Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here. For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju). -Lee "Packmule" Merritt site founder |

I can understand your preference here. I may be wrong but I believe I saw somewhere recently(at another message board) that ADV Film's rights to DAM are going to expire in the not too distant future. When that happens I'm hoping Mediablasters will move to pay for the rights for this film in order to produce a quality R1 DVD with lots of extras. |

I watched my DVD-R of the AIP version of Destroy All Monsters(1968) last night, the aspect ratio(I'm guessing) 1:78.1(or 1:66.1) and the print VHS quality. One of the more endearing things to me about the AIP version is the smooth, easy on the ears narration of Norman Rose, at the beginning of the film. In the ADV Films release the narrator's voice is higher pitched and slightly nasal, which I find somewhat annoying. |

The dubing is overall easier to listen to on the AIP version. I'm not sure why ADV wanted to re-dub the movie. |

The fact that ADV Films chose to use the "International" English dub is briefly touched on at Wikipedia:

to be honest, this movie is also a little boreing. the only fun is looking at monsters. and the movie is plauged with dialouge. not bad, but they could come out with a region 1 DVD with scene selection, and a menu! |

Which is obviously the main criticism of the ADV Films Region 1 DVD release of this film: no extras of any kind. The North American rights to DAM will expire at some point(not sure when) and hopefully Sony or Mediablasters will buy those rights and release a quality DVD of this movie, including the very good AIP English dubbed audio, which includes the opening narration by Norman Rose.

So, Evan you find DAM boring. I believe the same could be said for many of the sequences in GFW. At least DAM doesn't include effects ripoffs from other films like GFW's wannabe "Matrix" effects.

^Obviously our conceptions on the two films at hand differ quite considerably. While I can't say much, I will say that atleast the human characters and monster fights in GFW were more interesting and epic (respectively) than those of DAM. |

You would rate the "soccer" style fight between King Seesar, Godzilla, Rodan and Anguirus as "epic"?

Does that include the brief, twenty second battle between Zilla and Godzilla? Or the even more truncated skirmish in which Godzilla grabs one of Kumonga's silk strands and hurls the spider into the distance? Evan, if you classify these two monster fights as "epic" then you must be on something.

The Zilla vs. Godzilla thing was epic just because Zilla got his ass kicked. Though you do have a point about the Kumonga fight. But it is still better than what DAM had... |

Zilla getting quickly obliterated by Godzilla was satisfying to some degree to watch for me. It was also IMO a very predictable sequence. You're saying that you believe the brief Godzilla vs Kumonga sequence in GFW was better choreographed than the final battle between KG and Earth's monsters in DAM? if you are then here's my reaction:

Not the final battle, but just Kumonga's part in general. Nothing with the coeography, but rather just the amount of stuff he did. All he did was look good and spray silk. Atleast in this film we see some melee come from him, even though it is just some red neck's trailer... |

I love Destroy All Monsters,I've always thought it was one of the more popular Godzilla films,so I was a little surprised to find a lot of folks on here don't seem to rate it. For a Kaiju fan I think it's hard to beat having so many monsters in one film and it's just tremendous fun, with appearances from Godzila and others every ten minutes or so,and a fair bit of action with aliens and guns when the monsters are not on screen. I reckon it's the fastest and most action packed Godzilla film of the 60s. The plot is basically Monster Zero again [and it would be used again] although the aliens don't bother pretending to be friendly here, they just attack immediately,in fact the film reminds me of the monsterless Battle In Outer Space in feel and pace, especially when the humans go to the moon. The humans are sadly pretty uninteresting but that's often the case with the more action orientated series entries, there's little time for character quirks or developement. The aliens are not that great either to be honest, but there's little time to think about that and there are some cool, crazy concepts in the movie, such as Monster Island. I like the fact that it's a real global crisis too. Technically this movie returns to the quality of Monster Zero-the effects, which are very numerous in number, are pretty good, and most of the monsters look fine to me although the odd suit looks like it could have done with repairing [such as Ghidorah's!]. It's a bit of a shame that some monsters are given such short shrift-the first version I saw was full screen and Varan's brief appearance was off screen! There's a solid destruction sequence [how I love them!] and I still think the battle between Ghidorah and the other monsters is well staged even though a few monsters do hardly anything. I love the bit before where the commentator talks about the monsters attacking-one of those crazy things you'll only ever find in a Godzilla film. Another scene which makes me laugh is when the astronauts are cutting the control device on the moon-it goes on forever with a funny music cue too. I like the tone of this film-it's rather like that of Mothra Vs Godzilla, not too serious but not too silly either. With one of Akira Ikifube's best Kaiju scores,I think it's a great entry that was the last really good Godzilla film [as enjoyable as they all are] for quite a while. It demands a decent DVD release in the West [I got the Australian one again!] Edited by Jonzilla, Oct 22 2009, 01:54 AM.

One of the few gripes I have about Destroy All Monsters is that Kumonga and larval Mothra aren't shown more active, that is, moving around a bit, during the film's climactic kaiju battle. Rodan also doesn't appear very active in the fianl fight versus KG. The fact they are included, albeit in brief shots in which both fire their silk at KG, is better IMO than no participation at all in the final battle. Also disappointing to me and other fans of DAM is the lack of screen time for the monsters Baragon and Varan. From what I have read in books on these films both suits for these monsters were in bad shape by 1968 and were deemed unusable by Toho for anything more than very brief shots. |
