We're approaching the 50th anniversary of this movie, and still no DVD/bluray release on the horizon. A crying shame. |

It'd be nice to have the Japanese version of the film released in the states. Maybe with a commentary. Akira Ifukubes Score alone changes the tone of the film and makes it so much better. Nostalgia keeps the American Version in my mind though, even if it is inferior. I've recently had a fond re interest in the film. With some interesting Media Commentary going on in the film. And just the thought of two of the biggest and greatest Monsters then and today duking it out sounds like something in a Fan Fiction, but it was a and is a reality. I wrote a re review of the film on another forum. Thought it should go here as well. Please note I wrote the review as a blog entry on a forum that has little knowledge of Godzilla oriented things. Spoiler: click to toggle Think of it as one of my Favorites now. As it is indeed one of the most Iconic and important in the series. Both Serious and Colorful. (That Toho Scope really shines in this film. The only other one I can think of doing it just as good is either Ghidorah the three headed Monster, or Mothra vs Godzilla. Was a Classy Era.) PS: that minor argument with G2Kmaster a few pages ago was embarrassing on my part. Couldn't even use proper grammar. Nono Nono Either way, I hope to purchase the Japanese versions one day. And Maybe the poster as well.

The original R2 Toho version will be pricey(at least $50 and likely more). You can buy it from CDJapan or YesAsia. It will, like all Toho R2 DVDs, have no English subtitles. Kaleb, you might want to consider buying a multi region or code free DVD player. They are affordably priced now and start at about $50(and up) at Amazon. These devices will play Regions 1-6 and also Region 0 DVD-Rs. If you want to know where you can order(online) a quality R0 DVD-R of King Kong Vs Godzilla, uncut, in widescreen and with English subtitles(a copy of the R2 in essence) let me know and I'll send you a link(or two) to online vendors(by PM) I know who sell this DVD-R. I can't post the links to these sites because that would violate this boards' rules as posting source URLs of websites that sell "bootleg"(DVD-R) media is prohibited.

I don't know the legality or illegality of buying bootleg DVD-Rs in the United States. I do know that selling them, especially in public and on the street, can get you arrested by the police. Most people likely view buying bootleg merchandise of any kind as a form of theft: it's commonly viewed as buying a copied version of an original without paying for the original item. I have always strived to buy any and all official DVDs of movies, especially Toho kaiju films and other Japanese fantasy/sci-fi films. I've invested in two(2) code free DVD players in order to buy R3 and R4 DVDs of Toho films that(at the time) were not on R1 DVD. I have admittedly bought R0 DVD-R "bootlegs" in the past but ONLY for those Toho films that weren't on R1 DVD and were priced on R2 at an amount of $ I simply couldn't afford to pay. I haven't bought a bootleg DVD-R in about four years and have no plans to buy anymore. The only Toho film I would like on official R1 DVD is Gorath(1962) and The Last War(1961). From what I have read the source elements for the Americanized, Columbia Pictures version of Gorath are in such poor condition it seems very unlikely an official R1 DVD of this disaster movie will ever be released. As such I retain two bootleg DVD-Rs of this '62 Toho film. Eventually I'll get around to buying the R2 Toho DVD release of both of these movies. I don't encourage anyone to buy bootleg DVD-Rs now: these discs can be problematic playing in the various DVD players on the market(both older and newer models). |

Anyone care to explain to me the reason why it's so difficult for Toho to get temporary rights to the King Kong character for a remake of KK vs. G? Seems like every time they try, Universal always asks for too much financially and such. |

If anyone is interested, King Kong vs. Godzilla will be showing this Saturday night on Svengoolie on the MeTv network. Even though I have a Japanese copy of this film, it will be interesting to see it with the "horror movie host" treatment. They showed King Kong Escapes last year and I believe they did a good job. Unfortuantly they had to cut the film in order to make it fit the time slot. I wonder if they'll have to do the same for KKvsG. Still looking forward to it. |

