In 2001 Toho released Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah-Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. Directed by Shusuke Kaneko, who also directed the Gamera Trilogy films, "GMK" returns Godzilla to his bad side, as a monster possessed by the spirits of the war dead(WWII). Defending Japan against Godzilla are three guardian monsters: Baragon, Mothra, and the 1000 Year Dragon, KIng Ghidorah. --This movie is IMO the best of the Millenium Godzilla films. Post your thoughts, impressions, and opinions of this film here. :)

Very well done! Love the music, the effects are great, and Goji just looks completely badass without pupils!

I thought the special effects overall were great, especially the explosions and pyrotechnics works during the final battle, much like the Gamera trilogy films. No coincidence either. Shusuke Kaneko directed all of these films and he and his team were the difference in making some terrific films.

I know. :P The pyrotechnics of the Heisei Shelly movies was awesome, as is here. When Ghiddy blows up, it's just awesome (and the explosion is purple-ish!)

GMK is my all-time favorite Godzilla movie. It actually made me HATE Godzilla. He was so evil in this film I couldn't wait for Mothra and Ghidorah to start attacking his ass. Plus the fights were a welcome return to the Showa style. More tooth-and-claw, less laser beams. Baragon's appearance--although brief--stole the show.

This is one of only two real criticisms I had for what I consider to be an otherwise stellar Godzilla film, IMO the best of the Millenium Series. While Godzilla was correctly rendered as an all-powerful, malevolent, rampaging juggernaut, the other monsters were not, IMO, portrayed strongly enough. Their renderings left me immediately wondering if they had, individually, or as a group, any real chance of stopping Godzilla, especially Baragon. A brave and fierce monster to be sure, and about half the size of Godzilla-this and, lacking any power or ability(an oral ray of it's own?), doomed this monster to be blasted into oblivion by G. While KG eventually morphs into it's adult form and presents Godzilla with a satisfying fight I was also somewhat disappointed that Mothra did not give Godzilla a harder time-not suggesting Mothra was a pushover-far from it. eyebrow

I would've really have loved to have seen Kaneko's original idea for the Guardian Monsters (Angilas, Baragon, & Varan). I think it would've worked better than de-powering Ghidorah and Mothra. It's too bad Toho wouldn't let Kaneko do his own movie. And, I fear after GFW's failure, no director will ever be given very much creative freedom on future Godzilla projects.

A mistake that I hope Toho doesn't make. In Packmule's opinion future Godzilla films with some creative input allowed=good chance we'll see some great G films again------future Godzilla films where Toho rules the director's chair with an "iron hand"=recipe for more cinema box-office failures confused

I love this film, I am blown away at how good it actually looks. I couldn't wait for the Region 1 release, so I got myself the Region 3 disc. I agree 100% with Ro-Dan's view of Godzilla being so evil in this, you were just waiting for the others to kick his behind. B)

Forgive me for being geographically challenged , but what areas are covered by Region 3? eyebrow

And in some respects I'm still waiting tongue-1 . My only complaint about this film was that the guardian monsters were not rendered as strong enough to seriously challenge Godzilla. There has been much dialogue about director Shusuke Kaneko's desire to portray Godzilla as a malevolent and all-powerful nightmare in this movie-he succeeded IMO, maybe a little too much. For me any Godzilla film where he fights other monsters has to include the possibility, however remote, that G can be defeated(or at least temporarily incapacitated) by the oppsing monster(s), and I didn't get that at all from this film. Even after KG transformed into Grand KG and began firing off fully charged gravity beams at Godzilla, I still had the overwhelming impression that G would win. For the record this is my favorite, and IMO best of the Millenium Godzilla films, and it is no coincidence that Kaneko was directing. He also directed the 90's Gamera trilogy films. I consider the '95 Gamera film to still be arguably the best Japanese giant monster movie ever made. bravo clap

That's very true. Too bad KG didn't give G a bigger challenge. BUT...Ghidorah, along with the help of mankind were able to end Godzilla's threat. ;)

Baragon's appearance--although brief--stole the show.

I also liked seeing Baragon back on the big screen, his last cinematic appearance a laughably brief shot in 1968's Destroy All Monsters. Baragon, though ultimately blasted into oblivion by Godzilla in this film, shows great courage and tenacity in his battle with Godzilla, a refreshing change from his previous on-screen appearances-recall that in 1965's Frankenstein Conquers The World he is unceremoniously jacked up by the 60 foot tall Franken-boy giant, and his shot in 1968's Destroy All Monsters is so brief as to make one wonder why he was even included in this film at all... confused

Yup! Baragon's tenacity give him a real lovable quality--much like the Showa era's Angilas.
