On March 12, 1972 Toho-Eizo Company released Chikyu Kogeki Meirei: Gojira Tai Gaigan, "Godzilla Versus Gigan". The U.S. version of this film, entitled Godzilla On Monster Island, was released in August of 1977. The story: A cartoonist, hired by the developers of an amusement park called Children's World Land, is anything but amused after discovering that his employers are actually alien cockroaches in human disguise, who are here on Earth because their own planet has become ravaged by pollution, and want to conquer Earth and possess the planet's abundance of natural resources. Opposing the aliens, in addition to Gengo the cartoonist :his girlfriend, conveniently well-versed in the martial arts, a portly hippie, and another woman who wants to rescue her brother(who is forced to aid the aliens in the upkeep and repair of their electronics). Fortunately, for humanity, Godzilla and Angilas also join in the fight against the aliens, squaring off against Gigan, a space cyborg kaiju, and old G adversary King Ghidorah. ------------Observations: Once more a fun, though somewhat uneven movie for me. The effects are, at times, spectacular, courtesy of SPFX director Teruyoshi Nakano, unquestionably one of the best at creating awesome pyrotechnic effects. In other instances the effects are erratic, and in one scene preposterous(referring to the "word ballooned" communication between Godzilla and Angilas). The film has been released on Region 1 DVD by Columbia/Tri-Star so fans can view this film in widescreen, a clean print, and with decent audio and subtitle options. Post your take and opinions on this film, anything related and the DVD if you like. All replies welcome. :) |

I love this film. I don't know why, it's just so special to me. Gigan is one of the most enjoyable opponents Godzilla has fought, with his fun roar, excited hopping and generally badass appearance. I love a lot of moments in this movie, like the scene with Angilas/Anguirus and Godzilla talking, or Gigan's "The Stage Is Yours"-ish pose when he steps aside for King Ghidorah. It's a movie I can watch time and time again. |

I enjoy the film, it's not a huge favorite of mine and it's certainly not disliked by me, so I suppose it falls somewhere in the middle of the pack, but that's not really a bad thing. I like the final battle scenes, but the beginning of the film moves a wee bit too slow for me....if I can get past the very beginning, then I'm good to go.

And that might be the best thing I can say about Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972). This movie is somewhat uneven for me, because it has a lot of things I like and some I do not. I did not like the effects used to render the aliens, who in this film are insect-like, resembling cockroaches. Nothing more than shadows on the walls are used to suggest what they look like, as opposed to actually showing what they look like. Like "KaijuFanatic" I also thought the movie started somewhat slowly, which for me is never too good. As to what I liked the kaiju battle scenes were great, with lots of explosions and other formidable pyrotechnic effects on display to showcase the talents of Teruyoshi Nakano and his effects crew. The initial kaiju battle at the oil refinery is still one of my favorite kaiju battle scenes from all Godzilla movies. I also admit I had a crush, for a long time, on Yuriko Hishimi, the karate kicking girlfriend of the comic artist in this movie-she also played "Anne" in the Ultraseven TV series. |

While a bit slow, it is entertaining to me. Gigan was a great new foe, to bad he hasnt appeared that much. King Ghidorah's suit is falling apart, the golden scales are a mess. Anguirus looks nice and is in good condition, the G-suit seems to be falling apart as well, but its still fine. I like this one for the blood. |

I also find it a bit of a struggle, at times, to hang with the first forty five minutes of this film, because of the lack of action. Agreed. I liked the fact that Godzilla spent much more time in physical battling with Gigan than he did with KG. Indeed-it also appeared to me that KG had hair on it's heads...or something to that effect. There didn't appear to be nearly as much wing movement from KG either, as opposed to his appearances in the Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster(1964) and Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965). Considering this was the fourth film in which this suit was used, I thought it held up well. It was used in: Destroy All Monsters(1968), Godzilla's Revenge(1969), Godzilla Vs Hedorah(1971) and Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972). A nice 'run" for this suit. thumbs up |

The use of stock footage in this film was mildly bothersome, especially when it was used during the key action scenes. I really wish they would have steered away from doing that. As far as Gigan himself, he's one of the monsters with alot of personality and I thought they really portrayed this well in his movements and behavior. I agree with all who said the movie starts out too slow, as I thought the "human" side of the story was particularly boring on this go around. |

And also, IMO, more than a little preposterous. Consider that the human characters fooled the aliens into shooting into an artistic mural, the weapon discharge ultimately contributing to the destruction of the alien's hideout and base of operations in the 50 meter tall tower. I'm supposed to believe the aliens looked at the mural and believed they were shooting their weapons at the actual humans. This contrivance, IMO, stretches my "suspension of belief" to the breaking point.

That's a good question. I know that many suits used in the "Ultraman" series were "mothballed" after use-they were just stored away and never used again. I'll try and research this a little and see what I can find out. :) |

In that case, wouldn't it be cool if they sold off one or two? :D |

![]() I think if I had my pick of kaiju costumes I would select Keronia(from episode 31 of the original "Ultraman" series). I once saw an internet review of the episode this monster appeared in describe the creature as "a walking cabbage". |

DVDs in Japan are way too expensive, too. Topic: I think I would enjoy wearing a Ragon or Gomora costume at a party.
