rolls(or even both tongue-1)
-white rice and brown or white gravy
-ham ( groink! )
-black-eyed peas
-desserts: most kind of pies, but especially sweet potato, pumpkin, and apple pie ( groink! )

Things I probably wouldn't eat at Thanksgiving dinner:

-green peas
-squash(or any casseroles heavy on the squash)
-lima beans

I love mashed potatoes and gravy, I could make an entire meal out of that. groink! I love turkey, as long as it's moist, is there anything worse than trying to swallow a moutful of dry turkey?! freak out As for me, the few food items I wouldn't eat on Thanksgiving or any other time would be:

-Carrots
-Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce

Dessert-wise, I don't like anything with raisins in it and I'm not a fan of lemon meraingue (spelling?) pie. GB used to make about a dozen pies, when she'd come to the holiday meals, but no so much, these days. Her apple pie is to die for. In all honesty, it's the best I've ever eaten. She makes wonderful pumpkin pie, cherry pie and graham cracker pie with butterscoth pudding and a meraingue on that, although I'm still not a fan of meraingue. My Aunt makes awesome rice pudding...without raisins and it's so good, icy cold. groink! Wow, here it is early in the AM, months away from Thanksgiving and you made me hungry, Lee! tongue-1

Wow, here it is early in the AM, months away from Thanksgiving and you made me hungry, Lee!
Indeed, I have that effect on folks sometimes. tongue-1

The last couple of days have seen temps in only the mid 80's here in Atlanta, and some cool(mid 60's) mornings. It's back to the reality of summer, however, on Thursday and Friday, with temps back around 90 degrees both days.

On the plus side, I have been enjoying a recent spate of side work. In the last two weeks I have made approximately $200 in cash from a pruning job($100) and painting one side of a privacy fence($100). This weekend, on Saturday I'm going to clean and paint a small porch(projected income: $80 cash) and on Sunday work for a few hours at a friend's house transplanting some shrubbery and watering plants/shrubs around his large house(projected income: $40). Most of this "side work" $ goes into a fund I am building up to buy an HD TV at the end of the year. Yes, Kimi, I have decided to go ahead and get a hi def TV by Christmas, either a 30" tube widecreen-flatscreen HD TV or a 32" flat panel LCD HD TV. tongue-1

I'd like to find something closer to $550 total(after tax), which will certainly be possible during Christmas sales but I may end up spending $600 if I encounter something I like better. $600 is my budget and I will not spend any more than that.

:(

(just kidding)

I've noticed that a lot of the younger set on the internet, primarily teenagers, use all kinds of symbols and abbreviations, much of it referred to as teen "internet speak", Examples:

OMG = Oh My God!
Teh = The ...which makes me wonder why the hell they deliberately misspell it to begin with confused
LOL = Laughing Out Loud
XD = ...someone told me it's similar to the "rolling eyes" smiley emoticon
WTF = What The F*ck
ZOMG = extreme "Oh My God"
Meh = "Whatever", in other words, indifference or disdain
ROXORZ = ...I still have no clue what the hell this means eh?

Did I miss any, Kimi?

Other SPAM: I called Comcast today and set an appointment with them, for 7/21/07, to come out and switch me over to their high speed internet and digital voice(phone)services. I already have digital cable service with them, but my phone/internet is still with A,T & T(Bellsouth). I want everything on one bill. I currently pay $171 per month for my phone/internet/cable services between Bellsouth and Comcast. I am upgrading my Comcast "bundle" during the switch, picking up about another 50 cable channels, and my monthly payment, for the first 12 months, will still be about $40 lower a month than it is right now. thumbs up

Hmmmm....I think you hit most of the popular abbreviations. As for, ROXORZ, you have me stumped!

That's great about the budle you're getting. Skeet and his wife have the same kind of bundle, I just can't think who they have theirs through....I want to say Time-Warner, but I could be waaaay off. I know I wish we had their cable, it has some great channels! I think their computer at home my be Windows 98 and the damn thing is lightning fast with their package which includes the high-speed Internet access, too.

Any time you can save money on bills, that's a good thing. ;)

I opted to go with a "bundle" that is one step up in price from the most basic bundle Comcast offers($99 plus tax per month for 12 months). My bundle will cost me $114.95/month plus taxes/fees which will make it around $130/month, for 12 months/ That will save me $41/month for a year. (I've been paying $171/month for Comcast cable & Bellsouth phone/internet). After 12 months my bundle will go up to it's "regular" rate of $142.95/month, which with fees/tax will still be a little less than what I'm paying now. My current digital cable package affords me about 75 channels and a Pay Per View option(which I have never used honestly). My new bundle, to be installed 7/21, will afford me many more channels, including some Encore movie channels. Comcast's high speed internet service requires an OS of Windows 2000, XP or Vista, in order to operate properly. I have Windows 2000 Professional(business) installed on my computer.

That's a good question. I'll have to check into that. :)

I am also going to apply for a PT job with the Georgia Dome event staff in two weeks(assuming I can walk okay enough). They hire every year for ticket takers, field security, etc. The Atlanta Falcons play in the Georgia Dome, and other events, like pro wrestling(WWE), concerts, rodeo, and motocross are held there as well. A guy I used to work with for another landscape company works for the GA Dome event staff in security down at the Dome.
