This is my first Godzilla film, I just turned four. Yah I can still remember. As I watched, I liked what I saw, My grandma couldn't stop lauphing and making fun of it. I didn't understand why at the time. I was disapointed with the ending, I had been rooting for Godzilla. But I rewatched alot in my childhood, and actually hated this movie. Then I saw the Japanese version, with Ifukube music, and more scenes. Less american scenes. I loved this version, and it's been one of favorites ever since. Basically, the use of american actors, and the creature of the black lagoon music has never suited me. The japanese version leaves a better feeling and has more scenes that we couldn't miss. Bottom line, the american realese sucks, bad use of stocked music, American actors was useless. bad dubbing. Japanese was a masterpiece, music good, acting ok, and I can't explain this, but this movie is cheesy, yet you can enjoy every momment of it! If you get the chance to get it or see it, do so. Oh and the ending isn't altered much, just two roars heard at the end. |

I bought a double disc set(two DVD-R's) from an internet vendor whose inventory includes Japanese kaiju and sci-fi/fantasy films. The DVD-Rs are Region 0, and include the original Japanese version w/English subtitles(letterboxed format and uncut), this a copy of the Region 2 Toho DVD. The other disc in this set includes a full frame version of the American, John Beck produced 1963 version of the original Toho film. I will send you a PM with the link to see this DVD set for sale. This vendor's DVD-Rs are excellent quality and I have never had any problems of any kind with any discs I have bought from them. I believe they now accept only money orders. They have an email address in case you want to contact them with any questions. ![]() Here's the Region 3 HK DVD of this film at eThaiCD: http://www.ethaicd.com/show.php?pid=23566 It's only $7.50 plus shipping. The shipping rate will be a about $8-10, standard air. This release is only Thai language subtitled with Japanese language(only). No English subs. I own this R3 DVD. |

Going slightly off topic, I saw a mechanical ape that plays piano in a replica whiskey bar in a country western town in South Dakota. The ape looked as old and mangy as the King Kong suit did in this film. Someone definitely needed to take the old guy some hair care products. |

That mechanical ape you saw must have looked awful if it compares with the Kong suit in King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962). Perhaps the greatest disappointment for me personally watching this film is the absolutely horrendous looking Kong suit. I understand that the suit cannot be perfect. What kaiju suit could? They all have their flaws. Still, a creative looking and well made kaiju suit will IMO garner much more positive feedback than negative. As I said before in "revisits" of King Kong Vs Godzilla, the Kong suit resembles a cross between Quasimodo and an ape, more than anything. I have also found myself, at times, reminded of a Sasquatch when watching Kong suit actor Solomon Hirose inside this costume. The face of the suit is somewhat misshapen, there appears to be no discernible neck, giving Kong a hunched look, and the use of the extra long arms in certain shots of the film only worsened IMO the overall presentation of Kong in this movie. There have been, I think, far more hits than misses in overall effects and suit quality in the older Toho kaiju films. Unfortunately, the Kong suit in King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) is a huge miss.

That suit, Evan, which looks to be the one used in Godzilla Vs Biollante(1989), is not perfect, "critically" speaking as you mention or by any other standard, either objective or subjective. While I like the suit overall and believe it looks marvelous I personally dislike the eyes, which are IMO too narrow as well as the head, which I believe is a little undersized. The head of this suit has a feline(cat) like quality about it: I don't know about you guys but the head of a Godzilla suit that reminds me of a cat is not something I particularly relish. Perfection only exists as a subjectively formed perception and/or perception in someone's mind. Period. ![]() Evan, by "critically" speaking are you referring to your own opinion? Or is there an official book or printed guide by which all kaiju suits are judged, and of which the suit in the posted image by you has received a perfect "10". If there is no book as I describe, or any other OFFICIALLY sanctioned publication that is universally recognized by Toho and other companies that have made kajiu sites, then your "critically speaking" remark is nothing more than YOUR OPINION.

Criticaly grading something is a form of opinion, or atleast that is what I have been told. And in criticaly grading suits, this one takes the cake for what the filmakers embarked on. It seems to me that you think of something graded "criticaly" means factual... |

My disdain for the use of the word "critically" is founded in my belief that a person offering their opinion about something would be better off simply stating it is their opinion and describing them as exactly that. I have always associated the word "critically" within the context that it is a mostly objective standard, or objective benchmark of some kind, against which an idea or opinion is expressed: this "objective standard" could be something like what I mentioned earlier: an official book of some kind. I judge anything, a film, a painting. a song, anything by my own preferences and own impressions and everyone's impressions are different. To me the word "critically" implies a judgment of something using an objective source for a parameter. By stating our opinions about how we think a kaiju suit looks we ARE NOT basing those judgments on ANYTHING objective, but rather our own impressions and preferences, both of which are entirely SUBJECTIVE.

This was my second Godzilla movie, but it was the first one that started my obsession with Godzilla. I saw the old Goodtimes home video version, but then in 2003 I finally got to see the Japanese version and was blown away at how much better it was. Ifukube's score is definitely one of his nicest of the Showa Era along with Mothra vs. Godzilla and Destroy All Monsters. Too bad the suits didn't look better in the Japanese version. lol. |
