In 1995 Toho released Godzilla Vs Destoroyah, the Heisei film in which Godzilla dies(from radioactive meltdown). While IMO a better entry than the '94 and '92 films I still think it could have been better. In this film G has a new enemy: Destoroyah, a monster borne of the Oxygen Destroyer, having multiple-stages, and whose final form is a 120 meter colossus towering over even Godzilla. Godzilla "Jr." also joins the mayhem. Post your opinions and reviews of this film here. :) |

Great film. Des is really cool (and powerful), meltdown Goji looks awesome, and Goji Jr. finally gets into some serious combat. Second to Bio as best movie in the Heisei series. |

I love the 'meltdown' look of Godzilla in this film and the film certainly isn't a bad film, but I felt the the battle between Destoroyah could have been better. I'm not sure how or why I feel this way, but with most battle scenes between Godizlla and any foe, the scenes are much more involved and exciting, this at times seemed too rushed. Still, not a horrible film and I did like the origins of Destoroyah. |

While I really don't think it's bad, when watching "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," I can see so many things that could have been done a great deal better. The idea of a monster originating from the Oxygen Destroyer is cool, and the "burning" look for Godzilla is one of my favorites, not to mention some of Ifukube's finest film music, but so much of the movie just reeks of lost potentional. Bringing back the character of Emiko was a nice touch, but she's wasted in a small, forgettable part. The rest of the characters, especially those related to Dr. Yamane and thus adding to the connection to the original film, could have been done a lot better. I also think Destoroyah itself could have been executed better in all its forms. The human-scale form just looks hokey, and the adult stage looks GREAT...until it moves. The middle forms fare the best, but they could have stood a little more work. And the whole confrontation ripped straight out of "Aliens" was just atrocious. I do think the fights are for the most part satisfying. I especially love the scene where Godzilla and Destoroyah get up-close-and-personal and start slamming into each other like sumo wrestlers. And Godzilla's death is unforgettable, though the maser tanks and what have you in that sequence all look like dinky little toys. All-in-all, I find it watchable and even enjoyable in parts, but Godzilla's "final" film should have been a lot better and definitely could have been had a little more effort been put into it. |

Godzilla Vs Destoroyah(1995)-Packmule's thumbs up: 1. Destoroyah(final form)-a towering behemoth that dwarfs Godzilla and gives the monster king a hellified battle 2. Godzilla Jr.- this smaller version of Godzilla gets a chance to step up and show that he's got game-he does 3. Miki Saegusa(played by Megumi Odaka)-a sweetheart, what else can I say about her -------Packmule's thumbs down: 1. the death of Godzilla, Jr.-I'm not saying this didn't work out from a "script" perspective, but watching G Junior get killed by Destoroyah really pissed me off 2. Godzilla's "meltdown"-again I knew that ultimately G was going to die in this one, but watching it was still hard for me---------Overall: a solid entry in the Heisei Series(I give it an 8.0 on a scale of 1-10) :)

Not really a big fan of this movie. However, I really enjoyed Junior. I felt bad when he "died". Godzilla's death was heart-wrenching--mostly because of Ifukube's 'Requiem' theme. Burning Godzilla was awesome and that reporter chick was RED HOT. |

On December 9, 1995 the Toho Motion Picture Company released Godzilla Vs Destoroyah, aka Godzilla Vs Destroyer. This movie was planned, by Toho, as the final Godzilla film, the 22nd in the series, accompanied by the announcement, seemingly heard around the world, that Godzilla was going to die. The story: scientists, believing they have discovered a new, and unknown life form, have actually discovered a species of prehistoric, crab-like creature that, due to the residual effects of the Oxygen Destroyer in the strata(soil) below Tokyo Bay, quickly grow into human-sized monstrosities, eventually joining together to form a massive, powerful monster, Destroyer. Meanwhile, radiation from subterranean uranium deposits has caused a major growth spurt in Godzilla, Jr, and has also caused Godzilla's reactor-like interior to ramp up, a phenomenon that scientists predict will lead to a large nuclear explosion. The authorities lure Godzilla Jr. into a fight with Destroyer, hoping the battle will attract Godzilla, who can then be destroyed before he explodes. In the ensuing battles Godzilla Jr is killed by Destroyer, Godzilla, in a rage, exacts revenge on Destroyer, G and the Super X3 killing the juggernaut monster. Finally, Godzilla "melts" down, vaporizing. His radioactive mist seems to revitalize Godzilla Jr(that's how I interpreted this scene), as G Jr can be seen in the dissipating mist in mid-roar. -------Observations: this film has, I think, a very serious "feel" about it, and a darker tone. Though I rarely get emotional watching any film I admit being totally pissed off when Godzilla Jr. was killed. I also, like Miki Saegusa(played by the always lovely Megumi Odaka ), did not like the authorities luring G Jr. into battle with the adolescent(?) form of Destroyer to attract the attention of Godzilla. Kind of despicable, though I do undertand their motivation. Enough rambling. More later. crazy This movie is available on Region 2(from Yesasia.com) and Region 1(Columbia/Tri-Star). Post your thoughts and critiques of this movie her, along with anything related to it, including the DVDs. :)

A great film to end the Heisei series, which is the the best series in my opinion. The suits for all the monster were great, especially Meltdown Goji's, it was amazing. The SPFX were decent, especially during Godzilla's meltdown phase. Story was great, especially with that tear jerking moment at the end :( Its definatly in my top 5 Godzilla movie list. |

Well, I like this movie...one of my all-time-favorites now, and a lovely ending for my favorite Heisei-series.The close connection to the first movie is also nice to see.The ending really made me cry a little bit, Godzilla's death was very touching as well as Miki's crying. :( The dialouges of the english international and the german version were a little bit stupid, so I'm really happy now to have the Region 2 DVD and english subtitles. Many dialouges are just better in the original version. :) |

It's such a shame that this movie isn't available in a subtitled version here in the U.S. The current HK dubbed version is intolerable. |

So do all the guys that turn into various Ultraman incarnations. :) The film: there has been great debate at two other kaiju discussion forums about the gender of Destroyer. I have always considered this monster to be genderless, which also happens to be th general consensus among the participants in these debates, which at times reached intensities not seen since Lincoln V. Douglas
