Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

I feel like Minya is...well I'll quote All Monsters Attack's opening on this one.
"Minya, Minya, poo poo poo".

All things considered I enjoy this movie.

I've always wondered why Toho opted to create the Musukogoji suit. Apparently the previous G suits must have been deemed unusable...or in fact the Musukogoji suit was chosen because somebody at Toho actually liked the suit. confuzed

It does resemble Minya more. That's one thing to think about.

I have considered that...and I'm still mystified by Toho's opting to use this suit for SOG. winky

Maybe they made the Minya suit before taking into consideration the big G.

Well it was pretty obvious they went back to the MINYA/Minilla look for FW. I mean that was Minya... and that kid was definitely another version of Ichiro Miki (GR).

I actually like Minya's look. Believe it or not he can actually look good.

Besides... this movie is pretty cool... GREAT HUMAN CAST with all kinds of personalities.

Kaiju were cool as well. Kamarcus was beautiful and watching Kumonga move is always pretty awesome (Especially now having it on Widescreen... just AWESOME!).

Yeah the G-suit was lacking... and Minya SHOULD have looked a little more Godzilla-ish. but those are pretty minor I think.

Great movie with a very moving ending.

Pros:

-Jun Fukuda's direction of the human cast is stellar, and the cast all seem to be enjoying themselves.

-Kumonga, a surprisingly formidable foe for the King of The Monsters. Shame on Final Wars for not getting him right. Not to mention how well Tsuburaya and Sadamasa Arikawa portrayed him. I personally think of this as the best giant spider in a film until Eight Legged Freaks came along.

- Beverly Maeda as the island girl.

- The weather control experiments: A very interesting concept way ahead of its time.

- Masaru Sato's score

-The kaiju battles.

-The ending

Cons:
- Minya and Godzilla's physical appearances leave much to be desired...

- Kamacuras, nothing more than cannon fodder sadly.

Overall, I find this as one of my all time favorites in the series now! 8/10!

Agreed. winky

I disagree with you here. Have you seen the 1955 film Tarantula? I thought the giant spider(tarantula) in this movie was remarkably realistic given the year this film was made. Just my opinion.

Agreed, absolutely. The "Musukogoji" suit is IMO the worst looking Godzilla suit of any Godzilla film, period. I also didn't like Minya's look either although I am admittedly more tolerant of this given what must have been a difficult task of creating the small monster for the big screen.

Agreed. That said I think the difficulty the Toho wire works effects staff must have had animating the movements of the two giant mantids likely contributes to the somewhat flimsy looking appearance of the pair of enormous insects. Still, I think the Toho SPFX crews did a great job bringing these two creatures to life.

I've heard people say that Jun Fukuda was responsible for the downfall of Godzilla. Poo, Poo! This film and the previous, Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, are definitely not examples of such. As a matter of fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that they're two of the most enjoyable films of the franchise. The score in this one is a hit; while not being as much of a knockout as Sea Monster, it still fit the tone of the movie very well. As others have said, the Godzilla suit is terrible. I have a soft spot in my heart for Minilla, but yeah, he looked like an idiot. The Kamacuras and Kumonga were very impressive marionette work, and the battle with Kumonga is a good one. The characters are a hit. They all pulled off their roles in excellent fashion. This is a 4/5 for me.

And Tarantula was the best spider movie ever!

I would strongly disagree with anyone who would make this claim. I have always admired Jun Fukuda's directorial efforts with his Godzilla films. Fukuda, in interviews, expressed considerable disdain for directing Godzilla movies but didn't allow his personal feelings, as far as I can see, to adversely affect the G films he directed, all of which are action packed and well paced. I think most dedicated fans of Godzilla movies would agree with this assertion. I know some of the Fukuda directed G films aren't as popular among G fandom but I'd like to think it has less to do with Jun Fukuda and more to do with some of the sub par effects work(a decline in high speed filming) and the scores for these movies. winky

I personally despise the claim that those people make. He managed to make some of the most enjoyable Godzilla films in the series. My personal favorite of his is a tie between this film and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster. People associate Fukuda mostly with Gigan and Megalon; both horribly bad movies, yes, but his other films are quite enjoyable. Mechagodzilla ('74), Sea Monster ('66), and Son ('67) are some really good films.

I see. Considering that Minya is smaller and so much younger than his "dad" Godzilla doesn't it seem reasonable to assume Minya wouldn't be able to fire a full ray? If Godzilla is disappointed in this then I would tell Godzilla to be a little more reasonable in his expectations for his son. tongue-2

Just my opinion, Matthew. clowny1

Godzilla has high expectations because he is the king of the monsters and since the picture is just a piece of comedy, I don't recommend taking it seriously. winky

Where's the fun in that? What kind of fans would we be if we didn't needlessly critique, criticize and complain about the most intricate details and otherwise make asses out of ourselves in doing so? HMMM??? cheeky

One opinion that for me hasn't changed over the years regarding SOG: my disdain for the "Musukogoji" suit. I've always wondered why Toho used this suit. I'm guessing the previous suits used(Mosugoji, Kingoji and the ones used in the '64 G movies) were all in disrepair.

I think I read somewhere that they tried to model the Godzilla costume to kind of resemble Minilla's, and to make him look less menacing as a father. If that is true, I can see them making that choice, as the dominant audience was slowly becoming younger. But I personally would have preferred it the other way around.

I agree with the criticism of the suit. Everytime I watch this film (every couple years or so) I seem to enjoy it more than the last, with theexception of that suit. I've never liked the eyes but I get the feeling that someone may have thought it looked more like an actual Iguana or lizard's eyes. Really I have no idea.

You know, I didn't really care for the suit... but I find myself searching for an action figure of the 1967 Godzilla.

I watched Son Of Godzilla(1967) again yesterday on DVD. Some observations:

-I have newfound respect for the work of the overhead wire technicians who brought the Kamacuras and Kumonga to life. Keeping the overhead wires from getting tangled while operating them to animate these creature props must have been a real pain in the ass. loco2

-Kumonga is IMO an underrated Showa Godzilla film kaiju. It defeated and incapacitated one of the giant mantises(with its web and stinger), nearly did the same to Minya and at least put up some sort of fight to Godzilla.

-Beverly Maeda, who played the island "Saeko", was a hottie. tongue-1

-the braying donkey sound effects which were used to partially score the audio of Minya = very funny

This was the next film along our journey for me and my friend through the Godzilla series (we skipped sea monster because he'd already seen the MST3K version)
Right away he noticed a departure from the usual Ifukubian musical score as the opening credits played. I never noticed how much that opening them sounds like a Salsa dance lol. Of course there were many laughs had at this film, especially the donkey sounds coming out of Minilla.

My friend literally said "WTF" (I abreviated it of course) when he saw the new Godzilla suit.

I've not told him what to expect from the next movie. I want to surprise him when he sees all of the Toho Kaiju staring in a movie together.
