I have to agree that the final battle music is among the best music I've heard in Godzilla films.

I do feel sorry for Gigan though. It's as if nobody thought he could carry a film by himself. In early concepts involving Gigan, (Like "Return of King Ghidorah", an unproduced concept) he was never the single opponent. Even in his self-titled movie he came together with King Ghidorah.

That said, it was Ghidorah's worst battle performance. All he did during the fight was stand around and lazily fire a beam or two, except for when Anguirus attacked him. Gigan, however, proved able to handle both Godzilla and Anguirus to a degree. Granted, Godzilla at full strength easily outmatched him, but you have to give Gigan credit for the effort.

Dispite his power Ghidorah at this point seemed to have built up somewhat of a cowardly villain and would retreat when the battle turns even slighly unfavourable for him....kinda reminds me of Starsream from Transformers....Gigan seemed to also pick up the very same trait at the end of this film and more so when he runs off in the middle of the fight in Megalon.

Gigan always runs at the end of a battle.

Gigan fought twice in Zone Fighter with no intention of running. That was also the only time he got to fight completely alone. Granted, he was almost killed by Godzilla and WAS killed by Zone Fighter, but he never ran. King Ghidorah, on the other hand, is a full-blown coward who runs everytime he realizes he's not the best.

Ghidorah even ran away twice in the same film in Invasion Of The Astro Monsters......Granted Ghidorah was probably the second strongest Godzilla villain in the Showa era (I suspect Mechagodzilla was stronger) but not a particularly bold one....one think it does contrast is how brave Anguirus is....while not that strong a monster on the grand scale of things always fights some of the toughest monsters and usually sticks it out except in Mechagodzilla were he got pretty ruined very quickly.

Even though Angilas was rudely disposed of by MG the monster still "brought his lunch pail" to the fight, so to speak. It's why this monster has long been a favorite of mine: he's tough, win or lose, has a great roar and always come to a battle ready to work. thumbs up

Anguirus has a great roar....one of the all time best I must say, but while not as strong as Godzilla, Rodan or most of the other monsters he always gives the fight his all which is why he one of my favourites aswell...there aren't many monsters as ballsy as Anguirus is.

And don't forget, Angilas was the first monster to make a move against Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters. He's a tenacious one.

You just can't help but like Anguirus because he is so bold which is why I'm glad he didn't get killed off in Final Wars like was originally set in the script but couldn't because they didn't have their whole budget yet....if the had killed of Anguirus in Final Wars believe me I would hate that film even more then I already do....if that's possible.

very funny

One of the few things that I really liked about GFW was the "rolling attack" that Angilas used when fighting both the aerial warship and then Godzilla. It makes sense, given this monster's physical features, because he has an obviously lower center of gravity and has those spikes on his back. Angilas has always reminded me of an army tank.

It's a shame that the Toho effects crews couldn't have pulled off this rolling assault of Angilas in the monster's Showa movie appearances...but I'm sure it would have been impossible at that time, given the technology available.

A monster in Zone Fighter rolled itself up in a similar fashion.. except it did look ridiculous. They showed him hunch together and then cut to a clip showing a big ball resembling him. If I had a clip, I'd show you.

Admittedly it looked pretty ridiculous when Anguirus did it in Final Wars aswell....it seems that either way it's not going to be the most convincing effect in the world

ok ok, i'll admit its not as bad as the megalon film
but its cheesy and and another film that just kinda bored me

BUT, one thing makes me hate the film even more, THEY TALK! monsters don't make human noises, in my opinion, they should communicate in a different way, like grunts or high or low pitched roars.

Godzilla Vs Gigan - Revisited

I first saw this movie on TBS Superstation back in 1987 in the attic apartment of a friend and co-worker on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I wanted my friend "Robert" to tape the movie but his VCR crapped out. Too bad too because it would be about eight more years before I would watch this film again, in the summer of 1995.

Having watched Godzilla Vs Gigan last night(Sunday) took me back to the year 1995 when I first saw this movie uncut, in widescreen and with English subtitles, on VHS, the tape one of many I had ordered from a now defunct bootlegger catalog video company located in New York state.

