Indeed. Matthew, you said:

The only thing The Return Of Godzilla has in common with the 1954 film is that Godzilla is the only monster and that is IMO not enough to prove it's a remake

The two films also have at least one other thing in common: both include American actor Raymond Burr in their American versions. winky tongue-1

Oh, guess there was more things in common then I remember... still, I don't think TROG is a remake, since there are many scenes showing it's a sequel.

I think he was the smart ass major? If so, I think that all of his character's scenes should be cut.

Travis Swords played "Major McDonough". he was the smarmy jackass who was put in his place by "Steve Martin"(Raymond Burr) and Martin's explanation of the effects of an EMP(electro magnetic pulse) in North America. winky

Evan, check out this blog entry about the American version of 1984's The Return Of Godzilla: http://monstermemories.blogspot.com/2009/03/godzilla-85-monster-land-article.html

The Return of Godzilla.

This was the first Godzilla movie I had ever seen. I saw it back when I was either in Kindergarten or First Grade. I remember little about my original viewing but I do remember this. It was hard back then to keep me still to watch a movie but I sat and watched this one. The movie was a rental and we never got to rent it again, but I always wanted to see it again. Being that young I thought Godzilla was real and that they had made the movie either from or based on real events.

I enjoy this movie a lot. I own a Japanese copy (which as always is superior to the Americanized Version). Even though I enjoy this movie so much, it does not get played as much as some of the others in my library. However the same could be said for Gojira 1954. I love both of these movies but they do not get watched as often as the others, possibly because of the serious tones.

I do wish however there would have been more destruction scenes. It seems Godzilla just marches to Shinjuku to a standstill and the rest of the film is him fighting SuperX.

I don't care for the closeups of the large robot Godzilla.

The other shots of Godzilla are magnificent. They truly show a terrifying beast.

The return of Godzilla's old roar was excellent accent to the dark tones in this movie.

The Return of Godzilla was definitely a great return for the King of the Monster.
