Ever had the feeling that you were making a ton of $ for your boss, while you were given the crumbs? I've had this feeling often in my line of work, outdoor landscaping. To confirm a suspicion of mine I decided to do a little math. As a matter of my company's policy we do not work from Dec. 23-Jan 2 of each year. Basically I work fifty(50) weeks a year, making $12.00/hr, which = $470/wk(before tax). I miss, on average, about four(4) days a year due to illness or work-related injury(minor things so far), so we'll subtract another week for total weeks worked in the year(for me). We now have 49 weeks worked in a year. Multiply that by 470(dollars per week) = 23,030. I earn roughly $23,000/yr from my employer, as an official wage. For my services in the field my boss bills our clients $35/hr for labor(he bills them $30/hr for each of my laborers, less because they have less experience and are not pesticide licensed, as I am). I average about 40 hours per week over the course of the year x 49 work weeks = 1960. 1960 is the total man hours I work for the year. Multiply 1960 x $35(my billable hourly rate for clients)= $68,600. $68,600 is what our clients are billed over the course of the year for my labor-mine only now and not my laborers). Our company never has more than 10% of it's accounts unpaid-that means at any given time 90% of our billed work has been paid by our(mostly) wealthy clientele. 90% of $68,000 is $61,740. $61,740 is about what my company collects in labor for just me in a year. The diffrence between that and what I get paid, $23,030 = $38,710. Now, there are a few costs that keep our crew going in the field-fuel. We spend about $80 every other week to fill up the truck and small gas cans. That's $2080 for the year. Also, the truck's insurance, tag, and tax, which averages about $5000 for the year(mostly the insurance). Equipment maintenance is low, and runs about $500 for the entire year. So far that's $7580 for the year in expenses, for my truck, fuel, tag, insurance, and equipment upkeep. That still leaves a differrence of $31,130. This would also be the difference for the other foreman and his crew, give or take a few dollars, as he earns the same hourly rate, and works the same hours, that I do. $31,130 profit margin provided by me, in a year, to my company. The same provided by the other foreman as well to our employer. Our laborers, even at their smaller billable hourly rates, provide similar profit margins, somewhere, I figure, in the $26,000 a year range, per man. We usually carry five employees. Based on my figures, and including all five field employees, that is two foreman and three laborers, the total difference between the $ billed out for our work(90% collected) and the costs, for one year = about $140,000. I also know that the boss does charge more for labor from time to time, so that figure could be even more. $140,000. None of this includes the companies sales of plants and trees from the company owned farm(north of Atlanta). No wonder the company owner has been in a good mood for the better part of the year. |

Boy, I sure can understand that fear. I am the oldest, I have two younger brothers.....one is 5 years my junior and the other is almost 10 years younger. It's tough to see people that you love so much, get involved with someone you don't totally trust or that you have a 'funny' feeling about. It can be especially tough to try and talk to a brother or sister in these situations, because usually the brother/sister feels nothing but total love for the person they're with and close their ears to any concerns you might have for their significant other. I know sometimes they can get downright hostile, if you even say anything about the person they are seeing, so I learned a long time ago to let them be. I talk to my parents and make myself available for my two brothers and if they need to talk, I'm there and I listen, without giving my feelings, unless they ask. I was completely valid in a couple of instances about my negative feelings, but in the end, my brothers had to be the one to make the decision that these women were not who they really should be in a relationship with. I also don't throw in their face that, 'We tried to tell you!', because that can sometimes put more distance between you and your sibling(s). Nobody really likes to be reminded that they really messed up, they do appreciate your support and possibly a shoulder to cry on. |

