Welcome to MONSTERLAND FORUMS! We are a casual and friendly online community of movie fans who like to talk about giant monsters, horror and sci-fi in cinema, on television and on Blu Ray/DVD. There are forums for sports, casual chat and video games as well. For those of you who like making art, writing stories and creating videos, our community includes a forum for these submissions as well. Check out our main index page and other board forums! Anyone is welcome to join our community!

MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports.

MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here.

For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Legendary TV producer Irwin Allen, who was primarily responsible for bringing sci-fi television series like The Time Tunnel, Land Of The Giants, Lost In Space, and my favorite, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, into living rooms during the mid and late sixties, also produced films: The Poseidon Adventure(1972) and The Towering Infeno(1974). One of his earliest films, no doubt dated and certainly more obscure, is The Lost World, released by Twentieth Century Fox in 1960. The story: Professor Challenger, a world reknowned, and cantankerous scientist, has returned from a trip to a remote region of the Amazon claiming to have seen dinosaurs. At a press conference hastily called to discuss the matter, it is decided that an expedition will return to the region to look for the dinos. The expedition consists of Challenger( Claude Rains), an international playboy/adventurer(Michael Rennie), a reporter(David Hedison), one of Challenger's professorial colleagues(Richard Haydn), a socialite(Jill St. John tongue-1 ), and a handful of others. Indeed the group encounters, upon their arrival, giants of the isolated plateau. When their helicopter is wrecked by one of the monstrous , indigenous inhabitants of the plateau, they struggle to survive their ordeal, made more difficult by the ulterior motives of their guide Manuel Gomez(played by Fernando Lamas ) and his bumbling, seedy sidekick Costa(Jay Novello). ---Observations: the dino effects are bad, as lizards are used to render the prehistoric creatures. Despite this movie's drawbacks I still enjoy watching it all the time. I do not think this film has been officially released on DVD. I own a copy of it on DVD-R, in full frame, but with nice cover art. Post your thoughts of this old film here. All replies welcome. :)

I love this film.....not sure how old I was the first time I saw this film, I'm thinking it came on TV when I was about 5-7 and anything with dinos was an immediate hit with me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but much like Gerry/Sylvia Anderson produced shows or their feature film, Irwin Allen's films all have a certain, comfortable feel to them. Doesn't matter that the film has probably aged very poorly, I'll still sit and watch it and I also have this on disc, DVD+R and can only hope that we'll eventually see an official DVD release.

Gee, how can you not enjoy a film with a cast like this! :D

I liked the cast of characters in this film more than any other aspect of it to be honest. The dinosaurs in this film are all lizards(or a croc) with fake appendages attached to make them look more... dinosaurian? I will make an exception to the dino effects by saying that I did like the way the fire monster(that erupted up out of the cavern lake) was rendered-it's consumption of one of the group's members obviously added some tension to the scene crazy -the cast aspects I liked in particular: 1. Professor Challenger vs reporter Ed Malone, at the airport 2. Ed Malone Vs Michael Rennie, their brief skirmish after arguing about bringing the native girl into the group 3. Ed Malone's obvious interest in Jill St John-his initial attempts at putting the moves on her are bumbling to be sure, but he redeems himself by helping her later escape the dinosaur that would like nothing more than to dine on them both 4. Professor Challenger vs his "doubting Thomas" professorial colleague Summerlee=grumpy old men eyebrow

The characters were very good to be honest and in spite of the reptiles having odd little appendages attached to make them appear more dinosaur-like, it all worked for me, mainly because many of these films were my first exposure to dinosaurs. Once I began visiting the library in elementary school, I saw what dinosaurs were really like and had to accept some of these films dinos for pure cheese, but that would come a little later for me. :)

Indeed. The scene where the group inspects their wrecked chopper(after the first dino attack at night) and Professor Challenger announces that they have just been "visited" by a brontosaurus left me, as someone with even an average knowledge of dinosaurs, scratching my head.

Actual brontosaurus: Posted Image

Dino in The Lost World described as a brontosaurus by professor Challenger:

LOL....yes, it's quite amazing to look back at what films attempted to pass off as actual dinos at one time, but even so, I find they all have a fun sense of nostalgia, now. Mr Green

Indeed. Many of the subtle, and sometimes not so subtle contradictions, and outright absurdities, add to these film's charms. Sometimes I think too many people take these films way too seriously=impossible to really enjoy them at all. confused

How true! I have attempted, rather unsuccessfully for the most part, to introduce my roommate to classic sci-fi/horror films, including the kaiju classics and for the most part, she tries to watch these films in a serious state of mind and as a result, there are very few classic sci-fi/horror films she'll even watch. :(

I've always figured that movies that should be viewed with, as you put it, a "serious state of mind", are dramas.

Perhaps serious state of mind is not the correct phrase I should be using. She seems to have a difficult time accepting anything in a classic sci-fi/horror film that doesn't make 100% sense. What's the saying....she's unable to suspend disbelief?

I always thought the "fiction" part of science fiction implied some things that might not be real, at least now, but possibly in the future. I have a friend who I tried to introduce to Godzilla films, after he asked about them. In fact, I took him to the premier of Godzilla(1998), in May of 1998. I took a day off from work(I was a self-employed contractor at the time), bought myself and my friend our movie tickets and entered the theater. I was fired up to see this movie. About 30 minutes into the film my friend fell asleep. silver surprised Guess the old saying is true: you can bring a horse to the water but you can't make him drink it. tongue-1

Well, I ended up finding several titles a bit cheaper at, DVD Pacific, so I went there and placed my pre-order, but because of the trip to Canada, I tried to keep my pre-order total at $50-$60, so The Lost World will have to be ordered, later in the week. <_<

You'll get it Kimi. Hopefully this month or next. Maybe you can gift yourself this DVD for Christmas. I'll say this: once this two disc'er of The Lost World(1960) is OOP I would look for prices for this DVD to be significantly higher on eBay and Amazon...it's that good an effort. noddy
