My only dislike about the Japanese version of this film is the lake of a music score. it's got a few good tracks, but through much of the film, you don't hear it.
thats cause of the suspence, like the momment in the original godzilla movie, the momment befor he strikes, that momment of complete silence. well the music in this film is slow, silent and down right cheesy and gives the feel of a classy way.

With this film, I wish that Anguirus got more screentime...

But Anguirus could have been used as an important plot device, like if Angy were to be used to help flesh out Goji's history in unexplored parts...

Or like in the TK toon, Angy and Goji could have joined forces since they both have the same cause.

I didnt find the score in this film isnt down right cheese, IMO its a dark, slow and quiet score, yeah... I know that's close to what you said, except for the down right cheesy part. winky

Also for those of you who couldn't hear the music that well in the film, here's a link to DaBears0685's account:

http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=DaBears0685&view=videos&start=60

Also I am planning to get the fighting scene from the film (Not all of the fighting however) and make the soundtrack a little bit easier to hear and I might edit the music Im going to use... I might add in an an echo or edit the pitch down effect or do some sort of background effect... I just have to see how it goes. topper

And to think you are talking about a score done by Masaru Sato. So, with that being the case, let's compare this film's score to this film's:

^Nice to hear. I do not know why some people do not like the score for G74. It was kick butt. Really gave the film some personal feeling.

I mean, it was such a brutal movie, the music reinforced that but also lightened it up, if that makes any sence...lol

Godzilla Raids Again? Love it. I was talking about Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla. Godzilla Bleeding everywhere and Anguirius bleeding and hurt. The Fights were brutal. But I still loved it.

I watched Godzilla Raids Again(1955) today, the R1 Classic Media DVD(original Toho version). A "revisit" is forthcoming(tomorrow). I also took the time to watch an extra on this disc called "The Art Of Suit Acting", done by Ed Godziszewski. "Ed G" did a great job with this feature! thumbz up

Double trouble: Godzilla Raids Again(1955) - Revisited

Over the past couple of months I have been going back and watching all the Godzilla movies in my DVD collection again, especially the older, "Showa" era titles. Lately I've felt a sense of detachment from these movies, a sensation I do not like, considering my lifelong fondness for kaiju films.

The most recent Godzilla movie I watched was Godzilla Raids Again, a quick sequel produced by Toho to capitalize on the unexpected, and tremendous financial success of 1954's Gojira.

Godzilla Raids Again was originally released theatrically in Japan back in April, 1955. The film is directed by Motoyoshi Oda, produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka with the score composed by Masaru Sato and special effects direction by Eiji Tsuburaya.

I watched the Classic Media R1 DVD of the movie, the original Toho version in Japanese language with English subtitles. Some personal observations,as always some positive and some negative:

Thumbs up:

1. the rendering of newcomer monster Anguirus: I like the overall design of the creature, an armored, four legged monster that charges like a bull at Godzilla and has a spiked tail. Anguirus gives an excellent accounting of itself in this film: plodding, aggressive and producing a menacing, almost Godzilla-like roar, Anguirus fights Godzilla hard and gives it's two legged rival a hell of a fight.

2. the tuna cannery pilot "Koji Kobayashi"(played by Minoru Chiaki): behind this fellow's laid back, almost bumbling facade was the heart and bravery of a lion. His sacrifice gives Tsukioka the idea of how to stop Godzilla, a tactic that is, subsequently employed by the Osaka defense forces, ultimately successful.

3. the primary battle between Godzilla and Anguirus in Osaka: I thought it was well choreographed overall, much of that due to Haruo Nakajima, the Godzilla suit actor and who also had a great deal of input on the monster battle choreography between himself and Katsumi Tezuka, who suited Anguirus. The two monsters lay waste to Osaka in devastating fashion, buildings and other structures demolished by the actions of the warring creatures.

4. the score: Sato's score lacks the power of 1954's Gojira but still strikes me as moody, at times a little dreary and almost always appropriate for the generally somber mood of this film

5. the tuna cannery employees' party at the restaurant: getting drunk and raising a little hell, both of which I can attest are often effective means by which to blow off some steam...though watching all these guys clap their hands while singing a ditty seemed a little of a stretch loco2

Thumbs down:

1. the lack of high speed filming for much of the Godzilla Vs Anguirus Osaka battle: as much as I like the choreography of the battle itself, I also equally dislike the battle appearing at times to be too fast, given the size of the two monsters in this movie

2. the use of puppets in certain shots(depicting Godzilla's head)

The American version of GRA, called Gigantis The Fire Monster, and distributed by Warner Brothers, opened in American theaters in May of 1959. George Takei, who later played "Lt. Sulu" on the 1966 NBC TV series Star Trek, voiced Hiroshi Koizumi's character "Tsukioka" in GRA. The American version of GRA appeared for a while on The Disney Channel(late 80s-early 90's).

I would recommend the Classic Media R1 DVD release, which presents both versions of this black and white film.

The trailer for the American version, called Gigantis The Fire Monster:

Nice review, Lee. It's been awhile, probably 6 months or longer since I've watched this film, and its one of the ones I've been itching to revisit. I'm thinking I'll view this and Son of Godzilla pretty soon.

Here's my review for GRA that I posted on Mothra's Universe. topper

GOJIRAMATTHEW'S GRA REVIEW

THE THINGS I LIKED ABOUT THE MOVIE:

The Godzilla Suit (While it does look far too skinny in some scenes, the overall suit is good and looks fierce)

The Anguirus Suit

The Score (Not as great as Akira Ifukube's work but Masaru Sato still did a good job with his quiet, dark score for this film)

The Characters (Not as good as the ones in the 1954 film and many other future G-films but better then the characters from films such as - Godzilla vs Megalon)

The Anguirus and Godzilla fight (While the fast speed makes it strange, the effect is interesting and its good to see two giant monsters fighting like real animals rather then doing Kong-Fu moves or wrestling)

The Climax (Not the best ending in a Godzilla Godzilla but still good enough and it's rather dark)

The Special Effects (Good for a film made in 1955, that was rushed)

THE THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE MOVIE:

The Pacing (It is IMO very slow)

The Godzilla toy been used for distance shots

The Godzilla puppets teeth

Thanks for reading, oh and I give GRA an 8/10. big grin thumbz up
