So now that I've started building my collection of Godzilla movies, I'd like to get most of the Heisei series on DVD in the best quality I can find. I'm gonna want Return of Godzilla, maybe Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Mechagodzilla II, and Destoroyah. Spacegodzilla sounds like a real bomb, so I won't bother with it for now.

Mechagodzilla II is already available in its original form on Region 1 DVD. But the rest will be harder to find.

So let's say I wanted to start with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. I've got a couple choices.

1. DDDHouse.com. It's Region 3. I don't have a region-less DVD player yet, but I figured it might be higher resolution than a bootleg because it's an official release. Final price including shipping is $8.98.

2. Japanesemonsters.net. This one seems to be Region 1. They claim it has great video/audio quality, 5.1 surround sound. It also has a 2nd disc with extras. I can't find the shipping price anywhere. Maybe it's free. The price listed is $15.00, which can be discounted to $10.00 using the coupon code.

So does anyone have any prior experience with either of these places? Any opinions on which place I should buy from?

Well I hear Space Godzilla is awful, so I just skipped that one
very funny

The major gripes on Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla(1994), from what I gather from reading reviews and other kaiju message board content, is primarily certain special effects shots, the plot and the score.

There are several scenes in this 1994 film that are, IMO, horrendous, including the first space battle between Mogera and Spacegodzilla. Other matte shots(showing a massive 100 meter tall Godzilla on the rampage) leave a lot to be desired. The score seems, IMO, like something more akin to a sci-fi movie and not the types of soundtracks we're accustomed to hearing in G movies.

i hate the American versions of the Heisei movies, they cut all of the credits out. But on "Starz" several years ago they were showing a dubbed version of Godzilla vs Destroyah that actually had the full credits

I have purchased many discs from this vendor, located out of Delray Beach, FL. Their discs are all Region 0, which will play just fine in a Region 1 DVD player or a code free or multi-region player as well. They use outstanding DVD-R recording media as I've never had a problem with any of their discs.

When I ordered from them I paid $3.00 shipping for the first disc and $1.00 shipping(per disc) for any additional discs. Suggestion: they should have a phone # and/or contact email address on their main page. Call or email them about their shipping rates. You should receive a reply within 24-36 hours. winky

I have purchased discs from both Japanese Monsters and from DDDHouse.com. You'll spend less money buying the R3 discs from DDDHouse but their titles have little, if any extras whereas Japanese Monsters.net usually includes extras(trailers and/or featurettes), and 5.1 audio remix option(s), on their discs.

That might be true if a DVD-R vendor were using poor recording media. In the case of Japanese Monsters.net they use excellent recording media so the quality of the picture you see on their Region 0, which is a 'burn" from the official (Toho) Region 2 disc, will be the same as what you see from the Region 3 "official" DVD releases sold at DDDHouse.com.

Crow I want you to "bookmark" this site and NEVER order anything from them: http://www.ultramanstuff.com/
These guys are an example of a vendor that uses poor recording media. I ordered several discs from them several years ago(all movies) and every one of them began having major pixelation issues and during the first viewing of the discs! I have seen others on various boards complain about this particular vendor. winky

If you opt to buy a code free or multi-region DVD player here are two brands to avoid: Akai and Daewoo. These two brands generally, and consistently receive the lowest customer satisfaction ratings. Also, neither has effective customer service support for any of their products. Brands scoring high marks in these kinds of DVD players include Pioneer, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic.

Awesome. Mr. Smiles You've been extremely helpful. I hope these titles get an official release on Region 1 sometime. I'd have no problem with buying them again if that happened.

Here's the Region 3 DVD, released by Universe Laser, at DDDHouse.com: http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_details.php?ProductID=6192

I can also provide you with links, by PM, of two DVD-R vendors who'll sell you high quality R0 DVD-Rs of Godzilla Vs Destoroyah(which will play in a R1 or code free DVD player) in Japanese language w/English subtitles, for $15(or thereabouts) plus shipping. Mr. Smiles

Finally watched this movie. It was good, but I thought there was room for improvement.

There were a couple of scenes near the end that really made it worth it. The scene where Godzilla finds Junior when he's practically dead and especially the final scene when they're trying to stop Godzilla from melting down. And then Godzilla dies. Pretty powerful stuff. And the last part with Junior was good.

It's too bad the Heisei era ended there.
