http://www.historyvortex.org/GodzillaSecondWorldWar.html - There is allegory in this film!

"I especially liked the article about Godzilla's Counterattack. It was quite an eye opener to see the symbolism of that movie. I have a new found respect for the film now. I had always thought the movie (although I enjoy it) seemed more like a hastily put together sequel to the first movie. " - member from KG

I like this film. I have always wanted to see the Japanese version of it and I will. I am sure it is scads better than the Americanized "Gigantis the Fire Monster" Film.

I like the cast of characters especially the character of Setsuko Wakayama's "Hidemi Yamaji", (who I know is kind of a background player... but I like the friends romantic interest in her and how that all ended tragically for Minoru Chiaki character "Kôji Kobayashi".

Course it still seems like I am a dozen films before I have all that I want (on DVD that is).
Though I am happy to announce I have just added H-Man, Battle in Outer Space and original Mothra (which was lost tragically in a VHS mishap) to my collection.
I still need to get Varan, WotG, FctW, Matango, Space Ameoba (Whichever one has the Squid, Turtle and Crab in it), Mysterians, Godzilla vs. Biollante and a DVD copy of DAM... OH and a DVD copy of G84.

Anyhow this is a fantastic movie. I almost wish that TOHO would put out addition with the battle sequences between Godzilla and Anguirus slowed down to simulate their massive size. But that is my only complaint about this film.

You're correct: the original Toho title is Space Amoeba(1970). It's international title is "Yog Monster From Space". The squid is called "Gezora", the crab is called "Ganime" and the huge turtle is referred to as "Kamebas".

I also wish the movements of the two warring monsters was presented slower in these sequences in GRA, which has been achieved through an effect called "high speed filming", which obviously wasn't always used much during the fight sequences between Godzilla and Anguirus. For me this is really my only real complaint about GRA. winky

Godzilla Raids Again is an above average Kaiju film. I think the American version is horrible but the Japanese is good. I liked seeing anguirus for the first time.

I only own Gigantis the Fire Monster... I have ALWAYS wanted to see the Japanese version and I will hopefully soon.
Is the story that different from the Gigantis one?
You won't spoil it for me.

Just a little FYI to owners of a Netflix subscription - "Gojira" and "Godzilla Raids Again" are currently available to watch instantly via streaming download on Netflix's website and are accessible by computer, video game console, or through a Netflix enabled DVD or Blu-Ray player.

I watch quite a few instant streaming netflix movies on my PS3 and it seems that Netflix usually cycles them in and out about monthly. I'm assuming these two new additions to the list (there are a few millenium films on there also) will be around for at least a month, hopefully longer.

It is an interesting article. Nothing which I didn't know except for the AP-TV lot now part of the Paramount lot. It will just be a matter of someone having the time and doing a search (I am sure someone can pay for entrance into the lot). However, that being said, it has been over 50 years. I doubt the suits would be in a recognizable state at this point. I mean, look at the documentries on the R2 DVDs of the Showa Mechagodzilla films. The titanosaurus suit, about 30 years old at the time, look terrible. So I bet that it is a 2:3 chance that looking for the suits is a lost cause. But eh, I wouldn't mind doing something like that myself. But that is on a big bucket list of stuff, along with being published in accouple of other publications, getting a book written, possibly working on some DVDs, doing some tables/pannels at some conventions, and last but not least go over to Japan and translate/interview books/people to write more books. Hehe, quite ambitious, aren't I?

Anyhow this is a fantastic movie. I almost wish that TOHO would put out addition with the battle sequences between Godzilla and Anguirus slowed down to simulate their massive size. But that is my only complaint about this film.
According to the entry for this film in David Kalat's book: "A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series" (2nd edition), the Keystone Cops-esque high-speed fights was a mistake on the part of the cameraman; he was supposed to slow the camera down, not speed it up.

You would think they would be able to slow it down, but maybe it's not as easy as we think. Anyway, I did enjoy the battle between Angilas/Anguirus and Godzilla. Pretty brutal. But otherwise, I'm underwhelmed by this film. For a hastily made sequel, it isn't bad, and it has some decent atmosphere.

But other than the fight between G & A, I find this rather dull. The romantic subplot was OK, but I didn't see much chemistry between the two. The latter third of the film, as they try to fend off G, is painfully slow-paced and feels like filler. The whole prisoner thing was drawn out, as was the bombing of the ice caps. My feeling is a more satisfying ending would have been for Kobayashi (whose death I felt was unnecessary and impulsive, its tragic element lost to me) to bury G with his plane.

Or better yet, to have had the final fight take place on the ice caps, with a dying Angilas causing the avalanche. I know I shouldn't judge a film by what I would have liked to see in it, but the ending just felt anti-climactic and boring.

I have to say that the Japanese version is far superior, though. I am really kicking myself for having put off watching the original Japanese versions w/English subtitles for so long. I thought the differences were exaggerated, but that's not the case (at least for the earlier films). The dialogue from the American version is horrible, not just because the dubbing is out of sync and fake sounding, but because some of it is just nonsensical, like when they explain the nature of Angilas.

I didn't care much for the score of either version, but the Japanese version has more subdued music (good) and has scenes without music more often (also good).

When G attacks Osaka, there's a lot of fire. There was a lot in the original G, too. Of course w/G there will be fire, but it seemed to me these really emphasized the city in flames. Same for the trailer for The Last War. Methinks the folks at Toho really like scenes of cities on fire.

Overall, it's decent; not one of the best, not one of the worst. However, if you are an Anguirus fan (I confess a soft spot for the ankylosaur), you'll like it just for his appearance. He actually looks, sounds, and acts pretty tough. The scientists explain that he is 200 ft tall and a carnivore, which is ridiculous for an ankylosaur, which were herbivorous and about 5 ft tall. I know it's supposed to be irradiated or whatever, but that's supposed to be from a book on paleontology. Well, at least they got the dates a little better (the creatures supposed to have lived 70 - 100 million years ago, mid- to late-Cretaceous, unlike the original Gojira which said the dinosaurs lived 2 million years ago).

I like both of your ending ideas, but I still like the bittersweet ending and didn't find it anti-climactic/boring (Of course it still isn't the best ending for a G-film), I would say that Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) is more anti-climactic but each to their own. winky

I've been looking at American trailers for many of Toho's kaiju films. Here's the American trailer for Gigantis The Fire Monster, the American title for Toho's "Godzilla Raids Again":

Matthew, I found the '55 G suit, while solid looking overall, to look a little too thin overall and the ears a little too pointy. Would you agree with my points here about the '55 suit?

In areas I agree the suit looked a bit too skinny, but slimming it down was a good idea since Godzilla had to fight physically against Anguirus and the ears never bothered me. winky

They were good fight scenes. The movie itself though I thought was just ok. I missed the movie not having a musical score done by Akira Ifukube also.
