The year 1966 was a busy one. In addition to Ultraman another giant superhero television series made it's debut(actually just beating Ultraman's release date by a short time): Space Giants(released as "Ambassador Magma In Japan" in Japan) a series featuring Goldar, his wife Silvar, their son Gam, a family of aliens with the abilty to transform themselves into rockets. Also residing on the island is "Methusan", an old wizard and advisor to Goldar. They reside on a volcanic island. Goldar and family must protect the Earth from the evil alien "Rodak". Unlike the Ultraman series, which is "told" in an episode-to-episode basis, each one featuring a different monster(s), this series is told in story "arcs". Gam befriends Mikko,a young boy who, blowing into a special device that sounds like a dogwhistle, can summon Gam, Silvar, or Goldar, depending on how many times he blows its. Another difference is the size of the superhero-Ultraman was about 40 meters tall, like the monsters he battled. In Space Giants Goldar appears to be more in the 50 foot range, though some camera angles and shots make him look larger. The special effects are not as good, I think, as it's counterpart series, Ultraman, but they compare generally well with that of some of the Showa Gamera films. Discuss the series Space Giants here, your thoughts, ctritiques, questions, observations, related links, etc. All replies welcome. :)

That series looks really good, strange, I didn't know what "Spage Giants" was up to now, but I did hear the name somewhere. I will have to search for this series!!!
'The void is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite — there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things' - Bruce Lee

Space Giants is lots of fun, I think. I watched it on TV as a youngster. There are some interesting monsters in this TV series. With all the discussion of all things Ultraman this series, along with other superhero fare like Megaloman, Zonefighter, and Kamen Rider. often gets overlooked a bit. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

Bob Johnson has put together, at SciFi Japan.com, a comprehensive look back at the series Ambassador Magma, a television series also known as "Space Giants", which first aired on Japanese television in 1966. Contributing to Mr. Johnson's work was Keith Aiken. Click the link to see this great article, which includes photos from the series and other stills: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/?cat=14

thumbs up

The most low-budget suit ever, it would appear, appeared in this show.

I'm curious as to wether that monster is supposed to be blind, or if it has eyes somewhere else, because I'm not seeing any there. Interestingly enough, Im sure this monster was probably powerful despite it's simple appearance. Too bad I've never seen this show. thumbs down

Space Giants used to air on TBS(Turner Broadcasting) back in the mid and late 1980's. You can find a scattering of this series at YouTube, but not much.

Here's an index of "Space Giants" at YouTube:

This show reminds me of the fact that there are so many great Japanese shows from the 60s/70s that need to be released on Region 1 DVD. Just a few I can think of off the top of my head: Ultraseven, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, The Space Giants, and Zone Fighter.

I think, Dan, that guys like August Ragone may play an important role in what we see of these TV series, released on R1 DVD, in the future. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't August know Cliff McMillan(spelling?) from BCI? BCI has already released Ultraman(1966-1967) to R1 DVD and we're about to see Iron King(1973) streeting on 11/6/07, as well as Giant Robot Red Baron and another tokusatsu TV series after that. I'm sure August is always lobbying Mr. McMillan at BCI to put these classics on DVD. Hopefully both August and others like Keith Aiken can affect, positively, the release of more of these shows to R1 DVD. I would buy Ultraseven, The Return Of Ultraman, Ultra Q & Space Giants on R1 DVD in a heartbeat if they were released. There is no way I can afford the asking price, at Amazon.com japan, for the R2 DVD box set of Ultraseven. :(

August was pretty much responsible for those newest DVD box sets by BCI. Hopefully we will see more.
