Godzilla Raids Again(1955) - Revisited Having some extra time on my hands this AM I sat down and watched Godzilla Raids Again(1955) without interruption and without falling asleep on the couch(which I'm prone to do). Observations: -I've always liked the score for this film, which is a nice blend of strings and horns, gritty and dark at times, more earnest at others. I particularly liked the dark tones during the Godzilla Vs Anguirus battle in Osaka -speaking of the main monster battle, Godzilla and Anguirus go after each other in earnest, much to the chagrin of the locals and the Kaiyo Fishing Company owner, whose property, along with the rest of the city, is completely demolished by the rampaging monsters. I thought the monster battle had great shots, despite my disdain that it appeared at times, IMO, too fast, due to the lack of abundant use of high speed filming. -Kobayashi is an affable guy, a borderline goofball at times, but make no mistake this man had guts and the heart of a lion in flying at Godzilla in his plane. His death was sad but I thought his heroism and sacrifice was inspiring. -I found it interesting that the Air Squadron Commander, played by Yoshio Tsuchiya, continued wearing his tie even as he was in the cockpit of his jet. -though there are flaws in the special effects(some visible wires on the jets) and some background renderings(especially several water tank shots) that left something to be desired, I thought the miniatures were pretty good and the overall special effects were great, considering the year this movie was produced. |

The Original had flaws as well then again all Godzilla films have problems with Special effects. For a film rushed it, the effects are pretty amazing. I actually like the fast speed battle, while a bit too fast, I liked how it showed more energy to Godzilla and Anguirus. |

I agree about the fast battle scenes, they were a bit fast but added a sense of primal ferociousness to the monsters which kind of redeemed it. |

While I agree with you here, Josh I have also always believed that the frenetic pace of the battle took away from a sense of realism, one reason why I like Mothra Vs Godzilla(1964) so much: the use of high speed filming, which makes the actions of the monsters look more realistic. The actions of two 50 meter tall monsters weighing thousands of tons each are not, IMO, going to look like what I saw in the kaiju battles(the regular speed film sequences anyway) in GRA. Just my opinion. Seeing as this is a film "gojiramatthew" likes a lot I'm sure he will offer a rebuttal to this post.

I can understand your point, but I must add in that I dont see any sense of realism in the fight between Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), my reason for saying this: I dont see how a Moth can drag a monster like Godzilla while only holding his tail, I dont see how Mothra can have enough strengh to move Godzilla across the ground at a fast speed, I truthfully dont see how a Moth can drag a Mutated Dinosaur that should weigh thousands of tons across the ground that fast, thats why IMO I dont see realism in the fight. If you want to hear me say one thing I really liked in MvsG (1964), I can say that the scene when Godzilla comes out of the ground and shakes off the dirt is a wonderful scene. |

Actually I was hoping you might say at least two things you liked about MvsG but since you've already mentioned one thing you liked that would be alright...for now anyway. The scene, where Mothra drags Godzilla across the ground, was partly filmed in high speed and partly not. The part where their movements are slower is the high speed filming part, obviously. As for Mothra's strength, it seems plausible to me that the giant moth could drag Godzilla. If Mothra's wings can generate hurricane force winds(in the 200-250 MPH range), which they can and do, then why wouldn't they be capable of providing Mothra with tremendous upward "lift" power. If anything what I was most skeptical of was Mothra's small legs, which looked too small for strong grasping capability. |

WOO Hoo I received the Godzilla Collection for Christmas I watched GRA last night I dont know if I really did ever see this movie I dont remember any of it. I agree with packmule about the monster fights being too fast. what was really strange to me was the way Godzilla roared .Sometimes it was the classic roar but most of the time it was Anguirus's roar. I also noticed that Godzilla's atomic breath was done in two different ways first like the original movie (fire extinguisher ) and also drawn on the film. I think TOHO did a good job in a short time on this film In whole I thought the movie was pretty go |

What is the problem with the fights been quick?, its different from the rest of the Monster vs Monster fights we get in later films.
Hmm, sounds like the US version of GRA, the Japanese version is much better. |

