In 1966 Toho released Ebirah Horror Of The Deep, aka Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster. IMO an underrated film. You have a little bit of everything here: a mysterious island, the requisite "bad-guys" in The Red Bamboo, Ebirah, a gigantic arthropod with a very unpleasant disposition, a giant condor, Mothra(adult form-near the end of the film), and of course the monster king himself, Godzilla. My only real knock on this film was the condition of the G suit, which was really starting to show some sag...Post your thoughts and reviews of this film here. :) |

I loved this movie, possibly my favorite out of the Godzilla's career. It had the great island theme which I enjoy and a really cool monster. |

Indeed, a welcome entry in the series for me. I actually was kind of glad to see Ebirah return in GFW(2004). He fought Godzilla hard in this film. I think he deserved another movie appearance. ;) |

I absolutly love this film! The main characters were interesting enough, the human plot is one of the best ever in a Showa film, Ebirah is really cool and looked great. I'd give this film a 4/5 Stars. |

Ebirah is a nice creation and should appear more, Godzilla's suit looks like it being through hell, but its still fine. The Red Bamboo deserved what happened to them. The Giant Condor was a bit lame and got killed fast, the jets lasted longer. The fights between Godzilla and Ebirah were well done and nice to watch. |

Wow, how did I ever miss posting in this thread? shocked smiley I think at one time, my hopes were far too high, the first time I saw this film, but over the years, this film has really made for an enjoyable afternoon of viewing entertainment. Ebirah is a great foe for Godzilla and their scenes together are really fun. |

I didn't like the idea of Godzilla having feelings or affection or whatever you might call it for that woman. It reminded me too much of another big monster...Im going to watch this film again soon though, since it is next on my marathon. I'll post more thoughts after a fresh viewing. |

And neither did I, that is, when I had a crush on Kumi Mizuno. I guess I'm the jealous type. In all seriousness I have often wondered what the hell was going there between Godzilla and the woman-his actions clearly protected her from the Red Bamboo, though I'm still inclined to believe it was coincidental. I should watch this movie again and look a little closer at that sequence. I look forward to reading them. thumbs up |

Just got done watching this film again. It was nice to see after a long absence. First off, the human part of the film, while not being the best story, is far from the worst. It was nice to see all the returning faces and everyone turned in a pretty good performance in my opinion. The Godzilla scenes were done pretty well as I remember them. The two Ebirah fights were a very enjoyable watch with the exception of the rock volleyball sequence, which is used in too many Showa films. After Godzilla throttled Ebirah's ass though I wished he would have finished him off. One of my gripes was the segment of Godzilla stomping through the power plant. While the miniature plant was done well, I didnt like that he had to step on that flat structure and then hit it with his foot a couple times to make it break. Everything else he touched broke on impact and it seemed out of place for that one structure to require so much to destroy it, considering he stood on top of it with all his weight and he still had to keep hitting it. The condor scene was humorous but didn't make alot of sense. I guess they just wanted to throw a little more monster on monster action in there. No arguments here. About the scene where he "protects" Daiyo...It wasnt really as bad as I had remembered it, although I wish if anything he would have just ignored her and continued on his way. All in all though, it doesnt take a whole lot away from the film. In conclusion, I would say I enjoyed the movie, not the best G film but far from the worst. Sorry for the long post. Next up is Son Of Godzilla. If desired by members of this forum, I will post fresh thoughts on that film as well. |

I have seen reviews of this film and a recurring sentiment among the reviewers is that "The Red Bamboo" were a reference to Communist China in this film. Your thoughts on this? One of the challenges for Toho's special effects crews on each Godzilla film included not only the construction of miniatures but making them in a way tailored for specific scenes, whether it be for a kaiju attack or for something else, like water or a wind simulation. Success in this regard was usually achieved by Eiji Tsuburaya's effects crews, but not without the occasional failures. The most famous of these might be what transpired during the filming of 1962's King Kong Vs Godzilla: "Solomon" Hirose, the suit actor for "King Kong", was supposed to smash the corner of a building as he(playing "King Kong") entered Tokyo. Hirose, a burly and bull strong man, had great difficulty in destroying the plaster based construction of the building miniature. Hirose ultimately managed to pound off a chunk of the miniature. Agreed. That's about how I also would sum up my thoughts on this film. Please post them. Thanks. :) Note: the scene I was referring to involving Solomon Hirose in the Kong suit takes place at 1:24 of this American trailer for "King Kong Vs Godzilla": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-imwz5gP5U |

Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster - Revisited Getting rained out from work today I had a chance to sit down this afternoon and watch Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster(1966). Now that I watch almost all my DVDs using my Blu-Ray DVD player I was interested to see how many of these Sony DVD releases of the Showa Godzilla films would look. I wasn't disappointed as this film, like others, looks noticeably better in the Blu-Ray player, the array of colors, including lots of yellows and reds, really standing out. Observations- thumbs up: 1. the overall design of Ebirah, an enormous marine arthropod that menaces the islanders and, at the end, even the Red Bamboo. I'll be the first to admit this giant crustacean isn't my favorite kaiju. That said I thought it looked fairly realistic, including its antennae, claws and mandibles. 2. Kumi Mizuno: what a beautiful woman and we get to see her in a skimpier outfit for the duration of the film. 3. the generous use of high speed filming 4. parts of the cinematography of this film looked very good, especially certain shots of the islands 5. Godzilla Vs Ebirah I and II: I liked both battles overall, despite some aspects of the fights I didn't like(see "Thumbs down" below). Ebirah, despite having no beam weapon or other special power gave Godzilla a fairly good physical battle 6. the direction of Jun Fukuda. It's no secret Fukuda had disdain for the Godzilla films he was tasked by Toho with directing. He remained the good "company man" and produced a fairly entertaining film nonetheless. This was the first G film directed by Jun Fukuda, by the way. 7. Haruo Nakajima turned in another solid performance in the G suit, utilizing his famous "attack" and "stalking" postures to great effect 8. the brief skirmish between Mothra and Godzilla, a reminder that these two monsters will not be exchanging Christmas cards anytime soon Thumbs down: 1. certain matte shots and other effects shots were subpar, including the visibility of the wires, regarding both Mothra and Ebirah 2. the Godzilla suit is clearly showing wear and tear in this film, evidenced by the sag in the suit under the arms. 3. the huge avian kaiju who attacked Godzilla. This Rodan wannabe seemed a little out of place in this movie and was, not surprisingly, dispatched easily by Godzilla's oral beam 4. many of the water tank shots looked...well, too much like water tanks. Overall: a solid entry in the Showa Godzilla series, despite its fair share of flaws. thumbs up Bonus: click the link to see a nice trifecta of Showa Godzilla film trailers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAcYJuKp0UM |
