i think there are problems with the film
Out of curiosity what things did you dislike about GFW the most?
Well the Goji suit for one. Rememeber Godzilla 2000, how awsome the Fins where. GMK's where also good. Then we see GFW. We see the spikes, and it looks like we gone back to the showa age!
The New York scene, I'm not sure americans act like that.
The monsters die too quickley. Hedorah deserves more that 40 seconds to fight! But was still good, thoughs are it's few flaws. The rest is great!

Everything negative you said, plus may I mention that only one or two pieces from Keith Emmerson were used in GFW...

Well, let's hope most don't act like that or, as the guy wearing the pink suit and hat would illustrate, dress like that either. tongue-1

And may I mention this: perhaps none of Keith Emerson's music should have been used in Godzilla Final Wars. winky

Look at the credit listing for the score - most of it was done by Daisuke Yano...

I thought it was a really fun movie. Lots of cool star wars and matrix rip off's. This definatly ranks as one of my favorite G films.

10/10

Nice

Some excerpts from Tucker's review I believe are worth noting:

Quote:

No one goes to a Godzilla movie to see a gigantic motorcycle chase that seems to go on for about twenty minutes, no matter how brilliantly it's done
Indeed. winky

Quote:

though perhaps I'd find the sequence more bravura if I even cared about these characters (mutant soldiers, one enslaved by aliens) in the first place
Which would imply that Tucker, like many other critics of GFW, didn't care much about the human cast of characters, Evan...which goes to script writing and acting.
Quote:

I really don't want to see another eighty minutes of Matrix-like fight scenes ... though maybe I would if there was anything even vaguely resembling character development, or even characterization, in the first place
Agreed. winky

Quote:

Kitamura spends so much time on this kind of thing that the manner in which he cuts the monster sequences is often borderline insulting
Borderline insulting? To me it is insulting.
Quote:

...and is packed with lengthy fight scenes between humans and human-looking aliens, and these parts, however amazingly well done, become particularly annoying because they seem to be eating up so much screen time that should be devoted to the real reason we watch these things: THE GIANT MONSTERS
Exactly. A giant monster movie should allow the monsters to be the central attraction of the movie and not two Asian versions of Keanu Reeves, one the good guy and the other the alien bad guy, duking it out.

Let me go on record here and say that I think Ryuhei Kitamura, in GFW, created an action movie with Godzilla and other giant monsters in it. He did not IMO create a "Godzilla" movie.

1. Well then I must be that rare outlier, eh?
2. I cared for them. The only films of the Millenium series which actualy beat IMO the characters in GFW is GMK or G2K...
3. That is Tucker's assessment, not mine. And I would not mind the extra scenes...
4. It is not insulting to me. IMO, Kitamura's short fight battles kind of reflect Shinji Higuchi's take while filming the Gamera series. Keep the shots/scenes short as to help them keep their "coolness". While Kitamura doesn't achieve this as well as Higuchi, he does prety good with me none the less.
5. No, humans are. I am prety sure Honda also said something to this extent. The monsters are featured in the film, but it is the humans who move the plot along. The two sining examples of this in GFW is the Xilian Kid Commander and Naotaro Daigo. Hell, might as well give Frye some praise. His character was nice.

Now, let me show you a quote from Tudcker's review, though I am picking selected quotes from the last paragraph:
Quote:

I can't say the thing is boring... I wonder how time will judge this particular entry in this particular and unusual series; it's so rare for anyone on the staff to have tried something so radical and different, and enough of it works that I don't think it automatically to be dismissed... I can't deny there's tons of brilliant filmmaking in it; I just, again and for the last time, wish that it had been focused a bit more clearly.

The film is prety good. It just isn't the sharpest tool in the shed kaiju-wise. If there was more kaiju footage, would it suit you or would you still need to deem it neccesary to cut out the martial arts/motorcycle chase scenes?

The film is not as bad as many people make it out to be. It is not a good anniversary film, but it does good for a casual Godzilla film in the tradition of the 70's, only instead of Fukuda's Bond-esque sub plots, we get Kitamura's martial arts direction. Plus, I say be grateful it is not worse. If you look at the deleted scenes playing in the end credits, there is a good five minute scene that was cut, though we only see a second of it: Ozaaki being scanned with him praying.

heyo What's an "outtlier"?

Moving a plot along and being the predominant feature of a movie are two different things. The human cast of a kaiju film can "move" a film's plot along without taking the place of the monsters as the predominant attractions in a kaiju film. The human cast and the monsters should compliment each other in these movies...one not being overly emphasized over the other. winky

Frye's character was cool and he had a few funny one liners. That does not mean that Don Frye is a good actor...which he is not. He's a K-1 fighter and has been a great one for a long time. winky

More kaiju sequences would have been a major plus for me in this film. The "motorcycle chase" scene was okay. I didn't have any problem with that.

The disastrous box office showing of this movie IMO suggests otherwise. tongue-1

1. I meant outlier... a mathematical term.
2. And do you feel that is what happened in GFW? I don't think so...
3. That is how come I said I liked his character and him himself...
4. I see.
5. That is more opinion than anything. General opinion as it seems, but still an opinion. And I think that if released for another year other than for an anniversary year, it would have done better.

Which got the vast majority of screen time in GFW? The human cast or the monsters?

A: the human cast and by a country mile. winky