Russ, you alluded to the reason in your post: Universal's asking price for the rights to use King Kong are likely high, presumably much higher than Toho would want to pay. Recall that after GFW(2004) Shogo Tomiyama(a Toho exec) stated that it would be at least ten years before this studio produced another Godzilla film. Declining ratings and box office receipts illustrated a growing lack of interest in Godzilla in Japan at that time hence Toho's decision to shelf Godzilla, temporarily. I saw a post by Keith Aiken at Toho Kingdom a couple of years ago in which he said interest in Godzilla in Japan is still at such a low level that Toho hasn't shown any interest in making another Godzilla movie. That said I think if Legendary Picture's film Godzilla(2014) turns a large profit at the worldwide box office Toho might reconsider their position. Maybe not immediately as LP might just turnaround and get a green light to make a sequel to their G movie as director Gareth Edwards has touched on making a sequel to this movie if it does well. I hope the LP G film does well. It would create renewed interest in Godzilla after what has been largely a decade of lukewarm interest in the monster outside the die hard kaiju film fan community.

Gorilla at large: King Kong Vs Godzilla(1963)(Universal) - revisited Having just watched the Universal Blu Ray release of King Kong Vs Godzilla, the 1963 Americanized version of the '62 Toho produced film of the same name, I thought I'd take a look back again at this Godzilla movie which I have watched more than any other G film except for 1956's Godzilla King Of The Monsters. I may "revisit" the Toho version in the near future but for this post my commentary will be limited to the American version. In this version the original soundtrack has been replaced and numerous American actors have been included in the cast. Other talking scenes from the original Toho version have been left out in the American version. What didn't change between the two versions: two of the most recognizable cinematic monsters squaring off in a climactic battle at Mt Fuji in Japan. King Kong is the decided "underdog" in the movie. Besides being slightly smaller than Godzilla(Kong is 45 meters tall, Godzilla 50 meters tall in this film), Kong is also forced to deal with Godzilla's destructive, nuclear fueled oral beam. To make the battle between the two monsters presumably less one sided, Kong is given the ability to strengthen himself from electric shocks either through lightning strikes or through contact with power lines and the giant gorilla gets a charge in this movie from both of these power sources. More observations from me, some positive and some not - Thumbs up: 1. The "Kingoji" suit design of Godzilla. Godzilla looks more reptilian and bulky in this movie, his head alligator like and also possessing a long, round ended tail and his trademark maple leaf shaped dorsal fins. 2. Godzilla's entrance scene is marvelous, the monster erupting out of the iceberg and immediately attacking the military base, incinerating tanks and demolishing an aircraft control tower. 3. Kong's foray into Tokyo. While I would have liked seeing the big ape in a longer sequence here Kong still took time to blast off the corner of a building with his bare hand and wreck a commuter train and the train tracks. 4. the final battle between Kong and Godzilla at Mt Fuji. I disliked the brief "stop motion" sequence and much of the battle lacked high speed filming but I still give the overall battle a big . Both monsters employ rugged, close in physical fighting and also hurl boulders at each other. I especially liked Kong bulldozing Godzilla with a shoulder block near the fight's end. The scene where both monsters destroy the castle before plunging into the ocean is well choreographed. Thumbs down: 1. the overall English dubbing of this movie, for me anyway, leaves a lot to be desired. ![]() 2. the folksy, down to earth analysis of "Dr. Arnold Johnson" whose inane commentary on Kong and Godzilla to the UN reporter sounded affable but also IMO idiotic as well. 3. the King Kong suit which looks atrocious. Kong more closely resembles a sasquatch in this movie than an actual gorilla. I also disliked the scenes in which elongated arms for the Kong suit were used. That said major kudos to burly Shoichi "Solomon" Hirose who wore the Kong suit. He did IMO a great job suiting Kong for this movie. |

If you already own the Universal R1 DVD of the Americanized version then I would think you would be satisfied enough with that. If you own an HDTV and a Blu Ray player I would recommend buying the BD of the Universal release of this movie. The transfer looks somewhat cleaner but I thought the audio of the BD was definitely an upgrade over the DVD.

