In 1969 Universal released Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun. The story: some one hundred years in the future, scientists discover another "Earth" on the other side of the Sun, kind of a "reflection" of our own planet. Curious to know what this parallel world is like, all of the Western nations on Earth set up a space exploration team headed by two astronauts(played by Roy Thinnes and Ian Hendry), to visit the new planet. The astronauts blast off into space and things go according to plan, at first. A premature crash landing by their spacecraft leads the pair of astronauts to wonder where they are: on Earth? Or on the mysterious mirror image world? ---In my opinion an interesting, thought provoking film. Not terribly exciting to watch and with standard visuals-the strength of this film lies in it's story. Post your opinions, thoughts, and reviews of this film here.

The first time I ever saw this film I thought that it was very similar to Space: 1999 and was pleasantly surprised to see it was a Gerry/Sylvia Anderson production. As a fan of both, Space: 1999 and the 'Supermarionation' series from the Andersons, I thought this film had some definite moments of interest, but did bog down from time to time. An interesting story with a great cast, I thought the ending was pretty decent, too.

I enjoy this film every time I put it in the DVD player. It does get a little tedious at times. This film not only reminds me of Space:1999 but also of UFO.

UFO feel from the Anderson's, as well. In fact, I believe Ed Bishop and some other UFO aulmni had starring roles in, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun.

Yes, UFO has been released to DVD. I was able to pick up both collcetions, last year from Hamiltoonbook.com for only about $40 for both sets! I believe most of the time they go for about $40/collection, so great deal. I wasn't a big fan of, UFO the first time I saw the series back when the Sci-Fi Channel used to show it, but decided to give the series another chance and I very much enjoy the series, now.

I also like the intro theme music for UFO. Very catchy. :D

Agreed. :D I think the Andersons really paid attention to what might have been small details to some, but their opening/closing themes were always excellent and the special effects to their series were all top notch.

What is your impression of the ending to Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun? For me the ending seemed kind of ambiguous. confused

Click the link to read an excellent review of Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun(1969), which includes some comments on the recent re-release of this film to DVD: http://www.dvddrive-in.com/reviews/i-m/journeyfarsidesun69.htm

Despite the DVD re-release not having any extras I like the fact the reviewer says the print looks much cleaner, reason enough for me to buy this re-release, despite owning the R1 disc of this movie released back in 1998. winky

When I found out this disc wasn't adding any special features, I thought, well, I'll simply stick with the original release. THEN, I had to read that the print looked better, so now I am thinking of double-dipping on this. Have you gotten the newest release, Lee or not yet? I'm curious to see if you see a definite improvement with this re-release? huh?

I'm going to look for it at Best Buy this Saturday...along with the TV series UFO(on DVD). mildsmile

Thread drift: I found The Deadly Bees and The Man Who Could Cheat Death on DVD: they were in a display, separate from the others DVD sections, the sign on the display reading "Best Buy Exclusives". winky

I didn't care for the UFO series, the first time I saw it.....then I got both sets of the series and really enjoyed it. Guess as a kid, I expected more from the series, but really appreciate it, now.

Glad to hear you were able to find both films.....! I swear, it's like Best Buy is doing their damnedest to not have these exclusives sell! shifty eyes
