Well, that would have been ok, but it's not the suit that would bother me, but what might happen to godzilla.

Your concern here being that Kong would have beaten the daylights out of Godzilla, or your concern being simply Godzilla's absence from an "Ebirah" film in 1966 with only Kong and the giant crustacean? |

But if Godzilla wasn't going to be in it, shouldn't you just be afraid of that in the '62 film? |

There's an excerpt in this blog I noticed that should be corrected: The excerpt:
It should read: The Walter Reade Organization, the company which distributed the film as a straight to TV film, said this in a press release:

Is it me or does Godzilla appear as a Villian in this movie or maybe a anti heroe, He doesn't seem very heroic, and seems to be a force of nature. Like how the good human cast reawakens Godzilla to wreak havoc upon the Island. |

I've always found Godzilla to be a little bit of both in this film. Clearly he's a menace to the "Red Bamboo" but he's also IMO a menace to the group of human characters and the native islanders as well. The humans woke Godzilla counting on the fact he'd follow his past tendencies to immediately rampage and destroy anything in his way on the island, which also happened to be the "Red Bamboo". Godzilla's actions obviously benefited the group of survivors but only IMO out of coincidence. Recall that Godzilla did fire off a blast of heat breath at Mothra before Mothra ascended into the sky with the basket of survivors. It looked, from this scene, that Godzilla, having already blasted the giant vulture out of the sky and ripped(literally) Ebirah apart, was ready to continue taking out his hostile ways on Mothra. |

Seems like a strange way to stray the series. After Ghidrah, He seemed like a heroe a trait he kept, most dismiss Godzillas traits in this movie, because the film isn't big with fans, But I feel this movies makers forgot to give Godzilla the right emotion. |

Pincer Movement: Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster(1966) -revisited While legendary Toho director Inoshiro Honda gets the vast majority of props from die hard Godzilla movie fans, and deservedly so, there's also IMO a lot to be said for director Jun Fukuda. In interviews Fukuda has expressed disdain for the Godzilla films he directed. Nevertheless, Fukuda's Godzilla movies are always entertaining and action packed, including the first Godzilla movie directed by him: Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster, aka "Ebirah Horror Of The Deep", which originally opened in Japanese theaters back in 1966. This film is the first Godzilla film not to receive an American theatrical distribution, being released direct to television by the Walter Reade Organization. Many Godzilla movie fans find this movie something of a letdown after 1965's Invasion Of The Astro Monsters. I'll be the first to admit that when I first watched Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster on VHS I felt similarly. No longer. As always I submit these observations about this film, some positive and some not, for the inspection of this message board community. Thumbs up: - the overall design of Ebirah, an enormous marine arthropod that menaces the islanders and, at the end, even the Red Bamboo. I'll be the first to admit this giant crustacean isn't my favorite kaiju. That said I thought it looked fairly realistic, including its antennae, claws and mandibles. I also liked the roar of the creature despite the notion that a lobster roaring is, frankly preposterous. ![]() - Kumi Mizuno: what a beautiful woman and we get to see her in a skimpier outfit for the duration of the film. Consider that even Godzilla seemed affected by her as he looked down at "Daiyo"(her character) and didn't harm her. - the generous use of high speed filming which as always slows down the movements of the monsters making them look more realistic - the overall cinematography of this film looked very good, especially certain shots of the islands -the primary antagonists in this film, the "Red Bamboo': stiff, unsympathetic and harsh in their enslavement of the Infant Island natives, they're easy to despise, especially Captain Yamoto(Akihiko Hirata) and his commanding officer played by Jun Takazi. Seeing their ship blasted apart by Ebirah and their base of operations demolished by Godzilla was very satisfying -the sequence where the kaiju sized vulture interrupts Godzilla's "nap": the bird itself wasn't remarkable at all but every now and then I think Godzilla fans need a reminder of just how powerful Godzilla is and seeing the monster easily incinerate the giant vulture like bird is definitely that ![]() - Godzilla Vs Ebirah I and II: I liked both battles overall, despite some aspects of the fights I didn't like(see "Thumbs down" below). Ebirah, despite having no beam weapon or other special power gave Godzilla a fairly good physical battle before being ripped, literally, apart by Godzilla. - Haruo Nakajima turned in another solid performance in the Godzilla suit, utilizing his famous "attack" and "stalking" postures to great effect - the brief skirmish between Mothra and Godzilla: as Mothra lands Godzilla thunders forward, approaching Mothra and launching a blast of his heat breath. Mothra drives back Godzilla by flapping her wings and creating hurricane force winds. We've seen this before but this brief confrontations is IMO a necessary reminder that these two monsters will not become allies anytime soon. Thumbs down: - certain matte shots and other effects shots were sub par, including the visibility of the wires, regarding both Mothra and Ebirah -the "volleyball" match played out by Godzilla and Ebirah as they knock the giant boulder back and forth in the air. The questionable, and I'm thinking physically impossible trajectories of the boulder during this sequence is definitely annoying to watch - the Godzilla suit is clearly showing wear and tear in this film, evidenced by the sag in the suit under the arms - many of the water tank shots looked...well, too much like water tanks. Overall, I have grown quite fond of Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster(1966) over the years. The Sony Region 1 DVD of this film is a must for any self respecting Godzilla movie fan! |

