In 1968 Toho released Destroy All Monsters. The story: the year is 1999, and all of Earth's monsters now live in isolation on Ogasawara Island in a place called Monsterland: Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra(larva), Gorosaurus, Manda, Baragon, Varan, Minya, Kumonga, and Angilas. A race of aliens called the Killaak, in an effort to subjugate the Earth, loose the monster's upon all the major capital cities of the world, Tokyo being the last to be summarily demolished. Only the crew of the spaceship Moonlight SY-3 stand between humanity's salvation and monster annihilation! ---Post your opinions and impressions of this film here. :)

Meh. The only good part is the final battle.

Actually I liked the scene where the monsters converge on Tokyo, i.e. Godzilla, Rodan, Manda, and Mothra(larva). I also liked the scene where Yoshio Tsuchiya gets out of the chair, casually walks to the window, opens the shutter, and proceeds to jump to his death crazy . It was obviously a dummy tossed out a window-still funny to packmule

Eh, I'll give you the fact that seeing Manda was pretty cool, but overall, I didn't care too muach for the scene. ;) Needed the Goji vs Manda fight.

That scene was an outtake wasn't it? Or maybe an unused scene?

Yeah, it was a cut scene. Would have liked to see it.

If they still kept that scene it would of been bad, because they said they cut it because Manda stood no chance against Godzilla. Overa;;. I enjoyed this movie, it was good, i liked the fight scenes the best though.

I think this film is fun, the attack on the city was well done and the monsters looked great, wish the final battle was longer but it kicked tail.

The Special Effects are great and a work of art in this one.

Its a bit to slow, wish they made it faster but Im fine with it.

I was able to catch that deleted scene of Godzilla and Manda on youtube somewhere. It had no audio but you see Manda wrapping around a bridge and then Godzilla advances on him and grabs his head. The film cut after that. I dont know if there was any more footage than that filmed or not.

I also think some of the talking scenes in the first third of the movie were somewhat cumbersome. My main disappointment with Destroy All Monsters(1968) has always been, primarily, the abbreviated appearances of Baragon and Varan. The suits for both these monsters had deteriorated to the point that they were both deemed unusable during the making of this film. A shame really.
I hope, sooner than later, that somebody releases an upgraded R1 DVD of this film. The ADV Films R1 release has no features and no extras and uses the "international" English dub. I have always preferred the AIP dub featuring the deep, rich voice of Norman Rose. A 2-disc R1 DVD release of this film in it's orignal version(with English subs), the AIP version, and lots of extras would be marvelous. noddy

I used to have, on VHS, a collection of outtakes and unused footage from Toho sci-fi and kaiju films. I've also seen the footage of Godzilla skirmishing with Manda. I believe Toho was correct to leave it out of DAM.

Yeah. Like some have said it would not have made sense considering all the kaiju were under control. It would make no sense for them to start fighting.

About the Baragon suit, it is a shame, however that consequence did allow Gorosaurus to shine in his place.

Indeed. After Godzilla Gorosaurus, I thought, did the best job of having Godzilla's back in the final battle with KG. I also think that "Goro's" eruption out of the ground under the Arc De Triomphe in Paris(France) is an iconic scene in all of Toho's kaiju films. I know when I hear the words "Destroy All Monsters" I usually think of that scene and the AIP trailer graphics in which "DAM" is displayed vertically, top to bottom of the television screen with shots of the monsters in the background. thumbs up

I'll be watching this film again soon as it is next on my "Godzilla marathon." It's been a couple years so I'm pretty excited to see this again. I'm hoping, soon, however that there is another R1 legit release of this film that includes menus, chapter stops, and maybe a couple special features. Is that too much to ask? heyo

Indeed, since the ADV Films R1 has none of these. tongue-1

Absolutely not. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see somebody(Mediablaster's "Tokyo Shock" or Classic Media) pick up the rights to this film in the next couple of years and put out a disc with all the things you mentioned. :)

I like what Tokyo Shock did for Frankenstein Conquers the World. If they can simulate this sort of treatment for DAM it would be a nice little DVD set. I'd then be more than willing to pass my ADV copy down to a younger relative. Mr Green

I don't know why the re-release of, DAM was even done, it only included the soundtrack CD, didn't it and the DVD release was the exact same as the earlier release. I'd be thrilled if all future DVD releases of any kind were given the star treatment that, Frankenstein Conquers the World was given. thumbs up

Actually the CD addition was, according to ADV Films, why they released DAM again. I agree with you that that hardly seems like a reason to re-release it.
I have the ADV Films DVD(with CD soundtrack) of Destroy All Monsters(1968), as well as a DVD-R(subtitled, in 5.0 audio and letterboxed), and I also have a DVD-R, "burned" by member Travigodzillafan@aol.com from the Yahoo Godzilla forum, the disc he mailed me(as part of an exchange) the widescreen AIP dub(and not ADV's international dub). While I'm content with my versions of this classic I would be mighty pleased to see Mediablasters or Classic Media pick this one up and give it the "star" treatment. noddy

Did ADV ever issue a statement or reason regarding why they didn't even include a menu screen or chapter stops for the film? I felt kinda ripped off with this DVD not even including chapter stops, which I believe at a bare minimum every DVD should have. It doesnt seem like it would have required much effort to program these stops into the disc for production. I heard rumors that Toho "didn't let them" include anything but the bare film but this didnt really make any sense to me.

I could find no actual explanation posted on the internet as to why ADV Films would release, twice in fact, such poor DVDs of Destroy All Monsters(1968). In a DVD review, and a good one, written by Anthony Romero, Toho Kingdom's site founder, he mentions that ADV Films is not known for good DVD releases. I can't really comment on that as I'm not very familiar with the ADV Films DVD library-I do have some other ADV Films DVDs, like two "Yokai War" discs, Gunhed(1989), and The Princess Blade.
Here's the link to Anthony Romero's DVD review of ADV Films DAM 2-disc SE:

I watched this film again last night. It is as good as I remember it, I had always enjoyed this one in the past. I still laugh hard every time I watch this, at the fact that during the Final battle with Ghidorah, Godzilla, Anguirus, Gorosaurus and Rodan are all trying to fight but Minya is standing around dancing and making gestures. Then after Ghidorah is down he decides to blow a smoke ring around one of his heads. This has always been ridiculously hilarious to me every time I watch this film.

Did you purchase this film on DVD-R or what is the ADV Films R1 release? I keep thinking you told me you bought this movie on DVD-R but my memory(as usual tongue-1 ) is a little hazy here about this.

No I didnt get this one on DVD-R, I just have the crummy ADV release. I may get a better version DVD-R of this sometime, but for now I am content with waiting for awhile and hoping a legit version, with widescreen and tons of special features, is eventually released.

The consensus right now, Josh, is that as long as ADV holds the U.S. rights to this film there will not be another DVD released of this film on R1. Hopefully, when ADV's rights expire(whenever that may be) perhaps Mediablasters or Sony will step in and purchase the rights to DAM for a quality R1 DVD release.
