In 1969 Toho released Godzilla's Revenge. The story: a kid named Ichiro is having it tough, what with bullies from school and parents that are never at home. And now a pair of bank robbers are after him. Ichiro uses his imagination to "escape" to MonsterIsland, where he, along with Minya, witness Godzilla fighting the other monsters of the island, Kamikiras, Kumonga, and finally a new monster, Gabara. Ichiro watches as Godzilla trains Minya to fight, and soon Ichiro is turning the tables on those two bad-guy bank robbers! ---Post your opinions and impressions of this film here. :)

If I'm not mistaken this film was made as Toho was on shaky financial ground, which no doubt played a factor in the heavy use of stock footage. Also, Destroy All Monsters, which preceded it, is kind of a hard act to follow. The 1969 film is, along with Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973), my two least favorite movies in the Godzilla film archives. :ph43r:

The film is not that bad if you watched it the way I did.
I watched it before I saw any of the films that were stocked into it, so it turned out better for me than most people I guess.

I also watched it for the first time at a young age, so that helps too.

All in all, I thought it was a decent film the first time I saw it, but after I saw all of the others... <_<

No doubt I think this film might be more appealing for kids. :)

I used to like it for it's effort of making a decent story but it's gone down in my opinion. Its just too sloppy and doesn't feel like a movie to me...

It's all stock footage. And what's not stock footage is a dopey kid in an imaginary world with a talking Minya and a bully-monster named Gabara. Not my cup of tea. What a let down after DESTROY ALL MONSTERS?

I have considered the possibility that Toho simply pushed a low budget film out the door just to have a G film "out there"-I say this because they cranked out one Godzilla film a year from 1964-68. I believe Toho's financial struggles were one reason for the heavy use of stock footage, and that, compounded by the fact this film was released after a big budget(by Toho's standards) movie like DAM=generally unpopular and not-to-well received movie.

I don't hate this film and I try very hard to like it, but it falls into that area of films that I apperciate more than anything else. I appreciate the fact that Toho was trying to make another film for Godzilla fans to enjoy, but I think there for a while, there was far too much emphasis on adding 'cute' kids to the mix and I'm not a child-hater in any sense of the word, but I think making a child the main focus in a film such as this or some of the Gamera films made the stories too juvenile.....perhaps if Toho wanted to bring a much younger fan base into the fold, they could have made a sub-genre of films geared just towards the kids and concnetrated on more adult themes for the adult fan-base of Godzilla. Hmmm...by adult themes, I don't mean sexual themes, but a bit more intense scenes of violence or sci-fi, soemthing that might frighten the younger ones. :D

According to a pair of extremely detailed books I have on Godzilla, the reason Godzilla's Revenge was such a "child-intensive" movie was due, in large part, to competition from Daiei, who was producing the Gamera films, themselves now focusing more on children with 1968's Destroy All Planets.

While IMO the worst Godzilla film, it is better then GINO and is more fun, Gabara is alright, Minya does get annoying but is still ok, Godzilla looks good and gives Gabara a beating of a life-time.

Yeah so its fun to watch, unlike GINO.
