In 1979 20th Century Fox released Alien. There have been many imitations of this film to be sure, but none, IMO, come even close to matching the white-knuckle terror and suspense of this classic science fiction movie. The story: the crew of the deep space salvage tug Nostromo is awakened from their hypersleep to answer what is believed to be a distress beacon from a desolate planet. On the planet's surface they discover a derelict space ship...and something much, much worse: a malevolent life form that breeds inside a human host. ----Discuss your take on this classic sci-fi/horror film here. :)

Interesting. The writer has some valid points, and to a degree, I think they did paint themselves into a bit more limiting of a corner than they may have intended. But as far as the xenomorphs, I think the intrigue is still there, at least it is for me. At this point I'm actually even more interested to learn more about the engineers, but the trilobite and deacon are icing on the cake to a degree.

I'm not the biggest fan of Rapace as a an actress so maybe it is understandable that she couldn't "carry" a film of this magnitude without another stellar cast, but there's no reason they couldn't find a way to cleverly introduce a new cast like Cameron did with "Aliens".

My guess is we will see a sequel but not until 2015 or even 2016. winky

Okay, so I've finally seen Prometheus, and I have to confess that I didn't like it. It's just a mediocre sci-fi/horror flick with characters who only exist to be fodder for the horrific experiments of these "Engineers." For a bunch of scientists, these guys are UNBELIEVABLY reckless and, putting it nicely, unintelligent. And the entire plot depends on this.

You might argue that the plot of the original Alien required the same kind of stupidity to push forward, but with Alien it made sense: these weren't scientists (except for the one android, and he's not an idiot, he's following orders), these were truckers in space who were being sent to investigate an SOS and a REMOTE possibly of making first contact with extraterrestrial life. They went in with the mindset of ordinary people upholding a clause in their contract, and naturally their curiosity got the better of them when they found the ship. Ash was the only scientist on board, and even with company orders, you could argue that he was acting like a proper scientist once they got Kane to the sick bay. He wanted to save Kane (or at least acted like he did), wanted to figure out what the facehugger was doing, and he proceeded with caution, only taking action to remove the parasite once the captain pushed him to.

With Prometheus, any intelligent thought, logic, likability, and caution gets thrown out the window. These alleged scientists SHOULD have the discipline to proceed with caution and delicacy in any scientific endeavor, and SHOULD know to take things slowly, especially now that they're plunging into uncharted territory and discovering something completely new. But no. At first sign of an alien craft, they just dive right in like a bunch of lemmings. Right to their doom.

And you know what? This stupidity wasn't even necessary. They could have been smarter about this and still ended up roughly in the same place, if the movie had slowed down a bit or shown the passage of time via montage or cross fade transitions. We could have seen these guys examining and experimenting with their discoveries the way scientists would, going back and forth between Earth and the alien planet to study their finds back on Earth and/or bring more equipment with them, and still come up with ways to justify all this horrible stuff happening to all of them.

Ugh. This was just... wow. This does not warrant sequels. This isn't even worthy of being canon with the other films. It's just a dumb b-flick disguised as an Alien spin-off.

Been awhile since anyone posted in this thread. Figured I'd drop a line and ask if anyone will be going to see Alien Covenant. Personally I can't wait, but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check because of the hype. Either way, it's a nice feeling to look forward to another Alien movie.

I'm... interested, but only cautiously optimistic. Prometheus was a massive let-down for me, but Ridley has done some great work since then and I'm hopeful he can turn this around. That said, the trailer is showing some really terrible CG used to render the xenomorph when he's on the outside of the ship. Allegedly the xenomorph is going to be practical most of the time its onscreen, and I hope that's true if that THING is what the digital animators are turning in for the finished product.

I don't know why it's played out this way but I really liked Prometheus while noticing most others did not. I felt like it was a bit scattered in terms of direction, but it was entertaining nevertheless. The small bits of faith and religion that were there felt kinda unnecessary and shoehorned in there (I wonder if Scott is a religious guy) but for the most part I enjoyed the film overall. I'd gladly watch another film that centered around the engineers.

I went to go and see Alien: Covenant at the cinema today.
I thought it was good - not great - but good none-the-less. However (Without spoiling anything) I felt the ending was a little bit dark and ended with a cliffhanger, suggesting that Scott plans to make another film continuing on from the eventsfrom this one (Alien Covenant takes place in the year 2104, 18 years before the events of Alien (1979)).

Overall I would give it a 7.5 out of 10. Aliensnarl
I love the B-Movies from the 50's, 60's and 70's. topper
