On 2-21-06 Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Season One-Volume One will be released. The television series, which ran on ABC from 1964 -1968, features the exploits of the world's most advanced atomic submarine, The Seaview, and her crew, led by the Seaview's inventor, Admiral Harriman Nelson(played by Richard Basehart),and the sub's Captain(Commander Lee Crane, played by David Hedison). The first installment, Season One-Volume One, will include the first fifteen episodes of this classic series, in black and white(the entire first season is in b&W). The first season of this television series is dominated by mostly espionage and spy capers, but several episodes do include aliens and monsters. Beginning with the second season(and the first in color) the advent of monsters(human-sized and gigantic) begins. The special effects for this show are, IMO, way ahead of their time. Also worth checking out is the movie Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea(1961)(starring Walter Pidgeon, Joan Fontaine, and Frankie Avalon). The 1961 movie is sold as a double feature along with Fantastic Voyage(1966). For those who have never seen this show on the Sci-Fi channel I recommend checking it out on DVD. Post your comments about this DVD release and anything about Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea TV series here. :)

I'm kind of excited about this upcoming release. I enjoyed the original TV series through syndication as a wee lass and got back into the series when the Sci-Fi Channel used to air it (God, the Sci-Fi Channel used to be so great...what happened?!), so I think I'm going to seriously consider adding this series to my DVD collection.

I also enjoyed the feature film, but loved the feature it was paired with on it's DVD release, even more....Fantastic Voyage.....I think that film is excellent and watch that quite often. :D

Following on the heels of 1960's The Lost World, an up and coming television writer and director named Irwin Allen turned his attention from the dinosaurian plateau of an uncharted Amazonian river basin to the deep sea depths, and the futuristic submarine exploring them, in Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, a film written and directed by Irwin Allen, and released by Twentieth Century Fox in 1961. The film's story: a phenomena called the Van Allen Belt, a zone of radiation encircling the Earth, has inexplicably exploded and ignited, causing an accelerating rise in global temperatures. The rise in temperature has catastrophic effects around the globe, prompting a forum of the world's top scientists, including the creator of the new atomic submarine Seaview, Admiral Harriman Nelson. The scientists are tasked with finding a way to stop the burning Van Allen Belt, before it scorches the Earth. Some scientists believe this "belt" will burn itself out-Admiral Nelson does not, and boards the Seaview to embark on a mission to save the planet. His plan: the Seaview must reach a critical launch point(at the correct time) and fire a nuclear ballistic missile into the "belt", causing an explosion that will in essence extinguish the burning zone of radiation. To get him to the launch point Admiral Nelson relies on Captain Lee Crane(played by Robert Sterling) and the rest of the crew of the Seaview, as the submarine races to it's launch point, encountering a hostile sub, and a hostile biologic(a giant octopus), along the way(no spoilers). ------Observations: A favorite sci-fi film of mine, despite the effects that are occasionally shaky, and the flimsy(or nonexistent) logic present at various junctures of the movie. Walter Pidgeon is stately and brings a controlled earnestness to his role as the brilliant Harriman Nelson. Robert Sterling is passable as the Captain of the Seaview-he's young, assertive, and a good leader. As tensions on the "Seaview" rise as the crisis progresses Captain Crane and Admiral Nelson often butt heads, so to speak. The remainder of the cast is interesting: Barbara Eden, Michael Ansara, Peter Lorre(as Nelson's trusted assistant), and Frankie Avalon(who sings the movie's opening theme song). There is an almost "fantasy" feel about this movie, which is good if you want to be entertained for about ninety minutes, not so good if you are someone who likes your science fiction cinema grounded in at least some semblance of reason and common sense(assuming that's possible). The submarine itself is, IMO, beautiful-sleek, and with an almost majestic quality, fitting for a vessel whose first mission is that of exploration. The DVD of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea is paired as a double feature with Fantastic Voyage(1966). The movie is presented in 2.35:1 letterbox and 4.0 audio, and includes the original theatrical trailer. A cast member of the 1961 film, Del Monroe, who played enlisted crew member "Kowalski", would reprise this character three years later when the Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea television series launched in 1964. Post your takes and impressions of this film here. All replies welcome. :)

This thread will also serve as the forum for the "Voyage" TV series, which ran on ABC from 1964-1968, as well.

I actually purchased the double-feature DVD for the film, Fantastic Voyage, I'd never seen the film, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea in it's entirety, but it has quickly become a fun and enjoyable film for me to watch. I really like the casting of Walter Pidgeon as Admiral Nelson and without doubt, Peter Lorre is always enjoyable to watch. Very fun film in a Saturday matinee kind of way, in my opinion. :)

Though I like Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea(1961) very much, there are some things that I did not like about it: I was not impressed with the character played by Michael Ansara, a shipwreck survivor turned religious zealot who tries to stop Nelson from firing the world-saving rocket. I also was not particularly enamored with the presence of Frankie Avalon. I'm guessing he was cast due to his popularity with the young ladies, the result of the various "Beach" and "Beach Blanket" films he was in, co-starring Annette Funicello. I do admit to being a big Annette Funicello fan-it could be because my girlfriend strongly favors this actress tongue-1 ...<clears throat>...anyway...the scene where Avalon's character smarts off to the Admiral, resulting in Nelson slapping him, was somewhat amusing, though annoying more than anything.

Without a doubt, Avalon was probably given a role for his current popularity. Now, I can't seem to recall, as it's been a while since I actually sat and watched, Voyage, but was Joan Fontaine or Barbara Eden one of the villains?

Joan Fontaine was eventually revealed to be a "villain", in that she was responsible for starting the fire in Admiral Nelson's cabin. Some notes she had typed were also discovered-she made them in an attempt to convince Nelson not to fire the missile. FYI Joan Fontaine played the psychiatrist, onboard the Seaview to study and evaluate the crew of the Seaview under duress.

Pictured: original poster art for Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea(1961)

Note: in the 1961 film the Seaview has two rows of observation windows near it's glass "nose"-in the television series(1964-1968) the "Seaview" has only one row of observation windows.

Though I enjoy the espionage episodes(and related) of the television series Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea(1964-1968), it is the episodes featuring undersea giants that have always been my favorites.

Pictured: the giant sea spider hovers menacingly above the Seaview in a second season episode of the series called The Monster's Web

I think you will enjoy it. I am assuming you already have Season One, Volume One. Episodes featuring giants: The Ghost Of Moby Dick(a giant whale), The Creature(giant manta ray), Mutiny(a truly gigantic jellyfish), and The Condemned(giant seaweed monster).

Other Packmule favorites:

Jonah And The Whale(giant whale)
Leviathan(underwater fissure causes growth in sea creatures, and a scientist)
The Men-fish(human sized hybrids, and one very large one)
The Monster's Web(giant sea spider)
Werewolf(a werewolf is loose on the sub)
Brand Of The Beast(Nelson, bitten in the "Werewolf" episode, becomes one himself)
Man Beast(a deep dive experiment mutates Crane into a monster)**
Deadly Creature Below!(giant seaweed monster, similar to "The Condemned" episode)

**Season Four episode
all the other episodes are Season Two episodes

Kimi, I believe Season Two, Volume One is set for release in October of this year.

thumbs up
