In December, 2002 Toho released Godzilla X MechaGodzilla(Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla). Once more Godzilla squares off against his robot counterpart, who in this movie is named "Kiryu". ---Discuss your take of this film here. :)

Pretty good. Watchable, although the human characters get boring. Kiryu is pretty sweet, and the AZC rivals the Dimension Tide as the coolest SDF weapon of all time.

With the exception of the Plasma cannon(chest-mounted weapon) from 1993's Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II, the AZC is IMO the absolute most hellified MG weapon in any of the "G Vs MG" films

A year after GMK(2001), in which Godzilla battles traditional adversaries King Ghidorah and Mothra(and veteran Toho kaiju "Baragon") Toho released Godzilla X MechaGodzilla, pitting Godzilla against another old opponent, MechaGodzilla, called Kiryu in this film, and a bio-robot constructed over the skeletal remains of a "previous" Godzilla, it's objective to defend Japan from Godzilla. The plot revolves around Akane Yoshiro, a soldier in the elite anti-Godzilla military unit who, during her unit's battle with Godzilla at the beginning of the film, causes her own armored and MASER-armed vehicle to collide with another vehicle, which flips over into a ravine, where it, and all it's occupants, are crushed by Godzilla's foot. Understandably guilt-ridden over the tragic, and completely accidental incident, Akane Yoshiro is relegated to low-key library duty. She returns to full duty at the request of her fair and loyal C.O. and gets her groove back, eventually, at movie's end, manually piloting Kiryu as it fights Godzilla toe-to-toe in the climactic battle...This movie is my 2nd favorite of the Millenium series(after GMK). I especially like the character Akane Yoshiro, a spirited, determined woman who refuses to let the tragic accident get the best of her. This character is played by gorgeous Yumiko Shaku tongue-1 , a former swimsuit model(what a shocker Mr Green ) turned actress. Post your impressions and critiques of this film here, and anything related, including the Sony Region 1 DVD. All replies welcome. :)

I really think this is the best Millenium film.
The plot was really good, the acting was good, pacing was kept constant.
The whole bringing back Godzilla's bones to mold Kiryu around was a cool thing about this film, it made me think how cool it was how Mill. Godzilla was (pretty much) fighting the original 1954 Godzilla.
Yumiko Shaku did an excellent job filling the role as Akane.
Character developement was good IMO, I cared about Akane and her struggle with the other Kiryu crew members.

4.5/5 for me, an excellent film.

Which is why, after GMK(2001), this is my favorite Godzilla film made after 1984. For me most of my enjoyment in watching these films comes from the special effects. I admit I have easily taken a liking to many, many films over the years simply because of their special effects, which have been the focus for me watching kaiju and other sci-fi movies. As I have aged things like storyline, character development, and pacing have become things I am acutely more in tune with as I watch (any) movies. Very few Godzilla films have been able to get me attached to a particular character-there have been exceptions, like Tetsuo(Akira Kubo) the inventor in 1965's Godzilla Vs Monster Zero, Dr. Bowen(Nick Adams) from Frankenstein Conquers The World(1965), or Miki Saegusa(Megumi Odaka) from Godzilla Vs Destoroyah(1995). Akane Yoshiro(Yumiko Shaku) demonstrated great humility, resolve, and determination at a time when she could have just as easily sank into self-pity and self-defeat.

I really like this movie (in fact I'm watching it as I write )
I love the Absolute Zero weapon.
Mechagodzilla moves really cool
One of my all time favorite scenes is When MG goes out of control. He blasts buildings and you see him walking toward you through the smoke
It just looks so awesome

I love the Absolute Zero weapon.

That is one hellified weapon. It reminded me of the "plasma grenade" weapon from the '93 Mechagodzilla, something of a misnomer since the weapon is a beam. That weapon did in Rodan in Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II(1993) and was used to great effect against Godzilla.

In my view, GxMG was a big step down from GMK, but a fairly cool G-flick nonetheless.

Truthfully Max, I like the storyline for Godzilla X Mechagodzilla(2002) better than GMK(2001)-conversely I thought the overall special effects in GMK were much better. One thing's for sure: these movies feature some truly gorgeous women in Yumiko Shaku(GXMG) and Chiharu Niyama(GMK). noddy

I watched this movie again last night. The opening was the best part of the movie. The rest of the movie is just so, so. Godzilla dosn't really have that much screen time. The rest of the movie could be called "The adventures of Kiryu". But when Godzilla do reappear right before the final battle, it was also a high-light. Music by Michiru Oshima was good, also. But I think the director forgot one thing. Fans like me Really like to see Godzilla kick the Crap out of his opponent. I didn't want to see Kiryu and Godzilla in a "Draw" at the end. I wanted to see Godzilla Blow the $**t out of Kiryu with that girl in it! Is that bad? Just like he did to King Ghidorah in GMK.

Agreed due to Godzilla's absence you'd thing that the least they could to it makes him kick some arse....This film I found pretty mediocre though definitely not as bad as some of the other Millennium era efforts as I can actually sit through it without being embarrassed by how far the films had sunk in the new decade, but still I would have liked a better film....I think it's pretty obvious I wasn't fond of this period in Godzilla films which I know a large many will disagree.