Very glad to hear that! thumbs up Thank you. ![]() As Matthew mentioned, the American version of GRA included, I believe, more inconsistencies in the monsters roars. Bear in mind that this film was made in 1955...that's seven years before I was born...and that's really old. ![]() Agreed. There is no "problem", Matthew. It's simply a matter of preference. I have said on occasion that I believe the movements of two 50 meter tall(or long) creatures, weighing 20,000+ tons each, would, IMO, look much slower in reality than what we see during parts of the battle in GRA. I stand by that opinion, Matthew, but that does not mean I think the effects used in the kaiju battles in GRA are a "problem". You have said all Godzilla films have flaws and this, IMO, is one of the flaws in GRA. Nothing more. For the year it was made, and the time it was made in, I think GRA is a solid, entertaining "Godzilla" movie. |

While I agree with you that Anthony Romero's review is a little harsh I also know that he's an informed fellow, a real fan of all Godzilla movies and simply states his honest opinion on things. I'll be the first to admit, Matthew, that when I first started accessing the internet about three years ago, it was hard for me to read other people's negative words about movies I have long held in high regard. Like you said, the important thing is to always respect other's opinions...even if you don't agree with them. Not respecting the opinion of others remains, IMO, a chronic problem for many on the web. Fortunately, not for you or me and a whole lot of other people. :) |

I guess when it really comes down to it that it's all in the eye of the beholder. I've seen movies and video games that are beloved to me just completely trashed by other people in reviews or blogs. If anything, I'm at least interested to see why they hold that opinion. I think it can be interesting to read about why someone may like or dislike something. It can be almost like a window to their personality in a sense, because you can see what values they hold high, what means the most to them about the particular thing they are commenting on, and what interests or common thoughts on the subject you may have that match theirs. In this sense, I love reading reviews, even when they may bag on my favorite zombie and godzilla movies. tongue and cheek |

For some reason, and I don't know why, I just can't stop watching this movie. I've watched it every night for 2 weeks. It's a very gloomy movie with a real quiet and dark score by Masaru Sato. Nothing like his scores for Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs the Sea Monster and Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla. |

My guess: you like the movie a lot. Seriously, you and member gojiramatthew definitely have one thing in common, because he is a great fan of this movie as well. It's unfortunate GRA "flew under the radar" as long as it did, before Classic Media released it on R1 DVD. Better late than never, obviously. |

This wasn't a bad Godzilla film but not one of my favs....a big problem I felt is that what should have been a monster fight saved for the climax was in the middle of the film and everything after seems less thrilling as nothing after happens to top it....but I like how the fights were more animalistic then other Godzilla films......though the fast motion harmed the impact of those scenes. |

Some scenes where the camera was way too fast, I sometime imagine "Benny Hill" music in it's place. I like the fact that the opposing monster was taken care of and then the job of finishing off Godzilla was up to the humans |

It was a good film and I did like the fact this film introduced another popular monster Anguirus.....it's no secret that I quite like Anguirus...definitely one of my favourite monsters. Saying the fast motion is like Benny Hill.....that was a pretty good way to out it because things tend to look funnier that way...a comedic device also used by the Goodies.....in this film the fight looked hilarious and savage at the same time. |

Is it just me or did the Godzilla suit in this film look like his neck was way too thin?....it kinda makes his neck's proportions look off. Other then that I didn't made it as Godzilla's face looked one of the more aggressive looking Godzilla's of the Showa era |

Indeed. My biggest gripe with this film was the lack of high speed filming used for the monster battles. There was, to be sure, some use of this optical effect...just, IMO, not nearly enough of it. Also, for a film that, I think, should have had a "dark" feel like Gojira I found the score to be a little too upbeat at times. Other than that I've come to like the original(Toho) version of this film more as I've watched it a few more times. It's unfortunate that GRA was unavailable for so long on R1 DVD. |

I wasn't a perfect film nor one of the best such as the films pacing issues, poor judgments in editing, Godzilla's thin chicken neck and weak score....but all things considered in the fact it was a rushed cash-in sequel...I think it still was pretty good |

I still like the suit better that the Godzilla vs the Sea Monster Suit. Atleast Nakajima kept his arms close to his body instead of flailing them around like he's on a pair of rollerskates about to fall. But, I'm weird |

I'll agree that in this the Godzilla suit looked better then in Ebirah....but even then I think that suit looked better then in Son of Godzilla....which I think is Godzilla's ugliest suit to date...it eyes were horrid. The Raids Again suit might not be one of the best...but there are certainly worse suits to pick from...much worse |
