MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here. For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju). -Lee "Packmule" Merritt site founder |

Chase Mitchell, who used to own and operate Nihon Fantasy, a mail order VHS catalog business for Japanese fantasy/kaiju cinema, has apparently discarded his business in order to pursue making YouTube videos, including this tribute to Minya: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4...earch&plindex=9

IMO one of the main highlights in SOG is Kumonga. B) He looks good and doesnt look silly, like future Godzilla foes (Gigan, Megalon), thhe sounds he makes is also creepy, Im sure that is what Toho wanted Kumonga to be, a creepy kaiju. The puppeteers did a very good job bring Kumonga to life, also its rather hard to see the strings. rockin' |

Agreed on all points. I remember watching this film long ago for the first time on TV, and admittedly I wasn't very impressed and placed this movie only marginally higher, on my list of favorites, above Godzilla Vs Megalon and Godzilla's Revenge. Over the years, and watching this movie in widescreen and it's original language with english subtitles, my take on Son Of Godzilla has vastly improved. I think sometimes we tend to overlook, a little anyway, the challenges and difficulties that were often faced by Toho's special effects crews in the making of the various monster effects sequences, none more so than the wireworks used to bring many of these creatures to life, e.g. Mothra, Rodan and the Kumonga & Kamakiras is SOG. I have always admired the work Toho's employees put into the making of their Godzilla and other sci-fi/fantasy films. thumbs up |

Agreed. First time I saw him, I felt he looked pretty eerie. A very similar monster, though FAR less skillfully made, was used in an episode of Ultra Q (Episode 9: Baron Spider) about a year earlier. Compared to Kumonga, it was almost laughable. |

I'll agree that Kumonga was a good monster and pretty much the highlight of the film for me....it's no secret that I wasn't very fond of this film and rank it one of the lowest but Kumonga was a good monster and would have liked to see it in a better film because other then Destory All Monsters which I quite enjoyed but was only in it pretty briefly but did make a good standing against Ghidorah. Other wise it was only in this which never liked and Final Wars.....and I don't need to state my opinions on that one. I would definitely like to see Kumonga better utilized. ....also I never had much of a problem with Gigan who while a cheesy monster I found to be likable enough. |

Assuming you're referring to Godzilla's ray effects, Matthew, my response would be: confused. It wasn't bad, the ray effects just seemed, to me, to be about the same as all the other Showa G films. |

I'm glad to see this happening. It would be great if we could see a classic G film shown at the least, once or twice per month.

This is actually the first time that TCM has ever broadcast a Godzilla movie. I didn't know this until after reading the short article about this at Sci-Fi Japan. TCM aired Mothra(1961) about five or six years ago and I haven't seen it on TCM since. Hopefully this will be the start of a trend by TCM to air classic G films from time to time.

I didn't watch the TCM broadcast of Son Of Godzilla(1967) but from what I read in a topic thread at ATARI it wasn't the AIP dubbed version. |

While authoring a mini-review of Son Of Godzilla at another message board I came across a sardonic 2005 review of this film authored by a Nathan Decker of Million Monkey Theater.com, which includes some nice screen caps from the movie: http://www.millionmonkeytheater.com/SonofGodzilla.html |

Haha, great review. Hilarious stuff in there. I liked Son of Godzilla a lot when I was a kid. I probably wouldn't like it as much now, but from reading the review it seems like there's still a lot to like about this movie. And then there's the sentimental value that goes with it. |

The R1 DVD released by Sony is excellent. The movie's colors look vibrant and the island cinematography also looks great. Watching this film in it's original aspect ratio and in Japanese language(w/English subtitles) is IMO the best way to watch and fully appreciate this film. |

There are three reasons why I still watch this film: -amazing sets and matte paintings -Kumonga prop, both full body and the giant leg prop -Kamakuras props. Awesome wire work |

Son Of Godzilla is one of about 5 or 6 showa films that I don't mind watching every so often, maybe once a year. While I could easily go without some of them for years, Son of G is one I always want to come back to from time to time, and I think it's a testament to the film's redeeming qualities plus the fact that it brings back good childhood memories. |
