In 1951 20th Century Fox released The Day The Earth Stood Still. The story: a spaceship enters Earth's atmospshere, landing in a Washington, D.C. park. The human-like alien emissary Klaatu(played by Michael Rennie) at first refuses to reveal his reason for being here to anyone, save one scientist. Soon his reason is revealed...For me this film is a timeless classic in the archive of science fiction cinema. Post your take of this film here.

One of my all-time favorite films, to be sure. It's fantastic in every regard. I love the strong message it carries. Some people have said it's too preachy, but I think the execution is perfect. Try to be subtle with a message like that and it'll be lost on the audience. Put aside our differences...simple, but very vital and obviously not thought about too much by most people. I also found the Christian parallels quite intriguing. An all-around great movie, with wonderful acting, a brilliant score, and some cool effects to boot. Gotta love it.

I particularly enjoyed the continually menacing presence of Gort, and also the great score.

Yeah, Lee, the score is great. I've always liked the Day The Earth Stood Still when I was growing up. Now I find I love it. Gort, Klaatu, Hermann's score, the 50's Cold War atmosphere...good stuff.

Yeah, Lee, the score is great.  I've always liked the Day The Earth Stood Still when I was growing up.  Now I find I love it.  Gort, Klaatu, Hermann's score, the 50's Cold War atmosphere...good stuff.

The score for this movie is so good that it was used(again) in the pilot episode of Lost In Space(on CBS) in 1965, fourteen year later.

It popped up again in a later Lost In Space episode that guest-starred Michael Rennie, appropriately enough.

Not to expensive. The store is closing, so everything is 75% off. I paid 45 dollars.

Since seeing that Keanu Reeves was chosen to play Klaatu in the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still(1951), I've been, admittedly, a little concerned. I think Reeves has grown as an actor, to some degree, since films like Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure and Point break. Still, I wonder if he can pull off the role. I've also been curious as to how he'll look as the interplanetary emissary.

Ken Hulsey at RoboJapan has posted an advance teaser poster(image) for the remake of 1951's The Day The Earth Stood Still, the remake of the same name and scheduled for theatrical release in December, 2008:
