Despite spending more time on the computer I still manage to read, mostly the newspaper, on occasion books related to my field, landscaping, my quarterly issue of G-Fan, and a monthly magazine I receive that pertains to commercial and residential lawn maintenance. I try, too often without success, to read books. But I do try. Currently I am reading Krakatoa-The Day The World Exploded :August 27, 1883 by Simon Winchester. The book chronicles the explosion and eruption of Krakatoa, a small volcanic island in a South Pacific atoll near Java, in 1883, which still ranks as one of the most powerful explosions ever recorded on Earth. The catastrophic eruption of this small island volcano caused tsunamis(huge tidal waves), some in excess of 130 feet in height, that killed over 40,000 people. The blast itself caused shockwaves(air and ground) that circled the Earth seven times, and the strata blasted into the atmosphere would remain there for years, causing noticeable climactic changes in many neighboring geogaphic regions. The book also looks at the resulting political changes that occured in the neighboring islands, most notably Java. ----Post what you're reading here, anytime. Feel free to discuss. Post other good books you've read. All replies welcome. :)

I'm re-reading one of my favorite novels from Stephen King, The Stand. I can't tell you how many times I've read this book and I enjoy it each and every time. I love the unedited version that was put out several years ago, it expanded on some of the characters and made a little more sense of some of the action that took place. I was given the DVD for the TV-mini-series as a gift, for which I was grateful, but nothing can compare to that book!

I have not read the book, or seen the movie, though I am aware of what the story is about. Sounds good. Have you read It? It was a tough read to be sure, at over 1000 pages, but it was outstanding, a personal favorite of mine from Stephen King. Another of his books I enjoyed was Graveyard Shift, an anthology of stories. This guy is a master,IMO, at writing really creepy horror stories. Another author you might check out KF: Dean Koontz. Two books I have by him that are really good: Watchers and Phantoms. Neither was a particularly good movie, but the books are, IMO, outstanding. :)

The Stand, in it's unedited form is extremely long, well over 1000 pages, but I swear, it's the kind of story that draws you in and you really feel as if you're standing there, just out of sight, watching everything that's taking place. Great film and one I'd easily recommend. I have read, It, but I've never sat through the entire film or was it mini-series?

My Supervisor was a huge Koontz fan and I ourchased him a few of his books as Christmas gifts, but never read any, myself, I'll definitely look into those suggestions, thanks!

I also love Clive Barker's, Books of Blood, I believe it's that collection of stories that has the short story, Rawhead Rex.

It was a television mini-series, including actors John Ritter, Tim Reid and Richard Thomas, to name a few. I thought it was okay, but nowhere near as good as the book. In regards to Clive Barker, I have never read any books by him, but I am very familiar with his film work, including the Hellraiser horror films, which feature Pinhead and The Cenobytes, definitely guests you do not want over for tea and crumpets :ph43r: -I saw bits and pieces of the film Rawhead Rex-the title creature is hideous, another character I would not want to have over for dinner tongue-1

Sadly, most films or mini series based on King novels never seem to be nearly as good as the books, themselves!

Pinhead would definitely not make my guest list, but I love watching all of his devilsh doings! Rawhead Rex wasn't a bad film, but the story was so good, I think adapting a short story into a feature length film takes some hard work and justice is rarely done, but the film is quite good. I have the Region 2 disc from the UK, but I'm not sure it's the unedited version.

My recollection is that Rawhead Rex was some sort of revived demon...my memory of the roaring shriek it made was much clearer...it was bloodcurdling. silver surprised

Just finished reading Lucifer's Hammer, written by Larry Niven and David Pournelle. The book, a work of fiction, chronicles the impact of a massive comet, dubbed "Lucifer's Hammer", with the Earth, including the events leading up to the collision, and the catastrophic consequences of the comet's impact with our planet. The comet actually breaks up into smaller pieces as it enter's Earth atmosphere, many of these "pieces" anywhere from a mile to several miles wide in diameter,, and weighing billions of tons. Some of the comet's fragments, travelling at over 10,000 MPH, impact at sea, generating monstrous tsunamis(tidal waves), some in excess of 1500 feet in height, that wipe out coastal areas of scores of countries across the globe, including one that essentially creates a channel across the state of Florida. Other impacts spawn enormous forest fires and earthquakes. The last one-third of the book entails how the surviving members of humanity survive, around what may, or may not be, the only undamaged nuclear reactor on Earth. A terrific book.

I am planning on reading next another book by these two writers, called Footfall, about an invasion of Earth by aliens who resemble elephants. nod

I have several of Steve Alten's books: Meg, The Trench, Meg-Primal Waters, and Goliath(just bought) . I enjoyed reading everyone of them. I understand that Meg is coming to the big screen, in 2007, and is going to be directed by Jan DeBont("Speed"). You can check out Alten's website for more info: Steve Alten

My roommate's brother just sent me, Mary Shelley's, Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's, Dracula, so I'm currently re-reading these great stories.

I also recently finished the Dennis Wheatley novel, Uncharted Seas on which the 1968 Hammer Studio's film, The Lost Continent was based. Mr Green

Now that I have finished Footfall(Larry Niven/David Pournelle) I am now reading Phantoms, by Dean Koontz. The movie based on this book was released in 1997, and starred Ben Affleck and Joanna Going. So far I would have to say that the book is, not surprisingly, much better than the film.

I'm back into reading comic books. Still a DC guy!

Action Comics, All Star Superman, Green Lantern, and Justice League of America.

I'm also enjoying IDW's STAR TREK comics. Star Trek: Klingons was awesome and I'm enjoying Star Trek: Year Four.

This November Dynamite and Wildstorm comics are teaming up for FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH! It's based on the final draft script for the unproduced film.
