Well I don't say I blame this one for kinda being a box office flop....there wasn't alot to like....I uninteresting monster that looks very derivative of Battra, the bad special effects and kinda dull fights and all around cheap looking production values...not exactly a winning entry of the franchise.....though certainly on the worst film of this era....I won't repeat it but it's something I think everyone here already knows what I'm getting at with that |

Uh, ...Godzilla Final Wars? ![]() shiftyeyes I like to watch Godzilla Vs Megaguirus(2000) from time to time. Like you the monster in this film reminds me an awful lot of Battra, which for me isn't a good thing. There's also the issue with the wires being frequently visible during Megaguirus' flying scenes which is definitely not good and, considering the technology available for the time this film was made, considerably perplexing and very annoying for me. Like all kaiju films I try to remember what I consider the positive things(for me) as well: -I liked the idea of "The Dimension Tide" as a device with which to try and rid Japan of Godzilla and his accompanying menace forever. I also thought the idea of a creature entering our world through this machine was an interesting way of creating an(eventual) opponent monster for Godzilla...and not just another creature erupting up out of the ground or arriving from space(like Ghidrah or Gigan). -I liked the initial scene where the G-Graspers try to fight Godzilla on foot. I'm not sure I really ever believed they would do anything to really hurt Godzilla but their bravery was undeniable. -I liked the young lady who played "Tsujimori", Misato Tanaka. I've seen her character described, at other message boards, as being bland and uninspiring. I disagree. She was hard working, committed to her job and showed great courage during her exploits in this movie. I also thought she looked quite nice as well, especially at the end when she finally let her hair down. ![]() -I liked how Tsujimori opted to cling to Godzilla's side after the monster surfaced literally right under her on the ocean's surface. Cool scene. -I liked the scene where the small meganeura swarm and attack Godzilla. -I also liked, overall, the battle between Godzilla and Megaguirus. There were a few aspects of it I didn't like but it entertained me fairly well. The trailer for Godzilla Vs Megaguirus(2000): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=85...2N5WArQKxydjzBA |

I've always liked watching strong, assertive female characters in action/sci-fi/horror films. Tsujimori is no different, from Godzilla Vs Megaguirus(2000). I enjoyed the scene where she punched the bureaucrat on top of the building near the end of the movie. The only thing I would have liked better would have been seeing her throw this fellow through a glass window. Hell, I liked the way she carried herself the entire film. Physically, I wouldn't say she's quite as hot as Rei Kikukawa, Yumiko Shaku or even Chiharu Niyama, but she is, IMO, very pretty: ![]()

I just watched this movie. What a movie. By far one of the best Godzillas we will see. So many great things. Visible wires? Who cares? The suits in this one are art, like all the others. The filming is top notch, new ways to present godzilla, like using computer image manipultion to similate fast movement in the suits. The music was superb too. |

Just watched this one, in Japanese thankfully. I'd give it a 6/10 I think. I liked it better than Godzilla 2000. The music was much better. The special effects were better. The suitmation still doesn't impress me that much. And I don't like the look of Godzilla in G2000 and GvsMegaguirus that much. The ending was pretty cheesy. I guess I just don't like the Millenium era that much. Besides the awesome GMK that is. The suits look too much like suits. After seeing Kaneko's Gamera trilogy and GMK, any other modern Kaiju/Godzilla movie is going to have a very hard time impressing me. Edited by crowmagnumman, Sep 3 2008, 10:07 PM.

![]() I've seen that very sentiment expressed at many message boards, a testament, I think, to the talents of Shusuke Kaneko. Aside from the various Showa kaiju films I hold in very high regard the 90's Gamera trilogy films and GMK are right there as well as my favorites, and it's no coincidence: I believe Shusuke Kaneko is a very talented and skilled movie director.

Godzilla Vs Megaguirus(2000) - Revisited Getting rained out from work today I decided to watch the only Millenium Godzilla film I haven't watched within the last two weeks: Godzilla Vs Megaguirus, the second movie in the "Millennium" G film series, originally released in Japanese theaters back in early November of 2000. This film isn't a favorite of mine but it has grown on me over the years as I've watched it, usually a once per year viewing. Observations, both positive and negative - Thumbs up: 1. actress Misato Tanaka, who plays "Major Kiriko Tsujimori" of the G-Graspers, the anti Godzilla unit of the JSDF. Tsujimori is brave, feisty, determined, and dedicated to her craft. She's physically not imposing at all, a slender, petite and slightly built woman, albeit with the attitude of a 1000 lb gorilla: get in her way and you'll get flattened. ![]() 2. the Godzilla theme during the first Godzilla vs G-Graspers sequence: this was the first time it was used. I thought it was great when I first heard it and I still feel the same way about it now. ![]() 3. many action/effects sequences are IMO quite good: the swarm of Meganeura(spelling?) that attack Godzilla on the island, the initial skirmish between Godzilla and the G-Graspers, and the sequence where Major Tsujimori latches onto part of Godzilla's dorsal to avoid drowning. All very cool shots! I especially liked the effects used to render the smaller meganeura swarm: the flying monsters would definitely have overwhelmed anybody sent to try and eradicate them from Terminix or Orkin Pest Control. 4. seeing Yuriko Hoshi again ![]() 5. the rendering of the "Dimension Tide": some nice effects are used to bring this machine to life 6. the battle between Godzilla and Megaguirus: overall I thought it was nicely choreographed, save for the leap and subsequent pile driver-like tackle by Godzilla on Megaguirus. Megaguirus was a tough opponent, blasting Godzilla about the head with its large claw like appendages, stabbing Godzilla in the torso and partially draining the monster king of energy, and dragging Godzilla headlong along the ground into a building. It also, absorbing some of Godzilla's energy, managed to launch a powerful, rolling fireball at G, turning Godzilla's own energy, temporarily, against him. Thumbs down: 1. wires are clearly(and painfully) visible during Megaguirus' first appearance out of the flooded city and its first airborne attacks. Not good. 2. the movement of Megaguirus during some of its flying sequences made the creature look stiff and reminded me Battra and other flying Heisei G film monsters that looked unwieldy and cumbersome when supposedly in flight 3. some of the matte shots, as Godzilla makes landfall and an eventual battle with Megaguirus, looked shaky 4. a couple of underwater shots of Godzilla swimming looked more like something out of a video game Overall, I like Godzilla Vs Megaguirus just fine. It entertains and holds my interest when I watch it once a year or every eighteen months. My rating for this movie: 7/10 The film's trailer: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2877974 |

Sadly, I have not seen this film in two years since this is the worst dub of all the Godzilla films. But nice overview Lee!
