In 1969 Toho released Godzilla's Revenge. The story: a kid named Ichiro is having it tough, what with bullies from school and parents that are never at home. And now a pair of bank robbers are after him. Ichiro uses his imagination to "escape" to MonsterIsland, where he, along with Minya, witness Godzilla fighting the other monsters of the island, Kamikiras, Kumonga, and finally a new monster, Gabara. Ichiro watches as Godzilla trains Minya to fight, and soon Ichiro is turning the tables on those two bad-guy bank robbers! ---Post your opinions and impressions of this film here. :)

If I'm not mistaken this film was made as Toho was on shaky financial ground, which no doubt played a factor in the heavy use of stock footage. Also, Destroy All Monsters, which preceded it, is kind of a hard act to follow. The 1969 film is, along with Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973), my two least favorite movies in the Godzilla film archives. :ph43r:

The film is not that bad if you watched it the way I did.
I watched it before I saw any of the films that were stocked into it, so it turned out better for me than most people I guess.

I also watched it for the first time at a young age, so that helps too.

All in all, I thought it was a decent film the first time I saw it, but after I saw all of the others... <_<

No doubt I think this film might be more appealing for kids. :)

I used to like it for it's effort of making a decent story but it's gone down in my opinion. Its just too sloppy and doesn't feel like a movie to me...

It's all stock footage. And what's not stock footage is a dopey kid in an imaginary world with a talking Minya and a bully-monster named Gabara. Not my cup of tea. What a let down after DESTROY ALL MONSTERS?

I have considered the possibility that Toho simply pushed a low budget film out the door just to have a G film "out there"-I say this because they cranked out one Godzilla film a year from 1964-68. I believe Toho's financial struggles were one reason for the heavy use of stock footage, and that, compounded by the fact this film was released after a big budget(by Toho's standards) movie like DAM=generally unpopular and not-to-well received movie.

I don't hate this film and I try very hard to like it, but it falls into that area of films that I apperciate more than anything else. I appreciate the fact that Toho was trying to make another film for Godzilla fans to enjoy, but I think there for a while, there was far too much emphasis on adding 'cute' kids to the mix and I'm not a child-hater in any sense of the word, but I think making a child the main focus in a film such as this or some of the Gamera films made the stories too juvenile.....perhaps if Toho wanted to bring a much younger fan base into the fold, they could have made a sub-genre of films geared just towards the kids and concnetrated on more adult themes for the adult fan-base of Godzilla. Hmmm...by adult themes, I don't mean sexual themes, but a bit more intense scenes of violence or sci-fi, soemthing that might frighten the younger ones. :D

According to a pair of extremely detailed books I have on Godzilla, the reason Godzilla's Revenge was such a "child-intensive" movie was due, in large part, to competition from Daiei, who was producing the Gamera films, themselves now focusing more on children with 1968's Destroy All Planets.

While IMO the worst Godzilla film, it is better then GINO and is more fun, Gabara is alright, Minya does get annoying but is still ok, Godzilla looks good and gives Gabara a beating of a life-time.

Yeah so its fun to watch, unlike GINO.

very funny

I'd say Gabara deserved it after the way he roughed up Minya. tongue-1

I like all Godzilla movies, but Godzilla's Revenge(1969) ranks at the bottom as far as how I would rank them regarding how much I like them. I always try to derive as many positives from each "Godzilla" movie as I can-repeated viewing are often necessary in order for me to do this. :)

I'm curious gojiramatthew: would you rate this movie better overall than 1973's Godzilla Vs Megalon?

Okay. thumbs up

Even though I own the Simitar DVD of Godzilla's Revenge(1969) I will probably buy the Classic Media re-release in early September. Hopefully the CM re-release will have a lot more extras than the Simitar disc(which is a good disc). :)

Godzila revenge for what

I'm not sure there was any "revenge" being sought by Godzilla in this film, batrus. The original(Toho) title of this movie is All Monsters Attack(1969), a title I think is more in line with the many monsters we see Godzilla fight again: Kumonga, Spiega, the Kamikiras(the giant mantises) and Ebirah(the giant crustacean). If memory serves me correct Godzilla's Revenge is the American(or international ?) title for this film. :)

It seems to me that they titled this movie Godzillas Revenge in the states just so it would be more recognizable, and in the process the title deviates somewhat from the theme of the actual film. They probably should have titled this movie "Destroy All bullies" or "Minya Strikes back" or something.

Or "Godzilla vs. Nightmare Monster", "Godzilla vs. the Ogre" or "Minya vs. Gabara: Dream Monster Battle".

Or something. I have yet to watch the actual movie, though.

I'm inclined to agree with you here. A movie called Godzilla's Revenge would certainly, I would think, have had more appeal to it's American distributor(AIP? I'm not sure) than All Monsters Attack, simply because the word "Godzilla" is recognizable to many people.

Okay. On the subject of possible alternate titles for Godzilla's Revenge(1969) here are a few, Kex, for your inspection:

Minya vs Gabara: Electric Dreams

Godzilla & Minya: Father Knows Best

All Bullies Attack: Revenge Of Minya

I don't like yours. Something about them, I don't know. They're either too modern or too western. :(

For me like most Godzilla fans this film isn't my all time favorite. It does have its points. I really liked Gabara and wished he would have been brought back in Later movies. I found this on the Kaija Fan site. After reading this I started to think about this movie more some things really made more sense.

I read the linked article and, beside believing it to be a very good read, I also agree with the vast majority of it as well. It's easy to slam Godzilla's Revenge(1969) because of the abundance of stock footage and the plot, which is a far cry from many of the more action-oriented and epic storylines in previous Showa Godzilla films. This movie has grown on me over the years, no doubt about it. It will never be a favorite but it is a movie I have come to appreciate, and respect, much more now than in years past. :)

I agree packmule
When I first saw this movie it was in the theaters. It was a double with War of the Gargantua's. I have to say I liked and still do like Gargantua's better .
So I have always have not liked GR that much . But as years go on I've come to like it a bit more . Now after reading that artical I have a whole new way of looking at this movie. Granted it wont ever be in my top 10 Godzilla films but I will look at it differently
