You said Xilian costumes for one, "You're saying that the design for the Xians' uniforms was because of some action and/or influence by Mr. Saperstein?" See? It says Xilians and not Yellow Space siut. Second, I never said he directly effect the XILIANS siuts, but he did effect them indirectly... I do not know where you are getting this yellow siut thing from. You said XILIAN and I mean XILIAN! |

Well nostalgia must go a long ways for me with this one then. I like that there's such a variety of Godzilla films out there. Some of them I can just enjoy as campy fun and others, like Gojira, Return of Godzilla, and GMK, I can take much more seriously. I think the Godzilla franchise wouldn't have the same appeal for me if every single one of them was super-serious. |

I have observed your disdain for Toho's Shogo Tomiyama with admitted amusement, Evan. I'm curious as to how you'd react to Mr. Tomiyama if you were to enter and win a Godzilla fan fic contest, the prize including an all expenses paid trip to Toho's Los Angeles(CA) office to personally meet Shogo Tomiyama, and also receive some complimentary goodies like free Godzilla Region 2 DVDs, figures and poster art. Would you still begrudge this man or would you suddenly become his best friend, even a suck up?

It is not the man I dislike - it was his choices and his reasoning. If I met him, I would treat him with respect like I would do with anyone else. I would not question him though, since I know that would be a waste of my time. As for the scenario itself, hell would have to freeze over twice... It froze over when Guilala's Counterattack was made... |

A reference to Godzilla, Rodan and Ghidrah(aka King Ghidorah) and part of the title of a Toho film they star in called Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965), a movie whose alternate titles(American and International) include "Monster Zero" and "Godzilla Vs Monster Zero". |

I didn't used to like this film much when I was younger. Too much human chit chat and not enough monster action, with the fights being especially brief. It was over an hour before any destruction occured too! It didn't help that when I first saw it,it was during a season of Godzilla films on UK TV,and while this was the second film they showed,it had been proceeded by the action packed, multi monster spectacle of Destroy All Monsters, and Invasion Of The Astro Monster, even though I knew it had been made earlier, just seemed like a much slower paced rehash with fewer monsters. However,I've gotten to like it more and more as the years go on [I'm 38,am I the oldest one around there? Just wondered, random digression, sorry],and now I consider it only a notch below the previous two films. Although the alien invasion story had been used before by Toho, this was the first time it had been used in a Godzilla film [it would soon be used to death though!],and I now kinda like the slow pace,it creates an atmosphere of mystery. The gradual uncovering of what the alien's real objectives are is very well done, and the tape that is really a demand for Earth's surrender may have been a bit of a surpise at the time. Some of the visuals, such as those on the alien planet, are really cool in a kitchsy 60s way, while the effects are often really impressive for 1965 [yet people still diss these movies has having bad effects]. The aliens look Toho's best,I think. When it finally comes around, the destruction is pretty long and impressive, despite some stock footage. I still think the fights are too brief but the first one has the Godzilla Dance, one of my favourite bits of Godzilla silliness! I also love Nick Adam's full tilt performance [and dialogue],probably the best by a Westerner in a Toho film. Kumi Mizuno [is that right? I'm crap at remembering Japanese names] is gorgeous and I don't blame the actor for having an affair with her,I would! All in all,a really solid, balanced film, more a sci fi thriller with monsters, than an all out monster movie. I actually prefer to watch the dubbed version [a rarity with me],as very little was cut or changed and you here Adam's voice. |

There are older members here. Kimi, aka KaijuFanatic, is in her early forties. I'm 47 years of age and, I believe, the oldest registered member of this message board. The "Jumping shie" dance was popular in Japan at the time of this movie(1965). SPFX director Eiji Tsuburaya wanted to incorporate this dance into the film because he believed it would please children. The Toho production staff didn't like it, nor did director Ishiro Honda. Tsuburaya, obviously, got his way in the end as this sequence was retained for the movie's final cut. You're correct: Kumi Mizuno. I've read a couple of internet restrospectives about Nick Adams that have said he was greatly enamored with Kumi Mizuno, who also co-starred with Adams in another 1965 Toho film, Frankenstein Vs Baragon(aka "Frankenstein Conquers The World"). No doubt Adams' interest in Mizuno was a source of great disdain to Nick Adam's wife and was one of the reasons that Adams and his wife eventually divorced. |

While, the Original is my favorite, I have to say King Ghidorah the 3 headed-Beast and Invasion of the Astro Monster are tied for my favorite sequel. I guess it can be said this installment was nothing, but a sci fi film with Godzilla in it but dang it's defiantly better then pretty much, any other entry in the first series after it. With the exception, of Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, and Terror of MechaGodzilla. Not sure about Son of Godzilla haven't seen that one yet. |