I watched the film last night, and I admire how it doesn't feel outdated. I like how Godzilla is treated like a Menace, both to the Red Bamboo, and the heroes of the film. The Costumes are all good, Godzilla looks good in my opinion, besides the sag effect. Ebirah looks very realistic, and has some good animatronic work on it, mainly the eyes. Mothra looks kinda ugly, an Insect shouldn't look good But the Mothra costumes is not the best. The Human drama is actually kinda interesting, when it comes to Godzilla actors, I always enjoy Akira Takarada or Kenji Sahara, and its one of the few times I liked the human cast. Not only is this a great Godzilla movie, Its a Classic. |

I watched the Japanese, English subtitled version of this movie last night. It wasn't a favorite G movie of mine, but I've started to soften my stance on that the more I watch it. I definitely like the original version over the English dub. While I was watching this last night I often thought how the water battles with Ebirah would've worked if they had been able to use King Kong instead of Godzilla. I personally now think that using Godzilla probably was a good choice as he is much more suited for those sea battles than KK. (I don't think a soaking wet Kong suit would've looked too good either for the time it would've had to have been used in those scenes) One thing that's very noticeable in this particular G suit are the holes where the actor needs to see from. Especially in the second battle with Ebirah. Overall, a fun Godzilla movie to watch that I'm enjoying more and more.

I decided to give Kraken's Blu Ray release of this film. I have to say the picture is stunning. I didn't think it could get much better than the Sony DVD but I've been proven wrong. The opening credits are still in English even though the disk includes the Japanese version. As for special features, I hope you like the trailer because that's all there is. However, it's more than we got from the Sonny DVD's. I'm definitely sold on Kraken's Blu Rays. |

Picked up the BD and had never seen this one before. It was a great deal of Saturday afternoon matinee style fun! No real complaints, I even liked the ludicrous volleyball scene and was happy to finally see it in its original context after having seen it cut into montages. |

I'm not going to pickup all of the newly released BD's, but this is one I'm going to grab. I've always found this as one of the more enjoyable Showa films, and Godzilla's clear victory makes me like this one even more. True that the suit is showing wear in this film, but it's a small complaint. I can't wait to see how this one looks on BD. |

I must have be about ten years old (maybe younger) when I found a VHS copy of this movie at a Half Price Books (hyperlinked for the reference of which version I found). I'd never seen it before, but I loved the idea of Godzilla fighting some kind of classic sea monster, even if it turned out to just be a giant lobster, so I was quite happy to buy it on a whim, and I remember loving it as much for the human characters as for the monsters. I think this was helped by the dub of the film that was used for this VHS. Very recently I learned that there were at least two localized versions of the film - one by Titra Studios, which many claim is the superior version, and the International Dub which, if I'm not mistaken has been used for most releases of the film, including the Sony and Kraken DVD releases. I've seen a review of the film recently that included footage of the international dub, and the voices and dialog for most of the characters were very different from how I remembered, and not just different, but annoying as all hell. The VHS copy I used to own had much better word-choice for much of the movie and more dignified voicework, standout examples being the priestess at the beginning and one of the main character's friends (the one that comes up with the fake formula that causes Ebirah to smash the Red Bamboo ship). This leads me to believe that the version I grew up with was the Titra dub, so I'm hesitant to watch the Kraken release in English. It's a shame that the rights to the Titra dub are so difficult to obtain. |

![]() As "dph" mentioned, the Kraken BD release is worth buying if you own a BD player because the movie's transfer indeed looks stunning. ![]() I've always found this movie appealing because Godzilla is a kind of "accidental"(or incidental) protagonist in this film. The monster is hardly the "good guy" but the villainous "Red Bamboo" terrorists are absolutely way more malevolent and unlikable in this movie than Godzilla. I also liked the fact that Godzilla didn't harm Kumi Mizuno's character after she was unable to run away from a revived Godzilla and simply had to cower against some rocks not far from the monster's feet. Godzilla seemed a bit curious about her as he looked down at her. |