About a year ago, the town had an argument about our house's large trees in teh front of our yard. See, we live right next to a colda-sack (spelling?) and people wre getting upset because they couldn't see anything, so the town came over one day, cut down our trees while we were on vacation, they hardly warned us, and left large piles of the trees there, not even doing ANYTHING to get rid of a piece of sawdust. They said we could plant new trees, if we moved them farther back, so one day, someone from the town came over and drew a harrobly guessed line straight across our lawn, it was crooked, really crooked, as in took NO time to measure it. So we bought new baby trees, planted them, and the next day, the same man comes to our house, and draws a new line behind a few of the trees erasing the old one. So, we were forced to move them back aobut half an inch? Now that the town has done this, cars go up and down the colda-sack zooming and not taking anytime to stop at the top of the road, we're lucky no accidents occured yet. This really ticks me off, we have a horrible govenor. |

From reading your post Corey I am inclined to agree. There is no excuse for leaving a pile of debris like that, but it happens. Here in Atlanta, GA it happens all the time, and usually by employees of the city. I have seen many of their crews working to cut away overgrown brush(shrubs/weeds etc.) without cleaning up any of the clippings/limbs left behind. I have also personally witnessed city employees on several occasions wielding backspack sprayers, presumably with weedkiller/water in the backpack tank, waving the spray wand to and fro into the wind, even when they are near small trees, "good" shrubs, and worst of all, people. When the spray wand is held too high, the wind can carry the vapors or mist from the released spray, what is referred to as vapor drift, onto things(plants and people) that obviously are not to be sprayed. thumbs down |

The DVD first appeared in 1997. Before that we movie lovers used VCR's to play movies recorded onto tape, and with inferior audio and video quality. Do you still buy VHS tapes now? Cast your reply and explain your answer. Thread starter-I do buy a VHS on occasion, though not too often. It is usually a movie I have been unable to find on official DVD, either because it has never been released on DVD, it was and is OOP(out Of Print), or is just always out of stock on DVD. Examples of VHS tapes I have: 1. Godzilla Vs Biollante(1989)(lbx and eng dubbed). I am waiting for this film to be released on Region 1 DVD. 2. The Deadly Mantis(1957)-I bought this VHS because this movie has yet to receive an official DVD release 3. Tarantula(1955)-I bought this on VHS also because it is not available on Reg 1 DVD 4. The Land Unknown(1957)-I bought this one on VHS for the same reason as #2 and #3 5. The Creature From Black Lake(1976)-I bought this VHS(in lbx) because I have never seen this film on Reg 1 DVD either I have about another half-dozen I bought, because none have been officially released on DVD |

I haven't purchased any prerecorded VHS in ages, but I still have several titles that either aren't available on DVD or I haven't been able to pick up, yet, including: -The Deadly Mantis -Tarantula -The Mole People -The Land Unknown -Cult of the Cobra As for purchasing blank VHS, my roommate, Carol and I still purchase those on occasion, as she has so many TV shows she tapes to view on her day(s) off and then re-records over them, again. |

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one Kimi. Movies like Tarantula(1955) and The Deadly Mantis(1957) will, IMO, eventually make it to DVD. Both of these films have recognizable 50's monster movie actors like John Agar, William Hopper, Mara Corday, and other "name" actors as well like Leo G. Carroll and Craig Stevens. As a huge fan of these older titles even I am hard-pressed to name any actor, off the top of my head, from 1957's The Land Unknown. Add to this the fact that the effects in this film are shaky, even by these B-movie standards, and I doubt we will see this old film on DVD anytime soon. I think what most fans(and non-fans) probably remember the most about The Land Unknown is the atrociously rendered T-Rex. I recall it with great fondness and amusement, but many will only see it as a horrendous prop.