The X Factor: Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965) - revisited The continuing popularity of Godzilla never ceases to amaze me. Godzilla has played the antagonist and protagonist and is well liked regardless of his role in cinema. Back during the "Showa" era of Godzilla cinema a significant shift came about involving the iconic monster. Godzilla's first four films, Gojira(1954), Godzilla Raids Again(1955), King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) and Mothra Vs Godzilla(1964), all featured Godzilla as the proverbial "bad guy", a rampaging monster of potentially unlimited menace and destruction. In December of 1964, in the film Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster, Godzilla becomes a grudging protector of humanity, fighting alongside previous enemies Rodan and larval Mothra in a unified effort to fight and drive off an all powerful space monster named Ghidrah(aka King Ghidorah) who threatens the Earth. Many die hard Godzilla fans have openly expressed their dislike for Godzilla's role reversal. Some self anointed Godzilla "historians" speculate that the decline in popularity of Godzilla films can be linked to this shift. Maybe that is all true. For me, I have come to appreciate Godzilla's change from villain to "good guy". I still prefer to see Godzilla as the antagonist but, over the years and from watching the older Godzilla movies repeatedly, I believe this switch makes the "Showa" Godzilla films more interesting, collectively. That is probably a debatable point. As any film fan will likely attest, any movie featuring a "good guy" needs a worthy villain. For Godzilla that villain is obviously King Ghidorah. On the heels of Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster the gold colored, powerful space monster returns for a rematch in Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965). The story of the movie is as follows: a pair of astronauts land on a mysterious planetoid, meet a group of visor wearing aliens who ask the astronauts if they can "borrow" Godzilla and Rodan in order to drive off Monster Zero(King Ghidorah). Despite suspicions of the aliens, humanity gives in and the aliens are allowed to locate, seize and fly away with Godzilla and Rodan. The two monsters square off with King Ghidorah on "Planet X" and the space monster flies away. Humanity, promised a universal "cure all" medicine by the aliens, instead is brusquely informed they will become slaves to the Xians, the aliens desiring to colonize the Earth and threatening to deploy all three monsters as instruments of Earth's destruction should humanity refuse the alien's directive. Of course human kind does refuse and chaos ensues as the trio of monsters, under alien control, begin a rampage in Japan. Unlikely heroes emerge to help defeat the aliens. The monsters, eventually removed from the aliens control, fight again in a final battle. (no spoilers) Some observations of mine regarding this highly entertaining film, some positive and some not, for the inspection of our online community - Thumbs up: 1. the film's score by Akira Ifukube is IMO fantastic. ![]() 2. the special effects overall are marvelous. The miniatures and matte shots are used very effectively to illustrate distance shots of the monsters on the move, especially Godzilla and Rodan. One of my favorite effects sequences of all the Showa G films remains the scene where the Xians deploy their transport vessels to retrieve Godzilla from the bottom of a lake and Rodan from the interior of a mountainside. Simply outstanding. 3. the human cast of characters: collectively they entertain, their interactions critical to the conclusion of the movie. The spectrum of the characters runs the gamut: dashing American astronauts Glenn(Nick Adams) and Fuji(Akira Takarada), who refuse to be intimidated by the mysterious Xian aliens. Adams' character "Glenn" evens finds time to woo the lovely, mysterious Ms. Namikawa(Kumi Mizuno). Adding to the mix are good hearted but bumbling Tetsuo Teri(Akira Kubo), a milquetoast inventor who is intimidated by his girlfriend's over protective older brother, astronaut Fuji. I liked how Tetsuo redeemed himself with the "Lady Guard" invention which in the end helped win the day for humanity against the aliens. Off the record I'm hoping this got him points with Haruno Fuji's older brother. ![]() Astronaut Glenn also is afforded a brief sequence in which he gets to punch a couple of Xians. Despite the brevity of the scene I liked Glenns' brief can of whoop ass as he blasted a pair of Xians with overhand punches to the noggin. 4. the monster battles: I had some gripes about them(see below) but overall they were IMO well choreographed. Godzilla and Rodan worked well together, especially the final battle where Rodan picked up a charging Godzilla and used him as an airborne battering ram against King Ghidorah. 5. the primary villain in this film, the Controller Of Planet X, played by Yoshio Tsuchiya. Tsuchiya is IMO one of the ultimate Showa Godzilla film baddies. The visor covering his eyes makes it hard to read his face, this effect IMO adding to the creepiness of this character. Thumbs down: 1. there were some effects shortcomings in this film, most notably the visibility of overhead wires. Annoying to be sure but they do not detract much from the film, for me anyway 2. Godzilla's infamous "jumping shie" celebratory dance after he and Rodan had successfully driven King Ghidorah off Planet X. This scene is IMO absurd and has no place at all in this movie. One of the few outright negatives I assign to this film. 3. at the conclusion of the film astronauts Glenn and Fuji are informed by Dr. Sakurai(Jun Takazi) that they are returning to Planet X as ambassadors. My question: return to who and what? Last I checked humanity just defeated a hostile race of aliens from this small planetoid. That being the case why would we send astronauts back to what is presumably a now empty planetoid? Invasion of The Astro Monsters(1965) can be bought on Region 1 as either the '98 Simitar release(titled "Monster Zero", an in English dub only-this is an OOP release) or the stellar Classic Media release called "Invasion Of The Astro Monsters", the disc featuring both original and Americanized versions of the film. The original Toho trailer: |

I have always felt this film was quite a bit of a let down. First and foremost, compare Ghidorah from GtTHM and MZ. The design to me seems like a downgrade from the first. I've always liked the curved tops of KG's wings in the original. KG's gravity beams are also epic in the first movie. As he destroyed Tokyo, it literally looked like a hurricane roaring through through, but in MZ, his gravity beams do absolutely nothing to the buildings that a bead of caulk couldn't fix. The monster action was definitely light. There was lots of human talking and standing that I didn't care for. The final fight was incredibly short and disappointing. Definitely not a high point for the series. |

Agreed, But King Ghidorah came up from the Water, not Godzilla or Rodan. I find that strange, Usually Godzilla would appear, because the Heroe always emerges victorious. This Time the Villian came up and fled to Outer Space, and Instead Godzilla and Rodan are left with the quistion, if they are alive. It's different for the Formula. |
