Back in the day where many of my Godzilla films were pirate video copies someone had done from laserdicscs or other videos, I used to really like Godzilla Vs Space Godzilla and could never really understand the flack it got. Having just watched the R3 DVD [the first time I'd seen the film in at least 5 years], I now find the film really rather poor [normally I find the opposite is true, films seem better when watched on a better format]. It's not rubbish, after all, it's still a Godzilla film, but is definately at the weaker end of the series for me, right from the opening bit of Moguera, which is a pale rip off of Mechagodzilla's first appearance in the previous movie.

I don't think the director and writer were that interested in Kaiju to be honest, they seem more interested in the human characters and character development. That's fine, but a great portion of that didn't work for me either. I always found Miki Seagusa an interesting character but the Heisei series to me never really knew what they wanted to do with her. Here, she's still a pawn in various plans and doesn't really seem to have her own mind, while placing her centre stage shows how the actress playing her isn't really very good [nice to look at though and the other lady even nicer!] The so-called romance between Miki and the soldier is reduced to one scene on a beach and then at the end they are in love. I have no problem with romance, but it was really sloppily done here [I cared more about the man/cyborg woman near-romance in Terror Of Mechagodzilla]. It almost seems like some vital scenes are missing.

As for the monster stuff, it's a real mixed bag with sadly more bad than good. Some scenes take ages [Godzilla coming ashore], others seem rushed. Generally the effects are fine, but the Moguera/Space Godzilla encounter amidst the foam asteroids looks really awful. Space Godzilla may be just Godzilla with crystals and Biolllante's mouth but he actually looks pretty cool and quite horrid to me. Little Godzilla is just pathetic though. Moguera's ok but it seems stupid that G-Force have made another big robot, and what on earth was the point of Fairy Mothra? The worst thing is possibly the end fight-it's just so dull, static and unexciting. Heisei and Millenuim battles sometimes suffer from this in my opinion, but never as bad as in this film. I was actually almost bored, and this is coming from someone who adores monster battles!

I did like the score this time round [I didn't used to], some of the themes are fine if far more western-sounding. Overall though I think this one fails more than it succeeds and maybe deserves the criticism it gets after all! It does have good aspects though [such as Space Godzilla] which belong in a better film. It's still a Godzilla movie, so I'll dig it out from time to time to watch again. And it's a thousand times better than Gino [Deanzilla].
