Thanks for the replies, Lee and Ro-Dan. :) I had done some searches and basically found that we will have to travel to Ottawa, if we want to do any serious shopping. I was hoping there might be something a bit closer to where we're staying, but again, thanks for the links and responses! thumbs up |

I think I can speak for Dan when I say that if you, or any other member of this site, needs any kind of assistance that is within our means of render, we're both there. :) I hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip to Canada. I have heard that Canada is a beautiful country. Will you get any snow up there in September or is that later in the year? eyebrow |

You both have certainly proven that time and again! thumbs up Canada is a beautiful country. I've been there five previous times, before. To Niagara Falls a couple of times and it's just a great place. This will be my sixth trip to Canada and my third to, Lake Dalhousie. The people are so very friendly in that area and make you feel very welcome. Some areas to the north can get snow in September, I've heard, but it's been quite nice the two previous years we've been there. I think it's funny, I believe it was on the TV series, The Golden Girls and they were discussing how bitter cold Minnesota was in the winter season and someone was from Canada and said to Canadians, Minnesota is like Florida! :D It's funny, we can get to our destination in 4-6 hours and it constantly amazes me that we are actually in a foreign country! It's one thing to travel in the U.S. and cross from one state to another, but to suddenly be in Canada and realize, this is a foreign country, it's just a strange feeling. Carol was totally amazed back in '99, when she and I went to Niagara Falls and within 4-5 hours, we were in Canada....where she lived in Florida, it took 8-9 hours just to get out of that state!

Indeed, assuming you drive the speed limit... I have visited Florida many times(though not recently) and, though it is not very wide, the state of FLA is quite long. As much as I would like to visit Canada, I do not think I could live there, nor anywhere in the northern regions, because I would not be able to handle the annual brutal winters. Example: I have a friend(from college) I still keep in touch with, who used to live in Minnesota(he now lives in Dover, Delaware). While in Minnesota(Rochester) he recalled an incident in which he stepped outside into his garage(during one winter) without drying his hands(he'd been washing dishes after breakfast). His hand literally became stuck to the garage door handle-only with warm water was he(assisted by his dad) able to remove his hand from the door handle, without ripping a considerable amount of skin off He also told me stories about it being so cold in MN that it sometimes was painful just to inhale the cold air while standing outside. There was also the requisite duties of keeping the chains on his car tires(for snow and ice), or the time a snow drift over four feet high kept them from opening their front door No sir. As far as I'm concerned, this wintry weather might be nice for a vacation of sorts for me, but not as a permanent area in which to live. nod |

:) I guess it just depends on where you've spent the majority of your life. You're located in GA, Lee? I was born and have lived my entire life in northeastern PA and living in a year-round warm weather climate seems out of the question for me. Always ncie to visit these warm-climate areas, especially around February, when it can be sub-zero temps and we're ass-deep in snow, so to speak, but I love the changing of the seasons. It's almost as if my body feels the changes coming, I have just recently started to 'feel' Autumn coming on and I very much look forward to that. Are you just far enough south, Lee, that you don't really experience the seasonal changes or does your part of the state see the colorful leaves and such? |

I live in Atlanta, GA. We do not get many hard winters here in Atlanta. That said we do, on occasion, get a rough winter, replete with ice storms and snow. The last major snowfall here was the big one in 1993, that resulted in 6 inches of the white stuff here. It has been stated by meteorologists that Atlanta gets a blizzard like the one in March of 1993 about once every 100 years. We usually get, about every 2-3 years, a minor snowfall of some sort, perhaps up to an inch in accumulation, which is fine by me. You can see brilliant fall colors in the leaves on the trees, especially in the foothills of north Georgia-red, yellow, bronze, they are all there. We do have seasons here in Atlanta Kimi-they just aren't as defined as those in the northern regions. eyebrow |

There are some here in the northeast that would say, at times, our seasons are a little too defined! ;) Actually, the heat and humidity bother me so much, I wish I could afford to live in Alaska! If I could live where Summer-time temps only got as high as the mid-upper 60s, I'd be a happy person. B) |

Atlanta tends to be inland enough that the city usually does not bear the full brunt of a hurricane, unlike, sadly, New Orleans did, last year, when Katrina hit "The Big Easy". That said Atlanta can receive extremely unpleasant weather after a hurricane has, while moving farther inland, been downgraded to a tropical storm or tropical depression. Example: in the fall of 1995 Atlanta was hit by the remnants of Hurricane Opal. "Opal" passed across Atlanta and surrounding areas as a tropical storm. Here in Atlanta I was living in a cottage-style house on my dad's two acre suburban property, which was adjacent to his house. There were sustained winds of 45-50 mph, and gusts in excess of 60 mph. I wandered outside and looked up to see pine tree swaying like cornstalks on a breezy day. It was unnerving. Later that night an 80 foot poplar tree, notorious for it's shallow root system, crashed across my dad's backyard from a neighbor's(a law office) property. It sounded like a bomb going off. Fortunately the tree did not hit my dad's house or his(parked) car, though it did bring down a power line across his back yard, and it blasted to pieces his old(and unused) dog house and pen in the backyard. It took two days for a tree removal contractor's employees, with chainsaws, a skid loader, and mini dump truck, to chop up and remove the fallen tree. The bill for the tree removal, paid by my dad's neighbor: $1750.00 Over the next few days, driving around Atlanta, there were downed trees everywhere, mostly smaller and medium-sized ones, and a handful of goliath-sized trees that had crashed in Midtown(an older and heavily wooded suburb of the city). In some places the downed trees made neighborhoods look like war zones.

