In 1971 Tsuburaya Productions released the third Ultraman TV series, The Return Of Ultraman, aka Ultraman Jack, which had a 51 episode run from 1971-72. Discuss the TV series here, and anything else "Ultraman Jack." :) |

I've never seen this show but I really am curious about it. My dream would be to own the first four Ultra shows on DVD (Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultra Seven, and Ultraman Jack). Pack, you're a pretty big fan of Jack, aren't ya? Share some of your impressions about the show as I'm sure we're curious to read them. |

The Return Of Ultraman, aka Ultraman Jack, is, I think, a very good series. I have watched 26 episodes of the series so far(there are 51 episodes total). Some observations: 1. Ultraman Jack, while certainly a good fighter, does not appear to be as skilled in close-in fighting with kaiju and giant aliens as the original Ultraman(1966-67) and Ultraseven(1967-68)-he does display more agility, doing quasi-gymnastics maneuvers(like forward and back flips, even cartwheels) in order to avoid a beam weapon from his opponent, or to re-position himself to attack. 2. Hideki Goh, Ultraman Jack's human alter-ego, reminds me very much of Shin Hayata from the original 1966 series, though Goh appears younger(and probably is). Goh, like Hayata, is generally quiet and introspective, but steady and unflappable during times of crisis, and can get fired up if the situation calls for it. Goh is kind-hearted, has a sense of humor, and people, especially kids, seem at ease around him, just like Hayata. Goh died saving a kid in the first episode of this series. Ultraman Jack was, not surprisingly, impressed by Hideki Goh's sacrifice. Needing to merge with a human host in order to remain on Earth so as to assist MAT(Monster Attack Team) in fighting the menaces to the Earth, kaiju and alien alike, Ultraman Jack wisely chose the heroic, and good-hearted Goh, who is revived after the merging-subsequently Goh joins MAT. 3. The overall special effects are about on par with Ultraseven and the original Ultraman series. The episodes are interesting and seem mostly character driven, and vary in theme, like the first two Ultra series. 4. The kaiju and aliens-here is where I think this series seems to "downgrade", not drastically perhaps, but noticeably. The kaiju designs begin to border on the outrageous, which may not be necessarily bad, depending on your "tastes" in Ultraman kaiju design. My own are probably on the conservative side, so I'm more likely to disapprove of many of the monster designs in this series, as opposed to others who relish the unusual looks of the monsters. 5. The opening theme song: I like it. I like it better than the Ultraseven theme song, but not as much as the original Ultraman theme song. The "Jack" theme song is catchy, and the background colors and graphics are very cool. Overall: a good series in the Ultra-series. For any fan of Ultraman I would recommend getting this series. It is in Japanese language-still I am able to follow the episode plots fairly well. thumbs up |

Interesting. So the series is still pretty much more mature than the later series will become. Damn...Not only is there Ultra Seven but now I'm really curious about this series as well. |

I believe, Dan, that fans of the first two Ultra series would like this series. I know I do. Mr Green |

Very cool. That'll be on my list. I really hope this BCI Ultraman thing works out and is a success. I'd love to see Seven and Jack get domestic releases. |

Another difference I noticed between the two series that I believe I did not mention: in Ultraseven there are more plots involving aliens and their giant incarnations, as opposed to The Return Of Ultraman, which had more monsters that were indigenous to Earth, like in the original 1966 series. Personally, I like a series that has a good "blend" of both-"Ultraseven" seemed a little "top heavy" in alien episodes, though in no way has this diminished my enjoyment of it. |

Thanks to August I was able to see Return of Ultraman episodes 1, 37, and 38. Darned good show! I really liked the two-parted with Hayata and Moroboshi cameos. It was really a thrill to see those two legends together and shaking hands. And now I also like Hideki Goh/Ultraman Jack. And you're right, Lee, that theme song does get stuck in your head. I dig the 70's sound. Good stuff! Can't wait to see more! |

Indeed, these three, Hayata, Moroboshe, and Goh, are legends, certainly in my book, and I'm sure in the minds and hearts of all Ultraman fans familiar with the 60's and 70's episodes. The opening theme music for The Return Of Ultraman(1971-72) is, IMO, very good. I especially like the sparkling, rotating "kaleidoscope" effect in the background at the beginning, as well as the black silhouette of a single MAT member, which then shows the other member silhouettes fanning out from both sides, their weapons at the ready. thumbs up Like the original Ultraman, "Jack's" spacium beam does not always work on the monsters he battles. In one episode Ultraman Jack, flying close to the sun to recharge himself(during a difficult encounter with a tough monster), is intercepted by Ultraseven, who gives "Jack" the Ultra-Bracelet, and explains how to use it. "Jack" returns to Earth, and resumes his battle with the same monster. Result: using the Ultra-Bracelet "Jack" cuts the monster down to size, literally. evil beaver |

It makes sense that Jack would get his slicing weapon from Ultraseven, who himself is no stranger to slicing and dicing a la the 'eye slugger'. |

There is an episode of Ultraseven in which he slashes the throat of a monster-kind of startled me when I saw it-no blood came out of the monster's neck, but rather some king of hissing gas. Seven had a "Michael Myers" moment here for sure. evil beaver |

![]() There's yellow blood, all right. Seven must've got a major arterie and it's gushing everywhere. Even on Ultra Seven. |

I stand corrected. thumbs up I was not watching carefully enough I guess, because all I could remember was the hissing gas. Seven does whatever it takes to get the job done. thumbs up |

Betcha that bird wishes he'd never woken up. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing RETURN OF ULTRAMAN one day. It looks like such a great series. |
