In December of 2003 Toho released Godzilla:Tokyo SOS. In this movie Kiryu, aka MechaGodzilla, is currently under repairs(from it's battle in 2002's GxMG). Unfortunately for Japan, Godzilla awakens once more and emerges from the ocean depths to make landfall again. Enter Mothra, who will defend Japan against the Monster King, provided the authorities scrap Kiryu. They don't(of course), and Godzilla and adult Mothra do battle once more, followed by Kiryu entering the fight, and lastly, the twin(larval) Mothras. ----I like this film, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was too similar to the 2002 film that preceded it. Seeing Chujo again(played by veteran Toho actor Hiroshi Koizumi in a role reprisal from the original 1961 Mothra film) was marvelous, and the twin fairies were beautiful(as always tongue-1 ). A solid, if not spectacular entry in the Godzilla film series. Post your thoughts, impressions, and critiques of this film and anything related to it here. :)

It was pretty good, not as good as the film before it but a decent sequel nonetheless.

I like the fact that Mothra was in it and how Kiryu actually seemed to be able to think and had emotions was cool.
SPFX were decent, acting was just plain OK, pacing was a little slower than the previous film but still not that bad.

3.5/5 for me, it was a fun film nonetheless.

I enjoyed seeing Godzilla and Mothra do battle again. To me they are natural rivals and hence I never bore watching them scrap. I know that this film was a continuation of the previous film, Godzilla X MechaGodzilla, but as I said before, the special effects, the acting, and the overall "feel" of "Tokyo SOS" reminded me too much of the movie preceding it.

kiryu said goodbye in tokyo sos

That's a very good observation bcr1. In fact, I didn't notice this until the second time I watched this film-you could see the word "sayonara" display on the computer screen as young Chujo hung on for dear life, Godzilla and MG descending together towards the sea.

I use to really like this movie but now it's not the same anymore...it's lost a lot of it's luster. Then again the entire Millennium series is a bit boring to me but I can still watch them on a off-day with nothing to do. I still love the designs of all the monsters and there were some great effects in this movie (along with some real dull ones).

I have always thought Godzilla Tokyo SOS(2003) was too similar too its predecessor film, Godzilla X Mechagodzilla(2002), one reason why the 2003 movie is only modestly entertaining to me. I liked seeing Chujo(played by Hiroshi Koizumi) again, as he reprised his character from Mothra(1961) and seeing, just once, Millenium Godzilla battle it out with Mothra. By the time this movie came out I was, Trent, kind of "burned out" in seeing Godzilla fight Mothra again, more than anything. As for films "losing their luster", most of the Heisei "G" films have lost much of theirs for me. I still watch The Return Of Godzilla(1984), Godzilla Vs Biollante(1989), & Godzilla vs King Ghidorah(1991) every now and then. The rest of the Heisei Godzilla movies I seldom watch anymore, especially Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla(1994), IMO the nadir of the Heisei G series of movies. I can still enjoy all the Showa G films, no problem. For me: Showa G films>Millennium G films>Heisei G films

See I love the Heisei series films minus SpaceGodzilla cross eyed but indeed the Showa era was the best (minus Godzilla's Revenge...yuck!). I can't wait any Millennium movie all the way through anymore, I skip around if that.

I found Godzilla: Tokyo SOS a big disappointment after Godzilla against mechaGodzilla, I liked the AZC but they got rid of it, but the new weapon to replace it is a nice special effect.

MechaGodzilla to me looks good, possible better then he looked previously.

Mothra and the larvae are nicely detailed, but I do wish Toho will give them a longer rest then Godzilla, since Im beginning to get annoyed at seeing her in the G-films.

Godzilla deisgn looks good, but that wound makes him look more rubbery.

The special effects are well done and to me hard to spot problems.

Im still thinking of getting it higher on the list, since it to me is the worst Millennium film, since it does copy off of other Godzilla films and has stock footage from Godzilla vs Biollante.

so Im going to give this film another chance and see if it beats GxM.

also it does make a great sig picture Godzilla: tokyo SOS.

Same here, because Godzilla Tokyo SOS seemed, to me, too much of a "copy", for lack of better word, to Godzilla X Mechagodzilla. I did like seeing Hiroshi Koizumi reprise his role of of the linguist and language specialist "Chujo".

I would also like to see Mothra get an extended break from the big screen for a while. This lepidopteral monster has appeared, in either larval or adult form, in a lot of films. They are:

Mothra(1961)
Mothra vs Godzilla(1964)
Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster(1966)
Destroy All Monsters(1968)
Godzilla Vs Mothra(1992)
Godzilla Mothra & King Ghidorah: All Out Monster Atack(2001)
Godzilla Tokyo SOS(2003)
Godzilla Final Wars(2004)
Rebirth Of Mothra(1996)
Rebirth Of Mothra 2(1997)
Mothra 3: Invasion Of King Ghidorah(1998)

That's eleven films. This kaiju should get a break from cinema, at least for a while.

Between the two I also prefer Godzilla Vs Megaguirus(2000).

I just didn't like that Mothra died. Very sad. and that Godzilla got the drill thing to the stomach.

It sure does get redundant watching Mothra get killed in these movies, doesn't it? I didn't like the "drill" sequence either. Imagine if this had been a "Gamera" movie with a scene like that: there'd be green blood everywhere. freak out

Mothra always kinda reminded me of a Phoenix every time she dies she is reborn as her younger self....I'm sure that is the idea that Toho was going for but also allows to to know that despite almost anything she'll be back.