That saddens me. :( I have always loved this film, not sure why, but the bad looking T-Rex couldn't even stop me from loving it. I know the main character, Hal roberts was played by Jock Mahoney and probably one of his biggest claims to fame is, I believe being the father of Sally Field. Another actor in the film was, William Reynolds and I can only really remember him in the TV series, The F.B.I. with Efrem Zimablist Jr. The female was, Shawn Smith, but I erally can't recall anything else she was in. I have two very cool original lobby cards from this film, I need to go get them out and admire them, now! |

I am familiar with that name, Jock Mahoney. Kimi, didn't he play Tarzan in a film or two? eyebrow Other VHS tapes I have bought: 1. The Legend Of Boggy Creek(1975) 2. Fantastic Dinosaurs Of The Movies 3. Creature From The Black Lagoon(1954)(bought way before it was released on DVD) 4. Revenge Of The Creature 5. The Creature Walks Among Us |

It's been a loooong time since I bought a VHS tape. The last one I can remember buying was the original MOTHRA or STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE (It initially wasn't available on DVD). And that was back in '99. I still use my VCR. I'll occasionally use it to tape programs that I've missed but that's about it. |

I also have Pulgasari(1985) and Godzilla(1998) on VHS. I remember being so fired up to get the 1998 film that I bought the letterboxed VHS of this movie because Suncoast Video did not have the DVD in stock. I hang onto it now as a memorabilia item, more than anything. I can see the day that VHS is no longer offered anywhere for sale or as rentals, that is, assuming that day hasn't already happened. I have seen no VHS at any Best Buy stores I frequent. I have seen a smattering of them at Blockbuster Video-they're usually relegated to the bargain bin(s) in some inconspicuous part of the store. The only place that I have seen big quantities of VHS was the Movie Trading Company store I used to shop at-they carried new and used DVD's, new and used video games, and bargain bin used VHS tapes. I actually found Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun(1969) and a few other hard-to-find DVD titles at this store. Much to my chagrin, the store closed last year. cheeky sick smiley |

Most of the video rental stores (i.e. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video) are downsizing their VHS inventory. However, I do have a video store down the road called Thomas Video that has a HUUUUUGE selection of VHS rentals. A lot of stuff that's rare too including bootlegs of several Asian and foreign films, including Godzilla. Heck, they had GMK available for rental a full year before the DVD was officially released in the States. Thanks to Thomas Video I was able to see GOJIRA for the first time. Not many video stores can offer what that place does. |

After almost 17 years in their home, my Mom and step-Dad have decided to go back to renting and began moving about two weeks ago. They had a very large older home and when they began hauling stuff out of there, I was stunned.....it's amazing what you can accumulate in 17 years! Mom and Jim have decided to have a lawn sale, once they've sorted through things and my roomie, Carol and I decided to sort through the apartment and add our cast-offs to the sale. We began Thursday night, after Carol got home from work and this was her scheduled three day weekend, so bright and early Friday and Saturday we were up, sorting and tossing some items away and saving others for the upcoming lawn sale. As it stands right now, we have 12 huge boxes/plastic totes filled with items for the sale! I'm talking clothing, VHS, video games, books, glassware/dishware, cookbooks, knick-knacks, etc...etc...etc! The closets in the apartment actually look bare! Mr Green Carol went into work for some OT, today, but if the truth be told, I think she went in, just to get a break! I don't like clutter in my apartment, I like a clean look and I'm also the type that perfers organization, so as mentioned, a lot of this stuff was in closets as well as a storage shed we have, outside. I'm still amazed at how much stuff we managed to pack away! On the up-side, I found a few items I was searching for and was afraid had been tossed by accident and Carol and I have vowed, NONE of this stuff is coming back to the apartment, we will try and sell everything and what doesn't sell, we will donate to a couple of places that sell items for goodwill and obviously, some things that are worth more, if they don't sell at the lawn sale, I may eBay them. I'm so sore and exhausted from these days of sorting, I'm kind of glad the lawn sale won't take place until we return from our trip to Canada......I need a break! ;) |

Clearing out 17 years worth of items sounds like a truly juggernaut operation, or as we used to say in the Navy, an "all-hands evolution". I hope you and the roommate found some things worth keeping. It certainly sounds like you did. Good luck with the yard sale. Have you considered placing an ad in the local newspaper about it? Also, beware of "early birds", those individuals that may want to shop too early.

