I love those old movie advertisements like that. The narration is priceless, and it's funny how sometimes they use the wrong stock effects for different monsters. As for the movie under discussion, as a young boy, of course I thought this movie was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. I wish I still had that mentality. This movie just does not entertain me like it used to at all. I will agree, the story is a little more complex than the previous film, Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, which is pretty much the selling point for most people I've come across. For me, I just don't enjoy the alien invasion plot as much as I do the other type films in the series. I know Ghidorah is an "alien," but I'm speaking of alien races, not necessarily monsters. The acting is top-notch. I really like Nick Adams, even though I've only seen him in two films. Akira Takarada is always a pleasure on screen, and Kumi Mizuno, well, that goes without saying. Actually, the actors and actresses are what keeps me even remotely interested in this film, because the human part of the film overshadows the monster scenes. That's the final point I'll make: Lack of monster screen time. The action is rather short-lived, and it left me with an empty feeling. I personally prefer Ghidorah's previous outing. This is by no means a bad movie, but it doesn't entertain me as much as some others. |

I don't know why people think this movie is so bad. They think it is the worst of the Showa Series. I actually think its one of the best. |

I don't think it's anywhere near to being the worst Godzilla movie; I think it's one of the best, and arguably most important. It started the alien invasion plot for several good Godzilla movies. The majority of comments I see on this movie are positive. For me, I just don't find a lot of interest in it. |

IOTAM is not a flawless film, but it does have strengths that many later Godzilla films lacked. Decent acting, decent effects, and a, while not amazing, but exceptional storyline, that provides twists, turns, and makes the humans actually seem relevant. |

I consider Invasion of the Astro Monster part of the high point of the Showa Godzilla movies. Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, and Astro Monster are arguably the best of the Godzilla movies. |

This was the next in the series that I'm showing my friend. His reaction was about the same as with the previous films (although he admited right before we watched this one that he was choking back tears when Mothra died in Mothra vs. Godzilla and even after her larva avenged her). But I have to say the experience was different for me this time. This one has always ranked low for me in the initial Honda,Tsuburaya, Ifukube run for me, but it seemed a lot more fun. Although my main complaint about the extremely short Kaiju fights still stands, I found what monster action there was enjoyable. My friend was constantly trying to figure out if the aliens were evil or friendly in the beginning. About halfway through the final Kaiju rampage, he looked to me and said "This movie has been pretty quiet, and now all hell has broken loose." lol I showed him the English dub of this one, mainly because I feel the opening them fits a lot better in the dub than the Military march that plays in the beginning of the Japanese version. |

Agreed. My two primary gripes about Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965) are the lack of kaiju screen time for much of the film and the assinine "jumping shie" scene involving Godzilla after the monster, along with Rodan, drive off King Ghidorah on Planet X. I know this scene, in which Godzilla jumps up and down, is popular among many Godzilla fans but I just think it looks silly and undermines what had been a successful build up in suspense as the Xians transported Godzilla and Rodan to their home planet to square off(again) with King Ghidorah. Major pluses for me in this movie: the performance of Nick Adams, the performance of Akira Kubo as the bumbling but goodhearted inventor who actually helps save the proverbial day for humanity at the film's conclusion with his deafening, handheld invention "the Lady Guard". I also enjoyed Yoshio Tsuchiya as "the Controller Of Planet X". The Xians are, for me the best rendered aliens in a Godzilla movie...with the ape like Black Hole aliens in the '74 and '75 G movies a close second. |
