Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju). -Lee "Packmule" Merritt site founder |

I was breezing through Godzilla reviews, and one die hard fan commented on how The Return of Godzilla(1984) started a revolution, and returned Godzilla to his Evil Roots, as he was intended. (I take minor opposition with the writer, as I found the Heisei Godzilla to be more of a force of nature than intrinsically 'Evil.' But that's a small nit pick and misconception) And while Godzilla was originally a Metaphor for the Atomic Bombings, a literal manifestation, I find it fascinating that Ishiro Honda would also Direct the most 'Childish' of Godzilla films, Godzilla's Revenge. I haven't seen the film in years, but I don't think it was the worst Godzilla film. (Actual Contenders for that include, for me at least: Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla vs Mothra Battle for Earth, Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla and Godzilla vs Megaguirus) Even the worst of these films have stuff to admire. Anyway, that isn't the point I am trying to get across. Look at Destroy all Monsters, and Terror of Mechagodzilla. It's one of the reasons I believe Godzilla to be my favorite movie character. Not just his trans-formative nature and appearance. (Ever Evolving) But because I think Honda understood that this character was expendable to other genres. And while I still prefer my 'Darker' Godzilla, I still remember that as a whole, that isn't what Godzilla is all about. He can be an antagonist, protagonist, side character in his own movie, Friend, Hero, Destroyer, Force of Nature, Metaphor, Environmentalist. And Fans who choose to ignore these facets of his personality, are limiting themselves from some great storytelling. Cause while I want another morbid romp through the city, it would get old after a while. The Original creators (Honda, Tanaka, Ifukube, Tsuburaya) understood this, and it's why I have come to accept the sillier side of Godzilla. And because of this acceptance in full, I have come to a slightly better, and less ignorant understanding of Godzilla as a whole. |

Having seen Godzilla's Revenge(1969) many times my opinion of this film, which used to be fairly harsh, has "mellowed" over the years. Like you, Kaleb I have tried to keep an open mind watching Godzilla movies with the understanding that the monster will not always be presented, as I prefer him to be, as a lumbering, unstoppable menace and threat to humanity. In fact, and over the decades, I have come to actually like Godzilla being presented as the "anti hero": he's no friend to humanity but he's also no friend to other monsters and will fight/kill them as a natural instinct, an action which of course benefits humanity. |
