In 1961 British Lions Films-Pax Films released The Day The Earth Caught Fire. The story: Simultaneous detonations of powerful nuclear bombs by both the United States and the Soviet Union result in gradual, and bizarre, weather changes all over the globe. Eventually the dreadful reason for these weather effects is revealed: the detonations have knocked the Earth off it's axis, and to make matters even worse, have caused the Earth to begin moving, in a collision course, with the sun. Across the planet the heat intensifies, resulting in massive blazes, withering heatwaves, and the accompanying widespread panic, chaos, and sense of humanity's impending doom. The world's leading scientists devise a plan: one final, enormous detonatiion, that may save humanity by re-setting the Earth's axis, or hasten the world's destruction. ------Observations: I have always been impressed by this film- the suspense and feeling of dread that it effectively evokes, the story told through the eyes of a reporter employed by the London Daily Express. The ending is, like the movie itself, thought-provoking. The DVD of this movie, distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment, is stellar. The film is presented in widescreen(2.35:1), includes an audio commentary with director Val Guest("The Quatermass Experiment"). a theatrical trailer, TV spot, still gallery, and director biography. This movie won for "Best Screenplay"(British Academy Award) in 1961. In my opinion a science fiction classic and one of the best "end-of-the-world" films ever made. For anyone who is a fan of science fiction movies I recommend this movie very highly. Post your opinions and critiques of this film, anything/anyone related to it, and the DVD, right here. All replies welcome. :)

Couldn't agree more with your thoughts on this film, packmule. This is a wonderful piece of sci-fi and is a much more serious film than one might expect for the year it was made. A wonderful cast that includes, Edward Judd, Leo McKern and Janet Munro as well as the writing and directing efforts of Val Guest who has long been a fave of mine from his work with Hammer Studios. JUst a very good effort and I agree, the disc from Anchor Bay is outstanding!

I was most impressed with the performance of Edward Judd in this film. His character was very interesting-a complex guy, witty, sometimes moody, always assertive, not liked by all of his colleagues, but certainly respected. He developed a good on-screen chemistry, IMO, with co-star Janet Munro.

Yes, Edward Judd was impressive in this film and I have always loved his performance in another favorite of mine, Island of Terror where he starred alongside, Peter Cushing. It seems Judd had a knack for bringing a multitude of emotions to the characters he portrayed and what I find neat is, he may not have fit what most people would consider a leading man type....he wasn't perfectly fit and he wasn't a 'pretty boy', but more of an everyday person that fans could relate to. He always seemed very believable in all I've seen him in and that really makes him a good actor in my opinion.

Her's a pic of Mr. Judd-I think it captures his screen presence pretty well.

Great photo of Mr Judd. I haven't seen a ton of films he's been in....The Day the Earth Caught Fire, The First Men In the Moon, Island of Terror, Vault of Horror and Vengeance of She. I have, X-The Unknown which he's supposed to be in, uncredited, but it must be a mighty small bit, as I haven't noticed him! Anyway, I enjoy his performances in all those films.

I think, X-The Unknown is a very good sci-fi effort from Hammer Studios and if you enjoy their first two Quatermass films, chances are, you'll enjoy, X-The Unknown. The story is very good and it's got a solid cast, I'd recommend it. :)

Have you ever seen, Island of Terror? That's easily one of my all-time favorite films, it's just a lot of fun, in spite of some beasties that people write off as being horrible....I love the film.

The First Men In the Moon is considered a weak film by some fans, but I found it to be another enjoyable sci-fi outing and can you ever go wrong with Ray Harryhausen in charge of effects?

Vault of Horror is the sequel to Amicus' 1972 film, Tales From the Crypt and while I think it's darn near impossible to top the 1972 film, Vault of Horror has some solid stories that make for fun viewing.

Vengeance of She may be one of the lesser efforts to watch, but still, not complete tripe. A sequel of sorts to Hammer's 1965 film, She, Vengeance of She is still worth a watch, in my opinion, just don't expect greatness!