Godzilla Vs Gigan is one of the few G movies I've watched in which my overall opinion of it hasn't changed, for better or worse, with repeated viewings. I've always liked many things about this movie...and always disliked many things as well.

The film's story: Mild mannered and milquetoast magazine artist/cartoonist Genko Kotaka(Hiroshi Ishikawa) begins to believe there's something very wrong with the employees of "World Children's Land", a Japan branch of an international theme park corporation whose main office is located in Switzerland. His suspicions are justified: the employees, including the leader of the park, Kubota(Toshiaki Nishizawa), and the youthful Fumio Sudo(Zan Fujita) are all roach-like insectoid aliens from the Space Hunter M galaxy with designs on sanitizing, then colonizing the Earth. The aliens are able to occupy human bodies and hence draw little attention among themselves while they effect their devious plans. A mysterious audio reel tape, earlier confiscated by a young lady named Machiko Shima, is played, by accident, by Kotaka and Machiko(Tomoko Umeda), whose brother is being held captive by the aliens.

The tape is little more than gibberish to Genko Kotaka and Machiro Ishima, but not to Godzilla and Anguirus, the two monsters able to detect and understand the tape's message. Consequently, Godzilla dispatches Anguirus to make landfall in Japan and deal with the situation. The JSDF drive Anguirus off while a short time later the space monsters King Ghidorah and Gigan, controlled by the insectoid aliens, arrive on Earth and begin a rampage of destruction, the monster's actions the first phase in the alien's plans to colonize the Earth. Godzilla and Anguirus arrive, eventually, and square off against the alien controlled monsters. The human cast members, Genko Kotaka, his girlfriend Tomoko Tomoe(Yuriko Hishimi), Machiko Shima, her brother Takashi Shima(Kunio Murai) and her friend Shosaku Takasugi(Minoru Takashima), all work together as well to defeat the aliens...(no other spoilers)

Observations, some good and some not so good:

Thumbs up:

1. the pyrotechnic effects in this film. Teruyoshi Nakano, the special effects director for this movie really delivers with the explosions, both those resulting from the monster's rampage and also those resulting from the monster battles

2. King Ghidorah's gravity beams, which look as devastating as ever

3. the overall rendering of the cyborg monster Gigan. The monster lacks a beam weapon but is very hostile and has a scary looking buzz saw built into its chest and abdomen. It's roar is effective as well and has a mechanical quality to it

4. the battle between Godzilla and Gigan, which looks to be entirely comprised of high speed filming, which slows the monster's actions and movements down, IMO adding some realism to the sequence

5. Yuriko Hishimi, who plays Kotaka's girlfriend "Tomoko Tomoe". She's gorgeous and, skilled in karate, gets to kick some alien ass as well

6. the overall "oil refinery" battle sequence: Godzilla and Anguirus make landfall for the first time to engage KG and Gigan. This scene is one of my favorite Showa Godzilla film kaiju battle sequences.

Thumbs down:

1. the many insertions of stock footage. Most are annoying but there's one sequence where a scene(or two) from 1964's Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster is used, which looks horrendous

2. the character played by Minoru Takashima, "Shosaku Takasugi": a portly hippie, leering and sporting a half assed scruff of chin hair while constantly nibbling on a stick of corn on the cob, there were times in this movie when I would have liked sticking that corn on the cob in various orifices of this character

3. the colossal ineptitude of the aliens in this movie: despite their advanced technology they were done in by the simple, yet effective, duplicity of the human cast members, including the "mural", in which alien henchmen, believing the mural to be the actual humans, fire away with their weapons, which quickly sets off a chain reaction of explosions that destroy the theme park tower base used by the aliens

4. Godzilla's sudden resurrection after being thrown into the 50 meter tall theme tower by KG. Godzilla, weakened by the laser beam assault from the aliens(in the tower), is suddenly and inexplicably rejuvenated after crashing into the tower. My reaction to this scene remains the same now as it was back in 1987: "What the hell?"

