In 1979 20th Century Fox released Alien. There have been many imitations of this film to be sure, but none, IMO, come even close to matching the white-knuckle terror and suspense of this classic science fiction movie. The story: the crew of the deep space salvage tug Nostromo is awakened from their hypersleep to answer what is believed to be a distress beacon from a desolate planet. On the planet's surface they discover a derelict space ship...and something much, much worse: a malevolent life form that breeds inside a human host. ----Discuss your take on this classic sci-fi/horror film here. :)

Got my set in today and the packaging looks fantastic, each film is presented as a page of a book.

Going to check out Alien and maybe Aliens tonight. Most likely the directors cuts.

Oh if you have a BD player and are interested in this Amazon has the set for $90 ($89.99) now so a fairly decent price for a six BD set.

Have you watched all four films yet?? Do you think it's worth it for someone who already owns the DVD quadrilogy to plunk down the cash on this set?

Yes the set is well worth the money however Alien 3 and Resurrection don't look that good on BD. Then again I've only watched the Assembly cut of Alien 3 which the quality varies on a plus side they fixed the video and audio issues for the new scenes on Alien 3.

I'm not sure maybe Fox decided not to really restore those films, for all I know Alien 3 Theatrical cut could look REALLY great.

Alien and Aliens look simply fantastic on Blu-Ray I can't say enough how amazing they looked.

Plus the set is loaded with all the Quadrilogy features + The Alien Anthology features (first DVD release of the Alien films) as well as stuff from the LD releases.

In other words if you have a BD player pick this set up or if you plan on getting a BD player pick this set up you won't be dissapointed.

After watching alot of the bonus features from the quadrilogy I got the feeling that not nearly as much time and money were invested into restoring the second two films - probably because they weren't as popular. The director of Alien Ressurection seemed cooperative with the project when they were creating the Quadrilogy - he was one of the directors that was interviewed and he lent alot of insight to the film in the bonus features. Alien 3 however, seemed to be left out in the cold like a child that no parent wanted to claim, and that's somewhat of a shame because the film, despite a few shortcomings actually had a few really great things going for it in my opinion, such as the set pieces and the prison cast. I didn't like the CG effects used for the alien but when I watch the film I try to remind myself of how old it is and how primitive those effects were at the time.

You'll be happy to know that Alien 3 got a lot better treatment this time around, there's an interview with the director of the film so you get to find out why it had the production issues it did also the Assembly cut got remastered video and audio. I know for the audio portion of it they had the actors come in and re-record their lines.

Twentieth Century Fox is now denying that there will be a significant delay in the "Alien" prequel film...sort of: http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/22660

According to the NY Post the "Alien" prequel film will be a REMAKE and has been tentatively titled Paradise: http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/22661

I'll say this: if this film ends up being a straight remake of the 1979 classic Alien I'm going to visit Twentieth Century Fox's corporate office and whip somebody's ass.

In this latest update to the prequel "Alien" film Twentieth Century Fox, the film studio with the rights to the "Alien" movie franchise, would like to see Charlize Theron cast as the female lead in the film. Director Ridley Scott would, according to sources, prefer to see lesser known Swedish actress Noomi Rapace cast in the role. I don't know. On one hand, there was real potential for Scott to "fix" what is largely considered a broken franchise by making a truly remarkable come-back. This also might have encouraged James Cameron to try and salvage the Terminator series, when he saw that a rival quadrilogy that had also suffered from it's last two entries suddenly get back on track. I mean, think about it. We have two franchises which each spawned four (solo) movies, each quadrilogy is largely considered to have flopped in the second half. If their original directors were to have returned, there would have been a serious chance of Salvation (c whut I did thar?) for both of them.

Of course, there's also the fact that most, if not all, of the interesting sci-fi, horror, and action flicks that have come out recently have been remakes, sequels, reboots, and reboots of sequels. It's high time we had some fresh material.

Let's face it, we're never going to get an original plot or a completely unpredictable movie, but it's nice to see an old story told in a new way. I'd like to see a new setting and new characters, even if it's the same story we've heard billions of times before. It's better than straight-up remaking/rebooting a classic. So we'll see about Prometheus. Without a legacy like ALIEN to live up too, it might actually turn out pretty good... as long as it's not just an excuse to work with Russel Crow again.

It seems to me that a prequel, which is not a "remake, sequel, reboot or reboot of a sequel", of the film Aliens(1979) would have great potential for "fresh" material. We're talking about a movie which chronicles the events leading up to the Nostromo crew's disastrous discovery of the alien eggs on the derelict ship on the planetoid LV420. It was mentioned that this prequel would explore the origins of the Weyland-Yutani "terra forming" operations as well. I would think a prequel film would delve into exactly how Weyland Utani knew those eggs were in the derelict ship on LV420: recall that the Nostromo was deliberately diverted to the barren planetoid to check out the "distress" call, which we later learn was a warning beacon, presumably activated by the last surviving alien on the derelict ship, the huge "space jockey" whose fossilized remains we see in Alien(1979). That's a lot of new material to cover and I think serious fans of the "Alien" franchise, like myself, would have been keenly interested to see them.

Now I'm supposed to feel excited at the news that Ridley Scott, arguably the only director capable of directing a quality "Alien" prequel film, is going off in a new direction with a film sporting a completely different title and suggesting that his new film will touch on the "Alien" film franchise ONLY to "keen"(his word) fans of the "Alien" films? Not likely. I am disappointed by this news. Absolutely the film Prometheus, assuming it's directed by Ridley Scott, will be a quality film. Scott is among my favorite movie directors and many of his films, movies like Alien(1979), Gladiator(2000), Blade Runner(1982) American Gangster(2007) & Kingdom Of Heaven(2004), are favorite films of mine.

For that reason, and because of my respect for Ridley Scott and his films, I'm not going to say anything derogatory. Not so for the studio. To the Twentieth Century Fox execs who opted for this switch: kiss my ass. Aliensnarl

The news doesn't suprise me, like SM4 there seemed to be a conflict of interest between Mr. Scott and Fox Studios.

I hope one day we get a prequel or a sequel to the Alien Anthology, hell I'd be content with a proper sequel to AvP where it takes place in space and not on planet Earth.