Well my friend came over again the other night, and after watching Gojira and Godzilla raids again about a month ago, and then Rodan and Mothra the next weekend, we decided to keep going in the Godzilla series and save the non-Godzilla Toho movies for later. We watched the Japanese version of this. He asked me if this would be the same Godzilla from GRA, and I assured him it was. He enjoyed the fact that Godzilla broke free from an iceberg keeping in continuity from the last film. But where as this film was trying to play as a comedy, it actually worked on him. I'd never seen a reaction to the comedy in this film like his. When he first saw Godzilla jumping up and down and clapping his claws, he broke into hysterical laughter. There were many laughs during the final fight too. He was amused by the story of the real octopus in the scene, especially the rumor that Eiji Tsuburaya took it home and ate it. As for music, he enjoyed Godzilla's Theme in this movie. He was however a little confused about the ending and I had to explain to him that Godzilla was "defeated" while the two monsters were underwater. |

One of the strangest and laughably absurd aspects of King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) for me is the UN submarine Seahawk commanding officer. As a former U.S. Naval Reserve officer I admittedly would notice this more than the average person. What am I referring to? The submarine, despite being equipped with radar and sonar, plows nose first into an iceberg. Sonar is a device by which a submarine can detect other underwater objects(both natural and man made) nearby. Apparently having sonar wasn't sufficient to prevent the sub's skipper from allowing his vessel to ram into the side of an iceberg. The skipper of the submarine generally looked clueless. Another example of the captain's buffoonery: when one of the scientists onboard described the glowing light from the nearby iceberg "like the Cherenkov light", the Seahawk captain replied with "the Cherenkov light...what can that be?". The "Cherenkov Light" refers to the light generated by a live nuclear reactor. Given that the Seahawk is a nuclear powered submarine it stands to reason that her commanding officer would be familiar with the term "Cherenkov light"...but apparently not this captain. ![]() My current theory on what happened after King Kong and Godzilla plunged into the ocean at the conclusion of their epic battle: As the two monsters descended deeper into the water Kong either struck Godzilla in the head or drove Godzilla hard into the sea bottom. Either action would have knocked Godzilla out, allowing Kong to swim back to the ocean's surface and swim away. ![]() |

