On December 16, 1967 Toho released Son Of Godzilla. The story: A small group of scientists conduct weather-control experiments on Solgel Island, however the experiment goes wrong, resulting in irradiated rainstorms and heat that enlarge a species of indigenous insects on the island, Kamikiras(mantises). Making things even more interesting for the scientific team is the emergence of Minya(from an egg) on the island and the arrival of Godzilla himself(from the ocean depths). Godzilla proceeds to give some "fatherly" lessons to his son on how to emit the oral beam, as well as rendering assistance to Minya in it's skirmish with the giant mantises. Any humor that creeps into play between father and son kaiju is rudely interrupted by Kumonga, an enormous spider that, accidentally awakened, erupts up and out of a ravine to menace both the humans and other kaiju on the island... -----Observations: I have come to like this movie more with the passage of time, though some things about the film still annoy me greatly: 1. The Godzilla suit used in this film is horrendous 2. Minya's "roar" is an intermittent mix of squeaking and another sound that by itself is more like the braying of a jackass thumbs down ----That said there are positives: 1. Kumonga-a creepy and effectively rendered giant arachnid 2. the scene where Godzilla and Minya huddle in the artificially-generated snowfall at the end of the film is truly memorable, a touch of "humanity" revealed in these monsters :) ---This film is also enjoying a quality Reg.1 DVD release(letterboxed and a good print) courtesy of Columbia/Tri-Star----Post your take on this movie, and anything else regarding this film, here. :) |

You can count me in as a fan of this film. :D Minya is like any child, he has his annoying moments, but overall, he's easy to watch and good for a laugh or two, especially when Minya is attempting the oral beam and little smoke rings emerge and Godzilla finally stomps the little one's tail. As I am terrified of any spider, any size, the scenes with Kumonga are excellent and creepy. I agree with you, packmule, the final scene with Godzilla and Minya huddled together is really touching and a great ending to the film. Columbia/Tri-Star have released this film along with others in some great looking discs, but their prices always seem a tad high. I guess they can't be too high, as I believe I own all the releases, now, but at almost $25 a pop in some stores, it does seem high. |

I have always paid around $19.99 + tax for mine. That statement will be put to the test as I look for Space Amoeba(1970) and Garuda(2000) Mediablasters DVDs this weekend to replace my DVD-R's of each. silver surprised |

This film is enjoyable, Im fine with Minya, he does get a bit annoying, but he is worth a laugh. Godzilla's suit looks silly, but seems to be more towards a father figure. The Special Effects are nice, the puppet monster are well done, mostly komonga. I liked the Island, it was colorful, plus the ending is sweet. |

Son Of Godzilla(1967) has grown on me over the years. At first I considered it a mildly enjoyable Godzilla film, at best. Now, I like to watch it about twice a year(on DVD). The wireworks used to bring the Kamakiras, or giant mantises, to life is very good. I read that ten(10) separate wires were needed for each mantis, thirty all total since there are three of these giant insect monsters at the beginning of the film. I also liked Kumonga, his movements and his appearance-the moving mandibles look creepy and the giant spider leaves no doubt that it is a constant threat to both humans and other kaiju on Solgel Island. I have long considered the Musukogoji suit to be the worst looking of all the series of "G" films. That said I can tolerate it more now as my appreciation for this movie has grown. I also enjoyed seeing all of my favorite Toho actors in the cast: Yoshio Tsuchiya, Akira Kubo, Akihiko Hirata, Tadao Takashima, and even Susumu Kurobe(briefly-he was a pilot in the plane in the opening scene). Beverly Maeda looked very lovely. ![]() The island cinematography did look great. I liked the ending also. Godzilla did exactly, IMO, what he was supposed to do: protect and mentor Minya. thumbs up |

I too, thought the Godzilla suit was awful looking the first few times I viewed this film, but the effect of it slowly wore off as I got used to it. Now I can watch the film without really thinking twice. |

Since the Musukogoji suit was used only once by Toho it stands to reason that they also must have recognized the general disdain for the suit as well. Maybe there's another reason it was never used again. confused |

Just watched this film again. My impression hasn't changed much, but that's not really a bad thing. I believe this movie, while having some corny comical touches was paced well and is a great introductory film for young viewers. I still love the scene where Godzilla emerges on the baby Minya and Kamacuras and kicks their butts to rescue the baby. I thought the "puppeteering" of the Kaiju bugs was handled well and their movements were believable. I don't get annoyed by Minya like many people do so I enjoyed his scenes, as cheesy as they were, I have a soft spot for the scene where Godzilla "teaches" Minya to breathe the full ray and not just the atomic rings. After seeing that movie at 4 or 5 years old, I never forgot that scene for some reason. Alot of the human acting was over the top in this one but I think it falls into play with the rest of the younger aim of this film. The snow scene at the end still pulls at the heartstings for me, even now. :) |

Agreed. I don't think this would be the best "Godzilla" movie to introduce first time viewers of the monster to, but it's nowhere near the worst either. Agreed. An interesting scene, and a logistics challenge for Toho's special effects crews. The wireworks staffers overhead, and obviously out of camera view, had to manipulate ten wires per Kamakiras, thirty total, and without getting them tangled up or caught on the appendages of the insect monster props. I thought the effects people did a marvelous job here with the wireworks. thumbs up Indeed, a very nice touch, watching Godzilla protect the smaller monster from the elements. No doubt Godzilla stepped to the plate in this film, saving Minya from both the Kamakiras and Kumonga, then teaching the small kaiju how to deploy his flame breath, and of course the ending. Though I have never been enamored watching Godzilla, in a film, portrayed as a protagonist or anything close to it this movie is the exception for me. My view of Son Of Godzilla(1967) has improved greatly over the years and I now enjoy watching the DVD of this film once or twice a year. |

As a kid I always preferred the "good guy" Godzilla. Strangely enough my favorite films were Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla On Monster Island, and the one we're discussing here. Now I prefer a more aggressive Godzilla and the Honda films of the 60's. Amazing how one's opinion on things like this change when you get older. |