5. some of the human like mannerisms of the monsters, such as Godzilla appearing to wipe his mouth twice, waving at Anguirus to swim off to Japan during an early sequence in the movie, and then slapping himself in the side of the head when seeing the alien's tower, which has been designed to look like Godzilla

Overall: I like this movie just fine but it's no doubt hit or miss with many G fans because of the often wildly uneven effects.

This film reached American theaters in 1977, distributed by Cinemashares, and re-titled "Godzilla On Monster Island".

In 2004 Sony Home Entertainment released this movie to quality Region 1 DVD, the movie presented in its original 2:35.1 widescreen aspect ratio and with optional Japanese language(w/English subtitles) and English language(the international English language track) selection.

Well...

Where do I begin.

Stock footage I guess.
I have no issues when brief stock footage. Flashes of Kaiju from Monster Island to show that most of the monsters are contained or settled in on whatever island it is they are on.

The only movie I think that uses stock footage in a good way is "Godzilla's Revenge" But I have my own reasons for thinking this.

There is a bit too much for this film. The Ghidorah & Anguirus battle is one I find exceptionally annoying (just because it was such a prevelant scene in DAM).

I can take or leave Godzilla and Anguirus chatting scene. I don't think they actually need to voice it (american Version) or word balloon it (japanese Version). I think the same effect could have been done using body language and thier various modes of roar/cries etc.

The Aliens were certainly in line with the other incompetent (standard) aliens of most of the SHOWAera movies. I think Godzilla tower was in particular a "BAD" concept. At least the head could have swung so as to shoot in any direction... after all it is a gun turrent of some sort. I'd blame their ineptness on them being Cockroaches (and at least they have that), but they certainly fall in suit with the inane actions of the aliens that came before them. I do wish they had made some kind of insect suits (instead of real cockroach images) of them.

Now to the aspect of the film that ruins it for me...
the humans

The Artist Gengo Kotaka(Hiroshi Ishikawa) - You want a great example of an incredibly poorly concieved character. Here he is. He is an idiot. His character is lamely executed (I wish) throughout the length of this film. I have never rooted for a character to die more than him (with the possible exception of Mr. Tako of Pacific Pharmaceuticals and a television "station?" show - Ichiro Arishima from KKvG). This character completely bungles his way through the film. It would be okay if he was halfway funny. Ugh... I can't even go on about him...

Next is Tomoko Tomoe-artists girlfriend (Yuriko Hishimi) - She is gorgeous... and obviously has something wrong with her. Cause her boyfriend is super-enept-artist-boy Gengo. Why she put up with someone like Gengo should have been the real human backstory of GvG. Frankly though they could have made her the main character of the film and wrote Gengo totally out and the film would have been so much better. She holds her own as a character for being the only human in this film with any shred of confidence. She loses points for being with Gengo (Who I am sure she dumped after the end of the film... hopefuly she kung fu'd him up when she did).

Kubota, Head of World Children's Land (Toshiaki Nishizawa) - I liked the concept of this character. It kind of gave a feel that the "Cockroaches" were not aware that a person of Kubota's age would not be heading an organization the size of "World's Children Land". This is an easy clue for the humans to pick up on. I like the arrogance of his character. I just wish he had been a bit more vicious and insect-like and simply offed the pesky humans.

Fumio Sudo, Chairman (Zan Fujita) - Another lame character... This guy had an air of both stupidity and some weird sense of being a freaky pervert. I mean... come on... that cigarette scene with Gengo is... creepy. I am surprised Kubota didn't flat out execute and eat him. Guess they needed someone nearly as stupid as Gengo to offset him.

Takashi Shima computer/electronics expert (Kunio Murai) - He could have easily have become the hero of this film WAY over Gengo (and should have). He seems a likable enough of a guy. smart. Not very brave. Would have been nice to see him try to make a bolder move. He had that shuffling "aww shucks! I'll do what ya say" kinda sense about him.

Machiko Shima -Sister of Takashi (Tomoko Umeda) - boy is she a fretty little thing. Also a very pretty girl... ummm what is she doing hanging out with that hippy? Is it good drugs or something? There has to be a logical answer. Was he her hair stylist? She just seemed to kinda wander around in the film. Just a hapless sister all worried about her abuducted brother Takashi.