I was especially thrilled, my Mom made up a small photo album, years and years ago of several photos of Mom, Dad and myself, when I was but a wee babe and a few sprinkled in of me no more than a year old. I was terrified it had been lost or accidentally tossed, but I came across it in a box in the closet. Jimi Carol and I both found some other treasures that we're not perpared to part with, yet, as well. Mom said we'll have this sale for three days....a Thursday, Friday and Saturday and I am thinking we'd be wise to advertise this in the weekly local paper. Thanks for the well wishes, I seriously want the stuff we have decided to part with, to sell, I refuse to bring anything back with me!

I have helped a few friends set up their yard sales, and it seems like in each case the only way to sell everything was to "price" everything to sell. I can remember back in 2002, the last yard sale I helped with-my friend's wife and potential buyer were squabbling over an old lamp-the potential buyer(another woman) offered $5.00 for it and my friend's wife wanted nothing less than $8.00. These two women argued for over 15 minutes before Bob(my friend) took the lamp out of his wife's hands and sold it to the customer for $5.00. Imagine these two arguing over a 25 year old lamp and three(3) dollars crazy -Bob took over the yard sale from his wife, to make sure everything sold, because had she been in charge, no one would have probably bought anything. The point: try not to haggle on the price of anything. Remember, people show up at these things looking for "steals"-give them one and they will usually buy more things. thumbs up |

Amen! :) I think we have priced things quite well, but if someone finds something they want and think they should have it for less, I'm willing to give them a bargain, as you said, it's better to have the stuff moving off my hands and into someone else's. :) I think some folks have these lawn sales and sit and look at all they've decided to part with and have second thoughts....I really hope this isn't the case with me, besides, I'm thinking, the more I sell, the more money I'll have for more important things....like adding more DVDs to my collection! ;) |

Thanks for asking, Lee. :) Mom claims to be feeling a lot better, these days. They finally diagnosed her with another infection, this time a bacterial infection. It's taken time and a lot more bad days than good, but she seems to be bouncing back, finally. :) Mom, my step-Dad, Jim and two grandchildren that live with them, just moved over the past three weeks or so and that takes a lot out of anyone, so Mom is trying, with the help of my niece and nephew, to empty five boxes a day. They have a lot of the house settled, but still have a ways to go! Amazing what you save in one house after living there for almost 17 years. |

In 2004, my Dad, youngest brother and his wife, Carol and I went to Canada. We rented a cabin from people that live in this area, but own some land on a lake up there and have several cabins to rent. The lake is right outside the cabins we rent and it's absolutely gorgeous up there. Last year, the five of us went back and had a different and larger cabin and we had a wonderful time, caught a ton of fish and definitely relaxed. This year, it will just be Dad, Skeet, Carol and myself, as Skeet and his wife had a baby in May and they don't think it's a good idea to take the baby, this year. We are leaving on 02 September and we'll be back home on 09 September. We stay at Lake Dalhousie, which I believe is about 30 minutes outside of Perth. Now, we go into Perth a couple of times while at the cabin, for supplies and to look around, but don't see a whole lot in the way of real shopping. I was wondering, does anyone who may live in that are or who may have visited that are know of any Best Buy or Wal*Mart stores in the area? Better yet, can anyone suggest any good retail stores in or around that area for DVD shopping? I may be way off, but I believe Ottawa may be an hour or so north of Perth, if that is of any help? Thanks! :) |

If I were you Dan I would keep a close eye on what this video store of yours, the one offering VHS, sells, particularly anything letterboxed. Many older films have not been released on official DVD, and a decent VHS may be your only way of seeing them. Examples from my own movie inventory that I refer to in regards to this statement: 1. The Land Unknown(1957) 2. Tarantula(1955) 3. The Creature From Black Lake(1976)-lbx 4. The Deadly Mantis(1957) Note: Tarantula will be offered on Reg 1 DVD on 9/19 as part of a five-movie set by Universal. These VHS tapes allow me to watch these films periodically-the other titles(excluding "Tarantula") have not been released on Region 1 DVD |
