In 1979 20th Century Fox released Alien. There have been many imitations of this film to be sure, but none, IMO, come even close to matching the white-knuckle terror and suspense of this classic science fiction movie. The story: the crew of the deep space salvage tug Nostromo is awakened from their hypersleep to answer what is believed to be a distress beacon from a desolate planet. On the planet's surface they discover a derelict space ship...and something much, much worse: a malevolent life form that breeds inside a human host. ----Discuss your take on this classic sci-fi/horror film here. :)

I thought it was rather dull. I'm not really a big fan of the Alien movies with the exception of James Cameron's Aliens. That one was pretty good.

I think this is a pretty good film, not sure if I prefer this or the sequel, more, which in itself would be a shock, but a solid effort, i think. I remember the first time I saw the chest-bursting scene, I was staying at my Dad's and had to sleep in the basement that night.......they'd redone the basement, but it was still a creepy place, late at night!

Probably an upside to this film was for any teen girls my age at the time, Sigourney Weaver gave us a female lead in a sci-fi/horror film that could hold her own against the an alien as well as most of the men on the ship. Up to that point, there never seemed to be a lot of female leads in a film that weren't in a role for anything other than her ability to be eye candy or for her ability to scream a lung out. Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite films have women that were more or less a screaming machine and I admire their efforts, it was just nice to see a woman kick some behind and not shrink back and do little to save her own skin.

I remember buying the version of Alien that included the alternate(deleted) scenes. Not really much extra, aside from Ripley finding Captain Dallas(played by Tom Skerritt) all webbed/gooed up against the bulkhead. I saw Alien in the theatre when it first came out. No doubt the "chest-bursting" scene is not something to watch while eating nachos and cheese tongue-1 -this film is very grim and melancholy, when it's not scary and suspenseful, which I thought set up the sequel(which is more fast paced and action-oriented). As for Sigourney Weaver as an ass-kicking heroine you'll get no argument from me about that as she showed remarkable guts in her battle against this hideous, violent alien species :)

More importantly was how hot she looked with that t-shirt and those little cotton panties on. B)

Indeed. I was somewhat startled by that scene, i.e. I didn't expect her to look that good... :)

Y'know she actually looked pretty hot in Galaxy Quest. She looks good as a blonde.

I never saw this movie, though I am familar with what it's about. I agree-she looks good as a blonde. I also thought she looked very good in Dave(1993) tongue-1

..it was just nice to see a woman kick some behind and not shrink back and do little to save her own skin.

Ellen Ripley(played effectively by Sigourney Weaver) certainly "kicked some behind", as you say-her method of defeating the alien monster was very clever(by blowing it out into space). There is no doubt that this film is not as fast-paced as it's direct sequel, Aliens, which was released seven years later in 1986. Still, I absolutely approve of this film as the "starter" film for the "Alien" series-it is a grim, dark, humorless, steady, methodical movie that blends suspense, terror, and gore like a fine-looking painting. As I have stated before, the acting and storyline must be good, and the actors, including Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, John Hurt, and Yaphet Kotto, all deliver. The score for this film also reflects the grim mood of the movie. thumbs up

Ever wonder if Sigourney Weaver would reprise her role as Ellen Ripley in an "Alien" film? Wonder no more: http://robojapan.blogspot.com/2008/08/sigourney-weaver-is-ready-for-another.html

Obviously it's all speculative at this point but I would absolutely be delighted to see her in another "Alien" movie, provided the script is good.

Alien(1979) is a movie I will definitely be getting on Blu-Ray DVD.

I think Alien and Aliens are masterpieces. The Alien 3 assembly cut is almost a masterpiece, but it has some flaws.

I've grown more fond of Alien 3(1992) with repeated viewings. I certainly like it better than Alien Resurrection(1997). winky

Note: I've edited this thread's topic title to include the discussion of all of Twentieth Century Fox's "Alien" films.

How would you rank them with both AVP films included?
