Welcome to MONSTERLAND FORUMS! We are a casual and friendly online community of movie fans who like to talk about giant monsters, horror and sci-fi in cinema, on television and on Blu Ray/DVD. There are forums for sports, casual chat and video games as well. For those of you who like making art, writing stories and creating videos, our community includes a forum for these submissions as well. Check out our main index page and other board forums! MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports.

MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here.

For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Yes. I can see the monsters in your GRA work much better than the other one.

I bought the Classic Media boxed set and am starting off by watching the less well regarded movies so that I can develop sympathy and appreciation for them before seeing the movies that traditionally overshadow them. So I started the set by watching this one.

Thoroughly enjoyed it! The sparse music lends the film a powerful undercurrent of dread and doom. I thought the model work was well done for its time and I quite liked the monster battles, which were epic and appropriately bloody.

I also liked the humans better than most seem to. I loved the scene of all of them getting loaded. The comic relief pilot turned into the hero of the film, though its true his other pilot friend was rather bland and undercooked as a character.

Probably an 8/10 for me.

I watched this the other day, and I realized I like it a lot better than in the years before.

Also, I like the American version too; in fact, I've watched it more than the original. Mr. Green

Good to see GRA getting some positive comments about it and that also goes for Gigantis: The Fire Monster, even though I dislike it. winky

I watched Godzilla Raids Again(1955) earlier this afternoon(the original Toho version with English subtitles). While I still like this movie my likes and dislikes remain about the same since I first watched the Toho version on VHS back in late 1995.

Likes:

1. the roars of the two monsters, Godzilla and Anguirus

2. the overall kaiju battle choreography-despite what I believe is a lack of high speed filming for the monster fight sequences the battles are entertaining and we see plenty of destruction and mayhem as the creatures battle it out

3. the dark and melancholy score which is very befitting this movie given that a dreaded monster thought killed has reappeared to menace Japan as well as a second monster

4. the human cast. I especially liked 'Kobayashi" and his self sacrifice and heroisim at the end of the film thumbz up

Dislikes:

1. the lack of high speed filming-in too many sequences the monsters appear to be moving too quickly given their enormous size and weight

2. some of the water tank shots looked a little too much like, well a water tank.

3. some of the special effects shots were shaky including several sequences with the fighter jets flying overhead

4. the Godzilla suit in this movie appears a little too thin in the neck and waist, the monster appearing less bulky than in the '54 film. I also wasn't enamored with the puppet Godzilla head used but I never like the use of puppets in any kaiju films to be fair.

My gripes here do not prevent me from enjoying GRA which I do every time I watch it. This movie does not have the raw power of Gojira(1954) but as a sequel it's decent.

I agree with your like/dislike assessments of GRA. I too think its a decent sequel to Godzilla '54, but I just feel as though it would've been better if Isihiro Honda came back to direct it. My biggest gripe is what Pack mentioned already. The lack of high speed filming during most of the battle sequences. It just did not look right compared to what we're used to seeing. I partly understand about the thinner suit. So that it was a little more agile for the battles with Angilas. In the end though, I still would've preferred the suit to have a little more mass on it. Overall, I still like GRA, and I often watch it right after I watch Godzilla '54.

I was watching this movie a few days ago and I had a thought.

Japan: Oh, Godzilla! What large teeth you have!

Godzilla: The better to offend you with, my dear!

Yes, while the Godzilla Puppet used here is indeed cheaper looking.
I find it more ferocious and scary then the 54 Puppet.

I have a hard time taking these puppet shots seriously. Before now I couldn't help but make a sort of mental association with some of MADD's caricatures, and the scene of him getting buried in the ice makes it even more difficult because he looks like he's trapped in a beer cooler.

Then the other night while watching the film, I was reminded of anti-japanese WWII-era cartoons, which is pretty ironic.

very funny

My only real gripes of the '54 and '55 G films are the use of puppets in all honesty. I've never liked them in Godzilla movies and the puppet sequence used in King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962), which depicted the two monsters grappling in a long distance shot by the castle and the seaside cliff, looked atrocious. loco2

I watched the American version of this like three times last month. It's a lot more enjoyable than I ever gave it credit for.
