After a nine(9) year hiatus(from 1975's Terror Of MechaGodzilla, Godzilla returns in this 1984 film, which begins the Heisei G films. Discuss this movie here.

Haven't seen the original version, only the Americanized one. Eh, I don't really mind Raymond Burr in this one. Good film, I like the solo films.

Absolutely no disrespect to Raymond Burr but I think you would like the original(Japanese version) better. And while I did not mind Burr in the '85 titled film(I welcomed his character) I did mind Travis Swords, who played the smarmy officer who seemed good for nothing more than annoying wisecracks. IMO this guy was a complete jackass and his character offered nothing in the G '85 film.

Me too. What a bad actor.

If I could get a copy of the original on a Region 1 DVD, I would.

Nothing? That's not fair. He did offer Dr. Pepper.

That's true, at least when he wasn't drinking it.

Nah, he was advertizing it though. Just so G85 could get distributed in the USA.

You might try writing Warner Brothers, as they now own the rights here in the U.S. to Godzilla 85. Just a thought... :)

I have very fond memories of my dad taking me to the movies to see Godzilla 1985. It was a Sunday afternoon and Raymond Burr was being interviewed on TV and discussing the film. Out of the blue my dad said to me, "Wanna go see it?" My eyes lit up and I said, "YES!" My dad was a fan of the original Godzilla: King of the Monsters and I think he was curious to see Raymond Burr in another Godzilla movie. Safe to say, we both enjoyed it.

My old man was a fan of the 1961 Mothra film, and also liked War Of The Gargantuas(1966). As for Raymond Burr, I have always appreciated his performance in Godzilla, King Of The Monsters(1956)-it was steady, solid, and not too over-the-top. I have read that he had great fondness for the film. In fact, were it not for Mr. Burr Godzilla 85 might have been released as a comedy, believe it or not. He was among those who protested, out of respect for the character of Godzilla, and thank God a Godzilla comedy was never made. On the topic of Raymond Burr I also enjoyed him as Perry Mason, the original series and the later made-for-TV movies. :)

Wow, my dad turned me onto War of the Gargantuas too! Actually he introduced me to a lot movies. I attribute my love of film to that man. He's the best!

Indeed, my father helped me take a liking to these films. Years ago(late 80's and early 90's) stations like TBS(and even AMC) would show these monster flicks, and I would watch them with my father, that or the Atlanta Braves(he was an unwavering Braves fan). In regards to the latter I am glad he lived long enough to see the Braves win their first(and unfortunately only) World Series, in 1995. I watch these movies in small part, to honor the memory of my father.

I think this is one of the best Godzilla movies ever. Very interesting story! It really captured a time period of the cold war. Very interesting to see another countries perspective on it!

That is I think one of the most important elements in the original Japanese version that, absent from the hack job called Godzilla '85, makes it so much better than the butchered American version. That, and the absence of military buffoons like the one played by Travis Swords. tongue-1