Shosaku Takasugi- Hippy (Minoru Takashima) - what the hell? The hippy human food processor! You know this guy lives in him Mom's basement. I am surprised they didn't bring in another hippy and do a Japanese play on "Cheech and Chong" Oh Lord...

Okay.... that is the main players of this film... (G7: shakes head and puts face in hands)

You do realize... if you transformed Gengo into a Great Dane (since his character was such a dog I would pick him) and combined him with everyone else... you would have had the greatest crime-solving-monster-busting team in history...
MYSTERY INC.
Gengo = Scooby
Tomoko = Daphne
Shosaku = Shaggy
Machiko = Velma
Takashi = Fred

But wait... there is more.
Like this one...
Self Defense Force Commander (Gen Shimizu) - This man... actually let Mystery Inc lead a combat squad against a group of soon to be planet conquering aliens... WHA*TH*HELL - it is little wonder Giant Monsters run all over the Nation of Japan with decision makers like that. of course... lucky for him that the Cockroach/Aliens mistook a pen and ink drawing for REAL humans... and shot at them, causing a massive explsion. (just think about it for a second... take it in... *crickets chirp merrily*)

Oh then there is the Temple thing when Scooby... I mean Gengo and Shaggy... oops damn... I mean Shosaku go and investigate the leaders of Children's Land in thier home town.
They discover two people.
one is the town Priest (Kurayoshi Nakamura) and the other is some elderly Female Assistant at the Temple (Kuniko Ashihara), who I thought at first was going to end up being Kubota's Mom.

Well we find out that Kubota died tragically in an accident in the mountains... with his teacher... Fumio Sudo (none other than the chairman of Children's Land). With all of this.. comes the best line of the movie...
The Priest is told that Kubota now runs Children's land and is like some advanced mathematician. The Priest laughs and basically tells them that the "HUMAN" Kubota was dumber than a box of Rocks... (That just cracks me up so badly. here we are at the anniversery of this kid's death and a priest says something like that. Come on... it is funny!). Frankly they should have let the real Kubota join the cast. He would have fit right in.

Okay... enough about the pathetic humans (or cast so to speak).

THE KAIJU

Yes. Gigan is a kick butt looking Kaiju. Wicked wicked looking. He actually looks evil.
Ghidorah is always a welcome foe. Though his suit is pretty beat up, I don't think it takes away from him. After all... he is Ghidorah!

This movie (as much as I dispise the human & Alien stuff in it) has one Rocking kickbutt scene of Gigan and Ghidorah layin down the "City Stomp" law.
This just rocks. I really enjoyed watching these two trash the city.

Godzilla is just simply Godzilla. He takes an asswhippin though and like was mentioned in someone else's post, he does sudden spring back all rejuvenated (maybe there was something radioactive he absorbed from the Godzilla tower - after all... he was right next to it when he suddenly got all juiced up!) The fights are good... but there is a lot of off timed movements/things going on. Which kinda detracts a bit from the fights. Over all, it is a pretty brutal fight.

Anguirus the most under-rated Kaiju is shoved to the background to be kicking fodder for Gigan and Ghidorah.
But before all of this he is initially sent by Godzilla to check out that bizarro sound coming from Japan....
Okay... I think everyone gets the wrong impression here when Anguirus comes on shore... The JDF do not win (Though they may think they did). Anguirus doesn't do anything other than stand on the shoreline (after all... he was here seeking the source of that Kaiju calling reel to reel). He gets on shore... the JDF start firing on him... and he simply goes "BAH!" and turns around and goes back to Monster Island to discuss it with Godzilla. Course I personally think it would have been neat to just have Anguirus hang out in Tokyo bay and wait for Godzilla. Anguirus certainly was on the move that day. Swam to Japan... swam back to Monster Island... swam back to Japan... and then helped fight the Kaiju Space threats. He took it all in stride... took his lumps and helped defeat the bug eyed monsters from space.
GREAT MOMMENT FOR ANGUIRUS... Reverse catapult into the bad Kaiju. COOL!