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/09/11/kong-skull-island-move-to-warner-bros-suggests-godzilla-crossover-coming?utm_source=IGN%20hub%20page&utm_medium=IGN%20(front%20page)&utm_content=24&utm_campaign=Blogroll Well folks, it looks like it may finally happen. A remake of King Kong vs Godzilla could be in the future as Legendery has been trying to move its Skull Island film over from Universal to Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers as most here are aware, own some rights to Godzilla. This would place both copyrights under the same studio. Godzilla and King Kong could thus cross over. While not a guarantee, this would be the best time to do it. The comments in the article disappoint me somewhat. It seems every other comment is "Why would they make this? Godzilla is already so much bigger than Kong. Plus wouldn't his nuclear breath just annihilate him?" It is as though they forget that Kong's original size was enhanced to about 50 meters in 1962. And that he was given the bizarre ability to conduct electricity. Sure they took artistic license to make it work, but it remains one of the quintessential Showa era Goji films. Plus, this isn't about logic, it's about watching two icons duke it out in glorious modern day visuals. I can picture their fights in the sea, in the rain, in a city. The first fight, the second, a climax, how they meet for the first time, and how they are introduced. It would be a great time. Plus, it's like Star Wars, it'll print money. Because who doesn't want to see these two fight? Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm guessing most of those comments(I browsed through them on Facebook) come from people who haven't seen the Toho film King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) or the Americanized, John Beck produced version of that movie that hit American theaters originally back in 1963. Kong's size in the '62 Toho film is officially listed at 45 meters which = 148 feet. Godzilla is slightly taller in this film at 50 meters which = 164 feet. I use to think this size disparity was strange but there are other instances where featured monsters have differing sizes: in 1966's War Of The Gargantuas Sanda is 30 metsrs tall(100 feet)) and Gaira is 25 meters tall(82 feet). The two hairy giants, despite the nominal size difference, appeared to be equally matched in battle in the movie. ![]() Titanosaurus ic clearly taller than Godzilla in 1975's Terror Of Mechagodzilla as is Mechagodzilla. King Ghidorah towers over Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra in 1964's Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster. Obviously the studio will have to hire a writer(or writers) who can pen a story which plausibly increases King Kong's size for a KK Vs G film. I figure Kong would have to be around 90 meters tall(or 300 feet) at a minimum to be able to engage a 355 foot tall Godzilla in battle. I also think giving Kong some separate power ability(lightning generation from electrical surges to his body) would be cool. Here's one possibility how Kong could be re-sized, dreamed up by yours truly: Assuming the Kong-Skull Island film is released, then perhaps King Kong is captured and sequestered at some remote location by the U.S. federal government at the end of that movie for the purpose of research. With Godzilla continuing to make appearances in and around the continental U.S.(and elsewhere) the world's governments decide it's time to try and eliminate Godzilla as a threat...and task the U.S. government with increasing a captured King Kong's size so it can then be "programmed" to seek out and kill Godzilla. Electricity might be one way the govt re-sizes Kong...or some other comparable, non nuclear energy source. I like the idea of Kong being re-sized and playing the role of being humanity's "guard dog" who is unleashed to fight and destroy Godzilla. Other storylines might work. Anyone else have any ideas on this? |

I always found the official stats on size to be a bit strange. Particularly Garia and Sanda. As you mentioned, neither looks taller than the other. I like your movie idea, Pack! Maybe they should consider you for a rough draft or even a script treatment. My story would be similar to the original and not explain the difference in height. Just have Kong be bigger already. No need for unwarranted exposition about how Kong drank a bunch of magical berry juice and got really big as a side effect. --- In sadder news, Pacific Rim 2, which was said to be filming in November 2015, has been halted indefinitely. One of the reasons, according to this article, is because of King Kong vs Godzilla. http://www.movies.com/movie-news/king-kong-vs-godzilla-vs-pacific-rim-2/19195 Which infuriates me. We already have a King Kong vs Godzilla. And even though I'd love to see two international monsters go at it again, given the choice, we don't have a Pacific Rim 2. Ugh, poor Guillermo. Guy can't catch a break. Still, he has what... a dozen or more projects he could be working on? Dude works harder than any other director in Hollywood. And yet, still seems to have time to smile. |

Hmm. Fair enough. I was under the impression that Skull Island wouldn't feature a Kong, but merely take place years later on that same island. And that the reason Legendary Pictures moved from Universal to Warner was to have the two fight in a separate universe. By how things are going, does this mean King Kong (2005) takes place in the same universe as Godzilla? (2014) If so, I buy it, but boy oh boy, did not see that coming. If Kong does need to grow to a superior size, maybe berry juice isnt the best way to do it. It worked for a 60's crowd, but today's audiences can be a tad, oh, critical. Radiation. Bam. Solves every problem. And adds a little "Nuclear bombs=Bad" in there as with most Godzilla films.

I would think King Kong would have to have a major growth spurt in order to fight Legendary Pictures' Godzilla. One could explain a growth spurt with radioactivity...or some gene modification of some kind. Having a 25 foot tall or forty foot tall Kong vs a 355 foot tall Godzilla makes no sense to me and I would think to no one else. Kong could be re-sized through some sort of process created by scientists. |

An interesting spin would be if they decided to change up the story and have Kong act as the antagonist, maybe some kind of human experiment gone wrong, and he eventually begins to destroy the planet to the point that Godzilla takes notice and comes looking for him. |