Wow, Lee, ehre's hoping TS Ernesto doesn't cause any damage to your city. I see the coast of Georgia is under a wanring/watch. Looks like my area will receive plenty of rain from TS Ernesto, come Saturday, so we may be driving in and through some rain on our way to Canada.
I know how you feel, R-Dan, I think our bodies really begin to prepare for the chnaging of the seasons, as I mentioned, I actually sense the Autumn season, now. My roomie is originally from Florida, she was born and raised there, but I think she's enjoying the seasonal changes, now, although driving in snow is still not tops in her book!

I think if you learn to drive in an area where snow is common, it is a big help. I remember back several years ago, one of my younger brothers and his family was spending the weekend at my Mom and step-Dad's. I lived, at the time, just up on the hill from my Mom and came down for a Saturday morning breakfast with the family. My brother needed to go over town for a few things and since I was heading there myself, I offered him a ride. Well, we'd had snow the entire week and had received an additional 2-4 inches of snow, overnight. I was driving a small vehicle that was standard shift and as we started over town, we were chatting away and I noticed the back end of the vehicle was ever-so-slightly, 'fishtailing'! I was slightly concerned, but always got the car under control and just thought because the roads hadn't received much attention, yet, that the road was simply, 'greasy'. We finished our errands and headed back to Mom's and I was still sliding just slightly when I'd finally had enough and said to my brother I couldn't understand why I was sliding around a little and he replied, because I've been lifting up your emergency brake a little all the way over and back! He thought that was hilarious, me...not so much and I threatened to break every finger on his hand, should he decide to play that game, again!

Actually The Wicker Man(1973) DVD was only $10.99 at Best Buy, which was why I went ahead and bought it. This movie has, despite being classified as a horror film(and deservedly so), some often funny moments and, I think, a somewhat comic "element" to it, that is, until the climax. Watching the devout Catholic police Sergeant Howie Vs the local, and often bonkers, townsfolk of Summerisle alone was well worth buying this DVD-the ending, which surprised me the first time I watched this film(a Netflix queue), was at once ironic, certainly brutal(for Howie that is), and sadly fitting, considering the depths of fanaticism by which the pagan citizenry of Summerisle clung to their beliefs.

I'm Back! Thanks for the well wishes on a safe and enjoyable trip, Lee, they were and are appreciated. Mr Green We left PA in a driving rain, drove all the way to Canada in rain on Saturday, it rained all day Sunday and the weather was cool and the waters choppy, but I still managed to catch the largest fish I have ever caught, at any time or any place....an 18" smallmouth bass. Mr Green Carol caught a 15" largemouth bass and my brother caught several nice bass and northern pike as well as rock bass. Carol caught some rock bass and perch as well. Dad buggered up his back a little and so he limited his time out on the lake, because of that, but he and I would sit in the cabin and talk up a storm. We had a night of building a campfire and eating burgers, 'dogs' and steaks on the grill and just had a really nice time. The cabin is very comfortable with plenty of beds for all, a gorgeous enclosed porch that looks right out on the lake and probably the most important thing of all...indoor plumbing! ;) While it's always fun to get away, for me, it's always great to get back to my own place and bed. That's a really good price for an outstanding film. The thing that makes this film so creepy for me is there's simply no arguing with or convinving these people that they are nuts! Edward Woodward did a fantastic job as Officer Howie and Christopher Lee is always great in a role and this was quite different for him....the villian perhaps, but an understated villian, in my opinion. |

A reviewer on another site made reference to the "persistent sense of dread" that pervaded in The Wicker Man(1973). In that I agree. When Sgt. Neil Howie could not leave the island, due to a malfunction of his small airplane, I began to sense that he was in danger-not immediate danger mind you but an underlying kind, which rears it's head later as a sudden and/or violent event against the protagonist(in this case Sgt Howie). The appearance of more villagers, wearing overhead masks that resembled various animals e.g a rabbit and a pig, seemed more bizare to me than threatening, as if these animal-headed villagers had been drinking too much ale, or smoking too much weed or some other local, home-grown tobacco Edward Woodward was, IMO, excellent as the serious, no-nonsense, religious, by-the-book law man, versus the carefree, part sexpot, part drunkard, and all-fanatic mentality of the Summerisle villagers. Recall Kimi that Edward Woodward would bring his screen presence to TV in the mid-eighties with the television series The Equalizer, in which he played ex-CIA agent Robert McCall, who tries to atone for his self-perceived sins as a ruthless CIA interoogator and hit man by helping common, everyday people in NYC through a small newspaper ad. One of my favorite 80's TV series, by far. thumbs up Christopher Lee was also very good, as I have come to expect, in The Wicker Man. |

As someone who has "roughed it" on many an outdoor camping trip, and made many excursions into the woods with a roll of toilet paper, I can tell you that indoor plumbing, for these outdoor vacations, is a most underappreciated luxury. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo--> I'm glad you had a safe trip, replete with a nice haul of fish and lack of contact with any large, and potentially hostile moose, or a rogue Sasquatch. thumbs up |

The animal masks were just ever so slightly creepy and had me a tad nervous as to what was yet to come. You know, I was working second shift in the mid-eighties and never became familiar with, The Equalizer, but heard a ton of positive things about the series. thumbs up |