Overall... the human elements ruin this movie. For me they virtually utterly ruin it. If they had all died, I wouldn't have cared and it would have made it a better movie.
Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla uses basically the same size cast and pull it off virtually flawlessly (including Aliens hiding in human form). It is almost the same forumla... even Anguirus takes yet another butt whipping (last we saw of him he fell into a giant fissure on Monster Island in the beginning Godzilla vs Megalon).

To me. Godzilla vs Gigan is the second worst movie of the Godzilla series (first being KKvG). Saving grace. Kaiju battles and the intro of Gigan. imop

Thankfully it got better with the trippy next movie Godzilla vs Hedorah.

Well if Megalon had been in it... as was from what I can ascertain the original concept for the movie that would become Godzilla vs Gigan. Then all they would have had to do was add the "Concept only" chara of Majin Tuol to the fold and the movie would have been...

Godzilla vs. the Space Monsters: Earth Defense Directive

Which, IF the story is correct on the Toho Kingdom site. Would have been a far better movie. Though they still could have had the character of Tomoko Tomoe-Gengo's girlfriend (Yuriko Hishimi) in it. Minus the horrid chara of Gengo and the other lame cast members.

Though I still think the Godzilla Tower was a B.S. idea

Having not long ranked the Showa films and realised with a bit of surprise I'd ranked Godzilla Vs Gigan seventh, I decided to watch this classic [honest] again. I still found it immensely entertaining and so it's staying seventh. In all honestly, it's probably one of the Showa films I've watched most, and I think it's a fine Godzilla film which was heavily compromised by it's tiny budget but does the best it can with that and has quite a few odd,quirky touches which make it interesting.

The basic story isn't really up to much I suppose [once again aliens out to conquer earth using monsters, except this time as they are low budget aliens they operate from a half built place on earth called Children's Land] but I rather like the slow first half, it has a fair element of mystery and intrigue about it and I've never found it boring. The humans are admittedly not very interesting though I quite like the main hero being a wimp! The sequence where they show the alien's planet from real shots of Tokyo is kind of interesting if silly, much like many other elements in the movie, but I think the reveal of the cockroach shadows works really well. Of couse when the monsters go into action it really kicks into high gear. The oil refinery battle is a spectacular sequence and Teryoshi Nakano's best work in my opinion. The final battle might be the longest Kaiju battle and I love it, Godzilla is like Rocky, he just keeps getting knocked down and comes straight back up again. I like the gore too, it's odd how this is a prevailing feature in the mostly more juvenile 70s films.

Ah the stock footage......well, to be honest, the first couple of times I saw this when I was much younger, I didn't notice it all, probably because I han't seen all the films it cribbed footage from. The Gidorah/Gigan destuction scene just seemed like a real kick-ass destruction sequence that went on for ages. Of course now it seems like a mess, going from night to day, from the tatty, slow moving Ghidorah to the fast, deadly one of Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster and Monster Zero. Some of the footage is very well cut in though, such as the War Of The Gargantuas stuff during Angilas' battle with the army.

Gigan is a typically wacky 70s Kaiju, I've never quite worked out if he's a Kaiju or a Mecha but I love the design and execution, Ghidorah looks half asleep or even half dead except for the stock footage. Angilas is a great tough companion for Godzilla though I've actually never been a fan of him in terms of looks, still I was extremely disapppointed by the short shrift he got in GMK. The monsters talking used to be my favourite funny bit in a Godzilla film and it still makes me chuckle, I really don't mind it, though I wish the DVD had the speech bubbles that are supposed to be in the Japanese version. I'm glad it's only in one film though! As for the aliens they are pathetic throughout and the bit where they shoot at a picture thinking it's real people is very lame!

The score for this film is fantastic, a great selection of Akira Ifikube tracks, some of them very well edited together to make longer pieces, though it's sometimes overused, such as the fairly jaunty [for Ifikube] march from Frankenstein Conques The World played over our human heroes travelling around. The non Kaiju/Sci Fi music that plays over the main titles and during the final battle is tremendoudly rousing. Much like the film, in a way. It's a seriously flawed and awkward movie but a tremendously likeable and quite creative one in my opinion and easily my favourite Godzilla film from the 70s.
